To nobody's surprise (one hopes), Minnesota backstop Joe Mauer is your 2009 AL MVP. Yankee teammates Mark Teixeira and Derek Jeter split the Bronx vote to finish second and third, respectively. Tiger Miguel Cabrera, who finished fourth, received one first-place vote, with all the others going to Joltin' Joe of the Twin Cities.

As this site's resident Yankee fan, I'd have been happy to see either Tex or Jeter win -- but I think in the big picture, the voters got this one right. Well, except for the one guy who put Miggy Cabrera first. Revoke his voting privlege!

I thought it would be a pretty decisive win for Mauer, but still - I thought it would be closer than this:

That was a Seattle voter who went with Cabrera, by the way.

I haven't seen but am guessing that the same writer who voted for Verlander for the CY also voted for Cabrera.

Oops, I missed this.

FWIW, Fangraph's value estimator has 'em in this order:  Greinke, Zobrist, Mauer, and Verlander.  I would have voted Mauer (and I don't think that it is close).

Five pitchers got votes, and none to Halladay? Am I reading that right? Only Lind and Hill got Jay votes ... I'm not a proponent of pitcher-as-MVP (with rare exceptions) but if you're voting for pitchers on your MVP ballot, not sure all these guys rank above the Doctor ...

It's always refreshing when the voters somehow manage to restrain themselves from simply voting for the RBI leader. Granted, Teixeira's league leading figure (122) was the lowest number to lead the AL in a non-strike year since Ruben Sierra led the league with 119 in 1989.

Sierra also finished second in the MVP voting.

I am pleasantly surprised at how Mauer won in such a landslide. I am even more surprised that Teixeira finished ahead of Jeter. There's your RBI-love Magpie, albeit muted.

Well, except for the one guy who put Miggy Cabrera first.

No doubt the same guy who voted Verlander for Cy Young.

I guess I should've hit refresh.

No doubt the same guy who voted Verlander for Cy Young.

Go to any of the forums. Our conclusions were -- erroneously -- drawn by many.

You could also make a case for some Jason Bartlett love (maybe not as a top five MVP candidate, but somewhere on the board). How often do you find a good-field SS who hits 320/389/490 with 30 SB? Of course, he only played in 137 games, so I'm guessing he was injured for a few weeks at some point. But those are some pretty fancy numbers.
