The National Post says right-hander Scott Richmond has a shoulder impingement.  The team says the 30 year-old North Vancouver native will undergo rehab in an effort to return to the mound.

Scott Richmond and catcher Rod Barajas head for the dugout prior to Richmond's start against Minnesota at the Rogers Centre September 7th.

The American League Rookie of the Month last April after a 3-0 start struggled to an 8-11 record with a 5.52 ERA in his first full season in the bigs.  In 24 starts and three relief appearances, the 6-foot-5 hurler struck out 117 batters and walked 59 for a WHIP of 1.49 in 138 2/3 innings.  As noted in the linked story above, the former Edmonton Cracker-Cat suffered a shoulder injury during the season and pitched for the Gulf Coast League Jays and the Las Vegas 51's in a pair of rehab starts before returning.  Shi Davidi from the Canadian Press twitters Richmond pitched in pain for the entire second half as he was rocked for an 8.44 ERA in his final eleven starts.

Here's hoping Richmond makes a speedy recovery and returns to the mound for Toronto in 2010.

Remember all those comments worrying about what the jays will do with all that pitching - Well, see - things are going to work out just fine

From the twittersphere

"TheGarfoose    Don't worry Jays fans, Richmond and I are going to practice throwing lefty this spring- righty's are sooo 2009."

I stand by my comments. Hayhurst was on the cusp of making the team anyway and Richmond didn't have a ton of security himself.

There were 8-10 candidates for the rotation without getting to guys you'd have to push like Ray or Mills.

And more depth than that in the pen.

It's going to take about 15 guys going down before we get to the point of being glad we have Eveland so we don't have to rush Mills or something similar.

The team statement says Richmond "will be behind the others pitchers to start spring training".

While poor defenders can make a pitching staff look bad, bad pitching is not going to impact the rest of the team except in the win/loss column.
The Jays are not competing this year and good performances from the 4th and 5th starters won't  make then competitive any faster.
It would be fantastic if the Jays lost all of those 64 starts, except I'm not sure they'd sign their picks.

It would be a success if Marcum can stay healthy and nab at least 10 wins. (His best is 12)
Romero is looking to improve over his 13-9 rookie season and that would be fantastic.
Morrow never won more than 3 games in a year, so winning 10 and keeping his ERA below 5.00 would be good.

I'd like to see Purcey in there. Should be an interesting camp. The actual season, not so much.

I can't reconcile myself to the idea of keeping good pitching in AAA just to take over when injury strikes. You get hurt in the minors too. Maybe more.
Wasted pitching it is.

Shaun Marcum will start - he's ready, he's healthy, he's back.   How many innings will he pitch is unknown.   We'd like him to make 20 starts if possible (first year of arbitration).   He needs to be at 33 starts by his first free agent year.   Ricky Romero will start.  Pitched like an Ace the first half, like a 4th or 5th starter for the remainder of the season.   He should last longer this year, moving into the 200+ IP range.   Brandon Morrow will start - needs to work on a quality 3rd and 4th pitch - he needs to be here.  He's inning limited for two or more years.   David Purcey should start - because he can.  He's moved into the 200+ inngs range.   We need at least 2 or 3 starters not on innings limits.   The 5th starter must not be Brian Tallet, he's much more needed in relief.

Morrow never won more than 3 games in a year, so winning 10 and keeping his ERA below 5.00 would be good.

I would say an ERA over 4.50 would be a dissapointment. Preferrably I would like to see it under 4, if he is going to be a "front of the rotation" guy like he is pegged to be. But if he was in the low 4's and shows some improvement this year I could live with it.

NY Post's Joel Sherman has a piece on the winners and losers of the off-season and the Jays, and Halladay, make the list:

I'd rather have Eveland over Hayhurst or Richmond even if they were healthy, so I'm not quite sure why adding him would be an issue?
TheBunk - Sunday, February 14 2010 @ 08:06 PM EST (#211810) #
Seems like it would be a useless addition, i'd take Dopirak's AA/AAA numbers over this guy's cuban league stats.
Richard S.S. - Monday, February 15 2010 @ 04:32 AM EST (#211814) #

Dana Eveland would be a decent No.5 starter.   Drafted at 18 in 2002, he wasn't signed until 2003.   He pitched 26.0 in Rookie-ball that year (good numbers).   http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=evelan001dan   He pitched 141.0 in mid-A - AA in 2004 (good numbers).   Isn't this too many innings?   In 2005, he pitched 109.0 in AA (good numbers) before being called up after the All-Star-Break to pitch http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/e/evelada01.shtml 31.2 in relief (not-so-good).   Was Milwaukee that desperate for pitching?   And I could go on and on about each year.

Dana Eveland is another in a long line of pitchers who get jerked back and forth starting - relieving (with no plan in mind).   Very few make the jump from AA or lower (under 200 total innings) to successfully pitch in the Majors.   Very little attention is paid to inning limitations.   Once the mistake is made, more are made in trying to justify the initial decision.   Given the chance to pitch healthy, with our Pitching Coaches, he should do well.

I'd be willing to bet that the Jays are looking at JJ Ruiz as a left fielder, and that they'll give him the opportunity to make the team out of spring training. If that's the case, I wouldn't be at all surprised  if he ends up signing with the Jays.
christaylor - Monday, February 15 2010 @ 02:08 PM EST (#211817) #
I don't really see how Eveland's career makes any strong case about pitchers pitching too many innings or that "Very little attention is paid to inning limitations". I think the last statement is easily shown to be false with young (which Eveland still is) pitchers today.

Eveland's career seems like he was good in the minors, been not very good and the majors has had some arm trouble (most pitchers do). He's a lefty, he'll have a job for a long time, even if it is at the minor league level.

From the MLBtraderumors.com list these Jays are out of options:

Brian Tallet, Shawn Camp, Dustin McGowan, Merkin Valdez, Sean Henn

Thomas - Monday, February 15 2010 @ 07:19 PM EST (#211820) #
The first two are near-locks for the bullpen. I'd have no issue if the Jays send Henn to Las Vegas for depth and risk losing him. I expect McGowan will be placed on the major league DL.

Valdez is the most intriguing name, but he's in tough as, barring a trade, Downs, Frasor, Tallet, Carlson, Camp and Gregg are all but assured places in the pen, and I'd guess that Accardo should have the inside track on the seventh spot.
Jim - Monday, February 15 2010 @ 07:58 PM EST (#211821) #
I don't see how Camp is locked into a slot.  He's a 34 year old right handed reliever who has never had any real success in high leverage situations in the major leagues.  If he didn't make it through waivers it's not the end of the world.  I'm sure he's been outrighted before so he could declare free agency if they tried to take him off the 40 man.  He only had a 2 K/BB ratio and only struck out 6.6 per 9.  His ERA was the lowest it's been because for the first time he somehow limited the number of hits he gave up.  I  would wager a large stack of money that those were the 80 best innings of his career.
Gerry - Monday, February 15 2010 @ 08:08 PM EST (#211822) #

We can all rest easy.  Endy Chavez is off the market.  According to MLB Trade Rumors he has signed with the Rangers.

Gerry - Monday, February 15 2010 @ 08:11 PM EST (#211823) #

I though Camp pitched better than his numbers showed last year.  I remember a couple of times Cito had him out there in long relief and in the third inning Camp was hit around.

Having said that it might have been a career year but I thought his slider last year was better than it had been in previous seasons.  But relievers do tend to have one good year one bad year.

If he has that slider agin in spring training I would keep him.

Matthew E - Monday, February 15 2010 @ 09:18 PM EST (#211824) #
Like I'm going to spend any time worrying about Shawn Camp.
Mick Doherty - Monday, February 15 2010 @ 10:17 PM EST (#211825) #
I thought that sounded kind of insane, so looked it up -- and to be precise, Chavez has signed with the Rangers organization. Minor League deal, not even sure if there's a spring training invite. He's bound for Oklahoma City, methinks.
Alex Obal - Tuesday, February 16 2010 @ 05:14 AM EST (#211826) #
It's a good signing. I'm buying Julio Borbon, but if he's hitting .170 with a 40% K rate on May 1, Texas doesn't have a true CF lying around to plug in while they rebuild Borbon in AAA. Chavez, knees and all, probably still fields the position well enough to be a decent insurance policy.

(Go Rangers!! Bandwagon team of choice 2010!! Yeah!!!)

(Go Rangers!! Bandwagon team of choice 2010!! Yeah!!!)

I think round these parts, the bandwagon for the Phillies will be full, with the overflow going to the Mariners bandwagon.
Thomas - Tuesday, February 16 2010 @ 08:05 AM EST (#211828) #
I'm a bandwagon veteran of the Phillies, having previously joined their bandwagon in 2008 and 2009 when I cheered on lovable Matt Stairs and his motley crew of teammates to two World Series appearances.
92-93 - Tuesday, February 16 2010 @ 01:34 PM EST (#211842) #
I would think Borbon fields CF well enough himself to be his own insurance policy. He's never been a hacker so the high strikeout rate is unlikely. I would guess he sits quite a bit vs. tougher LHPs, and expect a season similar to Carlos Gomez's valuable 2008 from Borbon. It sure would be nice to see them lead him off because I used the 151st pick on him in my new dynasty league.

I hate Tug McGraw.

and country music.

Mick Doherty - Tuesday, February 16 2010 @ 05:29 PM EST (#211854) #

ayj -- um, why? Is that just a random rant, or did I miss something somewhere?

And don't confuse Tug with Tim ... I don't know if daddy can sing, but am pretty sure junior can't trhow a screwball. Or did you genuinely hate the '73 Mets for taking their division with, what 82 wins?

ayjackson - Tuesday, February 16 2010 @ 08:39 PM EST (#211863) #

I associate Tug with the Phillies - I was 3 in '73.  As an Expo fan, McGraw was the lightning rod for my Phillies hatrid.  And while I've mellowed over the years and feel no ill will to the departed, I can't seem to cheer for the Phillies.

As for Tim, he's at the nexus of my Phillies and country music resentment.

We can all rest easy.  Endy Chavez is off the market.  According to MLB Trade Rumors he has signed with the Rangers.

I am surprised that Rocco Baldelli is still unsigned, which suggests he is injury-prone? Is signing him to a minor league contract is a worthwhile gamble?
