Saturday was ike Friday, three affiliates won, Las Vegas being the only loser, and Adam Calderone was the hitting hero again.  Calderone drove in the first three Fisher Cat runs in support of Kyle Drabek.  Drabek was matched up against Casey Kelly, one of Boston's top prospects.  Drabek pitched seven shutout innings for the win.

Henderson Alvarez had to face Jimmy Rollins as well as the rest of the Clearwater side and he pitched six shutout innings and kept Rollins off the bases.  Jon Tolisano had three hits including a home run.  Dunedin and Clearwater also finished a game suspended earlier in the season and Dunedin won that one too.  Adeiny Hechavarria hadone hit in each game and so far is hitting the ball on the ground most of the time.

Lansing were down 3-0 in the eighth but came back to win.  Brad Mills had a rough start and Las Vegas were blown out.

Iowa 15   Las Vegas 1

Brad Mills loaded the bases with no-one out in the first inning, then he proceeded to strikeout the side, including Wilson Betemit and Scott Thorman.  Mills wasn't as lucky in the second inning, three doubles, a single and a walk led to four runs.  And in the third Mills added two more runs to his tale of woe.  That was it for Mills, three innings, six runs, nine hits.  Unfortunately most of the rst of the pitchers weren't any better.  Steven Register: 2 innings, 3 runs.  Merkin Valdez: 2 innings, three runs, 17.55 ERA.  Jesse Carlson: 1 inning, 3 runs, 6.75 ERA.  David Purcey did pitch one shutout inning.

The Las Vegas hitters had only five hits.

Portland 0  New Hampshire 5

All Kyle Drabek had to do was keep the game close and Adam Calderone would look after the rest.  Drabek was matched up against Casey Kelly, one of Boston's top prospects, a 20 year old who was drafted as a two way player but who is now focused on pitching.  The game was uneventful, without a runner getting to second, until the bottom of the third.  Kelly walked the first two hitters and after a sacrifice, that guy, Calderone, singled in a run.

Through five innings Drabek had only allowed one hit.  In the bottom of the fifth Kelly was pulled with two outs, presumably due to his pitch count.  Calderone greeted the reliever with a home run to make it a 2-0 game.  Drabek gave up five singles between the sixth and seventh innings but two double plays helped him keep Portland off the scoreboard.

In the bottom of the seventh Calderone singled in run number three and, after an Eric Thames single, Brad Emaus doubled in two more runs.  Trystan Magnuson pitched the final two innings.

New Hampshire had nine hits, Calderone had three of them, scored two runs and drove in three, Shawn Bowman had two hits.

Calderone is now hitting .321 with an OPS of 930.  Over his last ten games Calderone has an OPS of 1217.  Over his last three games he is 8-12 with 8 rbi's.

Trystan Magnuson has his ERA down to 1.21, 0.54 over his last ten games.  On the season Magnuson has allowed 19 baserunners over 22.1 innings pitched.

Dunedin 9  Clearwater 8

This was the continuation of a game that had been suspended with Dunedin leading 5-2.  Kenny Rodriguez made his first appearance of the season and was rusty, he gave up five runs in 2.2 innings.  Dunedin managed to stay in front by scoring two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.  In the fifth Jon Talley and Al Quintana drove in runs.  In the sixth Sean Shoffit hit a home run.  Dunedin added an insurance run in the eighth and that was needed when Matt Daly gave up a run in the ninth.

Mike McDade had two hits.  Hechavarria was 1-3.  Hech flew out, grounded out, and singled on a ground ball to left.

Dunedin 5  Clearwater 0 - 7 innings

Henderson Alvarez had to face Jimmy Rollins as well as the usual lineup tonight and he was more than up to the job.  Alvarez allowed four singles over six innings, none to Rollins, with no walks.  Two of the runners were thrown out trying to steal by Jon Talley, and one was out trying to stretch a single into a double.  Alvarez had four strikeouts.

Dunedin scored their first run in the fifth on a John Tolisano home run.  Tyler Pastornicky hit his second home run of the season in the sixth.  Wellinton Ramirez had a bases-loaded, bases-clearing, double to make it 5-0.

Alan Farina pitched a clean seventh.  Tolisano had three hits, Ramirez had two.  Encarnacion was 0-3 with a walk.  Hechavarria was 1-4.  He grounded out three times and singled on a ground ball.  So far Hech is a ground ball machine.

Lansing 4 Bowling Green 3

Lansing got off to a rough start.  Ryan Goins made an error on the first batter and then Ryan Shopshire hit a batter.  Both those runners came in to score and Lansing were down 2-0.  Bowling Green added another run in the sixth to make it 3-0.  Lansing had only four hits through seven innings.

But, in the top of the eighth the Lugnuts loaded the bases, Kenny Wilson and Ryan Goins singled and Ryan Schimpf walked.  Mark Sobolewski cleared the bases with a double.  Two ground outs brought in the fourth run.

Shopshire pitched six innings, Matt Wright pitched the seventh and eighth, Steve Turnbull nailed down the save in the ninth.

The Luggies had 7 hits.  Wilson and Goins had two each.

I had the opportunity of seeing both of the Dunedin games in Dunedin last night. A-Hech played well in both games.  He did have one throwing error, but he seems to be a very, very impressive player with extrodinary physical talent.  His one error should not detract from the outstanding field presence that he displayed all night long.  I just hope that he isn't rushed up the ladder to the show.  I think he needs to develop without being hurried.  More importanly however, I was able to observe him up close, sitting within feet of the dugout.  For a 21 year old, he is mature beyond his years and looks and acts like a real pro in his interactions with other players and coaches.  Hats off to the folks in Dunedin working on his development.

By the way, Tyler P., Ramirez, & Tollisano were impressive to with their bats. And in the second game Alverez was really sharp in his 6 innings of shut out work.

Correction:  The games were in Clearwater last night.   I need to proofread before I hit submit.

Henderson Alvarez has given up one home run in 30 full-season starts. That's wild.

This could be one of the most interesting campaigns for mid-season promotions in a long time. You've got Wallace, Drabek and Magnuson looking like they're awfully close to major league ready. Emaus, Jeroloman, Mastroainni and the admittedly fringe-y Calderone look ready for AAA. In the lower levels, it's time to move Sobolewski up. He'll be 24 this year. And it looks like Tolisano may be the first to escape the Dunedin logjam. The bat is looking good - can anyone report if the glove's coming around?

Nice to see Goinsm McDade and Ramirez on fire this month, though Wellinton's strikeouts remain an issue. He appears to be a raw talent - anyone have any intel on what kind of player he could become with some refinements?

Thanks Mamboon:

Did Pastornicky have much to do defensively?  He just started playing second base and I wonder how that is going?

I don't think Tolisano is going anywhere.  We can't go back to rushing prospects after one month of encouraging results not rushing them.  Remember that Tolisano would be a draft eligible junior this year if he went to college.  They predominantly will be playing short season ball.

The ticket lines were so long for Ottawa's IBL home opener last night that they ended up letting a lot of fans enter for free.  (Paid attendance 3724, but actual attendance believed to be 4000+).

The concessions were not ready, with 30-minute lineups, beer for sale but not allowed in the stands, coffee unavailable.  Of course, I've experienced long lineups at some past Ottawa games also.

I wasn't at this game, but I saw part of it on the Rogers 22 community channel here in Ottawa.  They said the broadcast was also being carried on some southwestern Ontario Rogers channels.

The Rogers announcers called the IBL a "weekend league", saying the players have regular jobs during the week.  Ottawa's starting pitcher was a 34-year-old formerly drafted by the Jays (Dave Steffler) who now works in Ottawa and probably won't be able to make some of the road trips.  They said the Mississauga team's 3 regular starting pitchers are still in school in U.S. colleges finishing exams at the moment.

(Sunday's doubleheader is also on the local Rogers channel, to be joined in progress at 2pm.  They just play 7-inning games in double-headers.)

On Victoria Day (Monday May 24) the Toronto Maple Leafs will make their one trip to Ottawa for a double-header.

D'Arnaud has been on the DL for quite a while.  Does anyone know what the nature of his injury is?

Kyle Drabek now has had 22 good Eastern League starts.  Normally, he'd be off to triple A, but there might be more reluctance than usual because of the environment.  His control has been a tad spotty, and in Las Vegas, that creates additional diffiiculties.

Mike:

D'Arnaud has a sore back.  The Jays thought it was a tweaked muscle.  It wasn't believed to be serious but it has been a while and backs can be tricky.

While Alvarez has looked good, his low strikeouts are worrisome. History has shown that K's and BB's tend to be good predictors of future success. Gerry, any comments on Alvarez from this perspective?

Adam Calderone watch:

First inning: pop out

Third inning: Home run

Alvarez is so young that the expectation is he will get stronger and better as he gets older.   Last year he was considered a thrower rather than a pitcher, but he is continually learning how to set up hitters so his K numbers should get better as he gets more experienced.

Among BA's comments in the prospect handbook were that Alvarez needed to tighten his breaking ball, not rush his delivery with runners on base, and get stronger.  All of those should help increase his strikeouts.

Gerrry,

A couple - three fielding opportunities for Pastornicky last evening... he looked very comfortable at 2nd.  My guess is that he should do fine.  I  will be able to see him a couple of times in the next week or so in Dunedin.  I will report my impressions as he gets more time in at 2nd.

By the way, overall Dunedin looks like a much better team this year.  Adjusting to the new manager, etc seems to be going well.  Their better talent this year is a big contributor too.

While I overall agree about caution regarding promotions, there are two I'd like to see soon (beyond the presumed advancement of Adeiny):

Emaus to Vegas and Sobo bounced up to NH.

Given their relative ages and levels, there is a lot of logic to advancing Sobo past Aherns et al.
