Been wondering how the Jays' AFL players have been doing?

The Jays share the Peoria Javelinas (I'm just gonna assume that means javelins in Spanish) with Cleveland, Houston, Seattle and Boston. They started playing last Tuesday, October 12. Here's a brief rundown of Jay-related results:

Tuesday, October 12 - Surprise 8 Peoria 6

Eric Thames: 1-4
Mike McDade: 2-4, 2B, RBI

Wednesday, October 13 -Peoria 7 Surprise 4

Eric Thames: 1-4, 2 RBI
Dan Farquhar: 1 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 ER

Thursday, October 14 - Peoria 4 Other Peoria 4 (11 inn.)

Mike McDade: 2-4
Eric Thames: 2-5, 2 2B, R
Alan Farina: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 K
Matt Daly: 2 IP, 1 BB, 2 K

Friday, October 15 - Peoria 13 Other Peoria 5

Eric Thames: 4-5, 2 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, 1 K
Mike McDade: 1-4, 2B, BB, 3 R, RBI
Dan Farquhar: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 3 K

Saturday, October 16 - Scottsdale 6 Peoria 4

Adam Loewen: 1-4, HR, K
Marc Rzepzynski: 4 IP, 4 H, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 ER

And there were no games yesterday.

Of the club's AFL players, only Adeiny Hechavarria hasn't gotten any game action yet. Apparently he's being blocked by his Cuban compatriot Jose Iglesias. I'm not really sure how the AFL works - maybe they want to give Iglesias a regular schedule for a week or 2, then switch and give the starting spot to Hech.

Anyway, it's way too small a sample size to say anything meaningful about anyone, but I just thought you guys might like to know.

Thanks for the update.  Thames seems to really be lighting it up.  Maybe working his way onto the radar even moreso this offseason if he continues his impressive Fall.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I'm pretty sure Hech has a tight hamstring and that's why he hasn't seen any action yet.

yeah Hech is nursing a hamstring injury or he would have been recieving plenty of playing time(at SS or 2B or 3B) because he was designated as a priority player by the club

Dave,

Javelinas are small pig-like animals, with fancy hair, from the peccary family.

Wait, you mean Spanish words aren't just English words with o's or a's added on to the end??! So gato doesn't mean gun? Playa doesn't mean a theater production? My world is crashing down around me!

The Javelina's roster has 40 players on it. Some of the pitchers are quite old,Dec 1983 is the oldest pitcher. Then 2 position players born 1990. I suppose they are all talented prospects.
I suppose there must be some guidelines for distributing playing time, so no organization feels cheated.
I for one will look at the time between outings of players. I would not want to see a relief pitcher wait 4-6 days between outings and thereby get stale. Then I believe 3-4 games in a row will allow a batter to get in a groove, then he can sit out the next 4 games.

I was wondering why Hech hadn't played yet, because I too heard he was a priority player over Iglesias.

BTW, Mastroianni (5 for 5 last game) and Henderson Alvarez have had very positive starts to their seasons in the various Caribbean Leagues.  Stats of all participants can be found here.

It's an animal found in Arizona. Makes sense. I'd like to see the team logo, though.

How did Thames do against LHP this year?  His numbers look great overall especially considering he played in New Hampshire the entire season and doesn't have many professional at-bats, but I haven't been able to find his AA splits and his inability to hit lefties used to be a concern.

Platoon player still or the potential to be an everyday LF?

TamRa - Tuesday, October 19 2010 @ 05:28 PM EDT (#224255) #
Thames was much worse against LHP this year but my understanding is that this is not consistant with his previous history. likely an abberation at this point.

Heche started the AFL game today at short but was pinch hit for in the fifth.  Not sure if he aggravated his hammy or whether it was just precautionary.

Farina's in to pitch for Peo J.  Sitting mostly 92-93 with his fastball, but touched 94 once.  Also threw a 79mph curve and a 83mph slider, if you believe MLB Gameday.  Hmmm short, righty reliever sitting 92-93 with a slider?  That sounds familiar.

By the way, how can the performance level of the Mexican League be compared to MLB? If the stats of that league is to be taken as AAA level performance, there could be some interesting players there.

Baseball America has come out with their 2010 draft report cards this week and their overview today.  They have the Blue Jays as the 3rd best draft after the Indians and Red Sox.

Obviously BA and all of us know that its still very early but its still nice to be recognized by BA - they spoke with scouting directors, scouts and player development officials to come up with their rankings.

Gerry - Friday, October 22 2010 @ 01:24 PM EDT (#224369) #

Draft report cards are close to useless.  They essentially rehash the draft opinions of BA or whoever else does them.  Half of the Jays top picks didn't play in 2010 and those that did had limited time on the field.

The Jays score well because they had lots of extra picks.  They scored well in 2007 as well, before Ahrens, Jackson and co failed to develop as expected.

The first valuable evaluation of the draft will come this time next year once all of these player get a full season of playing time.

The BA report card likes McGuire and Sweeney, obviously, and of course Dyson, Wojo, Sanchez and Syndergaard.  They do say that Chris Hawkins was the best athlete drafted by the Jays.

finch - Friday, October 22 2010 @ 02:32 PM EDT (#224380) #

Did the picks fail the Blue Jays or did the Blue Jays fail the draft picks in terms of development?

I believe that Ahrens isn't a failure quite yet. He's right about where you would expect him coming out as a 4th year College Player, no?

Mike Green - Friday, October 22 2010 @ 02:56 PM EDT (#224382) #
It's a complicated story, which has been only partly written.  The Jays drafted 10 players in the first 5 rounds in 2007: Ahrens, Arencibia, Cecil, Jackson, Magnuson, Tolisano, Eiland, Farina, Mills and Rzepczynski.  So far, it appears that the collegiate drafts have developed much better than the high schoolers, and the pitchers much better than the position players.

Gerry's point is a good one.  The draft report card doesn't really tell you much except BA's view of the upside of the various players drafted.  We may get some read on McGuire by mid-June, but otherwise, there is not likely to be much in the way of useful information about most of the new drafts until the end of August.

Gerry - Friday, October 22 2010 @ 02:59 PM EDT (#224383) #
I agree re: Ahrens, I didn't say he was a failure, I just said he failed to deliver as expected.  Back in 2007 you would have expected a first round pick, even from high school, to be above Lansing/Dunedin by the end of 2010.

Apologies – next time I will make sure to note that a subscription is required.

As I stated, it is too early to put too much emphasis on such a ranking but its just another positive response by the media and the scouting profession to the Jays 2010 draft.  And, yes, I would agree part of the reason for the positive response is the number of picks the Jays had in the first 3 rounds.

Question from the BA chat.

Phil N (North York): I was surprised to see the Blue Jays at #3 for best draft - especially since they didnt have many players rank in top 5 in any category listed.

John Manuel: Thanks to everyone coming out for the chat. I don't think that's necessarily the way to think about it, Phil. I just think the Jays had a strong effort all the way around--pitchers such as Aaron Sanchez and Asher Wojciechowski went later than might have been expected, and I like some of their young hitters, such as Chris Hawkins and Marcus Knecht and Kellen Sweeney. It's a balanced haul, augmented by two of the best prep LHPs available in Griffin Murphy and Justin Nicolino. Not a surprise at all, for me, that they ranked third, I thought coming in they'd be top 5 and they earned it. Strong effort by the entire, expanded Jays scouting staff and first-year scouting director Andrew Tinnish.

.....BTW - remember how high BA was about Doofus's first draft in 2002.....

Can I humbly request that Bauxites refrain from terms like "Doofus" to describe MLB managers, coaches, GMs, players, etc?   It's very annoying.  Everyone in major-league baseball has a reasonable amount of intelligence, even if we disagree with the decisions that they sometimes make.  Calling anyone a "doofus" is hardly a useful way of advancing our understanding of anything.  Please -- analyze their decisions, quibble with their personnel moves, disagree with their trades or their bullpen management, but please don't toss around insults.  It just alienates people and gets in the way of accurate analysis.

Gerry - Friday, October 22 2010 @ 04:32 PM EDT (#224388) #
We agree and I have already e-mailed 85bluejay asking him to refrain from using that expression in future.
bpoz - Friday, October 22 2010 @ 08:31 PM EDT (#224403) #
JP Richardi's 2008 &09 drafts have a few young players that I like. AJ Jiminez, T Pastornicky, J Talley in 08 and D Hutchinson, K Hobson all in the later rounds. AA 2010 as well had some young late picks that seem good.

OK to me it is now more obvious that JP was building his team with safer college picks, and he had success there. In the later rounds he picked young players but most went unsigned due to I am guessing Money. IN 07,08,09 a lot more young picks were made and there is still time before any final evaluation.

I agree as well. Unless someone is talking about Joe Morgan or Jim Bowden :)

Everyone in major-league baseball has a reasonable amount of intelligence, even if we disagree with the decisions that they sometimes make.

Hear hear!

There seems to be a strong urge for average folks to slander those they disagree with in high places in that way.

I've had the conversation dozens of times about George W. bush here in the states - I wasn't that impressed with him overall, i thought he was an awfully mediocre president on balance - but it always steamed me that his opposition so often resorted to carrying on about how stupid he supposedly was.

People don't get to those levels, either in politics or sports or business - by lacking for brains.

It's simply a matter, usually, of different priorities.

that's not to say that one cannot take strong issue with anyone's choices - gosh knows I have to fight mightily to not call Bavasi (late of Seattle) or Morre (in KC) morons because I don't get their choices - but objectively, they are not - no matter how poor their choices.
