Only Dunedin (12-2), who lead their North division in the Florida State League were on the win side of things Friday night, continuing what has become a 5 game win streak.  The other leader in the Jays farm system is Lansing who lost Friday, but remain on top of the Eastern division of the Midwest League with a 12-3 record.  New Hampshire went down Friday morning, sinking to a 6-9 record and now sit third in the Eastern division of the Eastern League.  Las Vegas lost, settling into third place of the PCL Pacific South division with a record of 4-12.

Notably, the long ball lumber was largely silent Friday, with Jonathan Diaz of New Hampshire hitting the only round tripper on the farm, a 2 run blast.  He was due. His last homer was in August of last year.

Las Vegas 2  Salt Lake 10

Bowing to Salt Lake, the 51s could only squeeze a couple of runs out of 12 hits.  Starter Tim Redding (0-2) took the loss with 3 IP, allowing 4 runs on 7 hits with a couple of Ks.  Relievers Andrew Carpenter, Jerry Gill, Bill Murphy and Bobby Korecky wouldn’t put out the fire either, collectively allowing 6 more runs on another 8 hits.  Yan Gomes (1-5, 2B, RBI, K) committed his second defensive miscue of the season, a throwing error in the first.

Las Vegas plated their only 2 runs in the 7th inning after two walks to Anthony Gose (0-4, R, BB, 2Ks) and Adeiny Hechavarria (4-4, R, BB).  They moved on to 2nd and 3rd on a Travis Snider (2-4, 2B, BB) ground out.  Gose scored on a David Cooper (1-5, 2B, RBI) ground out and Hechavarria came across on a Gomes double.   Travis d’Arnaud (2-4, BB) had the other multi-hit outing.  Moises Sierra (1-5,K) and Chris Woodward (1-5, 2Ks) each singled while Mike McCoy (0-2, 2BB, K) went hitless with a pair of walks.

New Hampshire 3  New Britain 7

Nearly 7,300 home field faithful saw New Britian best the Fisher Cats with a 4 run outburst in the 8th inning.  Starter Yohan Pino went 6.0 IP, allowing 3 runs on 3 hits, including an HR.  Casey Lawrence (0-1) just up from Dunedin took the lost allowing a 4 run outburst in the 8th with 5 hits, including a 3 run HR.

New Hampshire’s offence was limited to the 3rd and 4th innings.  In the 3rd, the Fisher Cats got on the board with a Jonathan Diaz (1-4, R, HR, 2 RBIs, K) 2 run homer plating John Tollisano (0-3, 2BB, K).  They added another run in the 4th after Kevin Howard (1-4, R, 2Ks) walked and stole 2nd and 3rd and went home on a throwing error.  Brad Glenn (2-3, BB) had the Fisher Cats’ only multi-hit performance.  Justin Jackson (1-3, BB) added a single.

Dunedin 11  Brevard County 4

The D-Jays dominated Brevard, despite being out hit 13-9.  In their fifth win in a row, Dunedin’s four pitchers spread out the 13 hits, allowing only 4 runs.  Shawn Griffen (3-0) took his 3rd win, allowing no hits or run and striking out 3 in 2.1 IP.  Jake Marisnick (0-4, R, BB, 2Ks) suffered a fielding error, his first of the year.

Friday night, Dunedin’s RBI Row was led by Ryan Schimpf (1-5, R, 3B, 3RBIs), Michael Crouse (1 for 3, 2B, 3RBIs, BB) and Jack Murphy (2-3, R, 3RBIs, BB).   Together, they accounted for 9 of Dunedin’s 11 Runs.  The other runs came from Jon Talley (1-3, 2R, RBI, 2BB, K) and Kevin Ahrens (1-2, R, RBI, 2BB).  The fifth inning saw Dunedin pushing in 4 runs and the 8th they put back Brevard for good with 5 runs scored.

Lansing 0  Burlington 2

Jessie Hernandez (1-1) took the loss, a heartbreaker, with 8 strike outs in 5.1 innings pitched.  Blake McFarland struck out 3 in relief and gave up a solo home run in the 8th.  Lansing booted one  - Andrew Burns (0-0, 3BB) his fourth error of the season, and threw one away – Kenny Wilson (0-3, K) his 1st error of the year.1-4

The Luggies didn’t muster any scoring.  They didn’t have much to work with, 4 hits spread out.  Jonathan Berti (2-4,K), Kevin Patterson (1-4, 2Ks) and Chris Hawkins (1-3) were the only Luggies’ hitters.

3rd Star                   Jack Murphy – 2-3, R, 3 RBIs, BB

Adeiny Hechavarria goes 4 for 4 plus a walk, scores a run and doesn't garner a star ? ... Mamboon, you're a tough marker .

So, after 40 PCL games and 175 ABs, Hechavarria has 65 hits for a .371 BA ... when does small sample size pass trending legitimacy ?

Shane Opitz has been promoted to Lansing. Jorge Vega-Rosado was placed on the DL yesterday.

Likely never for some people who have made up their minds about a prospect and can use the handy "everybody hits in the PCL" line.

When you are not hitting home runs and you are striking out (36 strikeouts in 40 games) and you are batting .375 (i.e. you're batting over .450 on balls in play), most everyone will treat that as not particularly indicative that you are a great hitter, particularly if you've hit .240 everywhere else.  When Jarrett Hoffpauir was called up to the Jays in June, 2010, many (including myself) felt that he had turned a corner after posting far better numbers than Hechavarria in Las Vegas.  That didn't work out so well.
Cynicalguy - Saturday, April 21 2012 @ 03:06 PM EDT (#254870) #
Yes, Hoffpauir failed...I guess that's a big enough sample size of PCL prospects to make a judgement on other PCL prospects with high batting averages. No one said his performance in AAA proves Hech is a great hitter now, but I just don't get the total dismissal of his numbers by some. I would be more doubtful of the numbers if a prospect with little power suddenly hit a high number of home runs as soon as he is promoted to the PCL, but most reports indicate Hech has been hitting a lot of line drives...so in this sense I guess the fact a lot of his hits aren't home runs actually leads me to believe there might be something more than a hot streak or PCL inflation.
Mike Green - Saturday, April 21 2012 @ 03:28 PM EDT (#254871) #
What's a good BABIP?  Maybe .360.  If Hechavarria was doing that, he would have a batting average of .270, with few walks and no power.    When Travis Snider hits .436/.516/.745 to start a season, we know that doesn't mean the same thing that as it does anywhere else, but if we give him a BABIP of .300 instead of .457, his line would be roughly .328/.422/.547 and we would still think "man he is off to a good start".
Cynicalguy - Saturday, April 21 2012 @ 03:43 PM EDT (#254872) #
So you dismissing him solely based on BABIP...add the 20 games he was raking at the end of time in Double A...basically you are saying he's been getting extremely lucky for 60 games.
TamRa - Saturday, April 21 2012 @ 04:32 PM EDT (#254873) #
I love what Hech is doing, rational or not, BUT i am watching the BB/K numbers. that was what AA had on his mind with lawrie and i'm sure it's part of the program for Hech.

Probably right now they are just letting him feel his oats a bit but before they consider him to have forced this issue, that BB/K ratio will have to get much better.
scottt - Saturday, April 21 2012 @ 05:11 PM EDT (#254876) #
There is no room for Hech on the big team.

If he keeps this up and Escobar finds himself on the DL, then it would make sense to call him up. Otherwise, he'll wait until September.

Randy Boone gets the start for Dunedin tonight. It's about a year since Boone had TJ surgery.

"Likely never for some people who have made up their minds about a prospect and can use the handy "everybody hits in the PCL" line."

I think that most of us who aren't on the Hech-Train are just looking at the larger body of work... And there certainly is a point where you can start to say, "Hey, he may have turned it around." But we are still at least another 150 at bats away from the point where I start to raise an eyebrow...

I also don't get all the Hech love, because of Yunel...

After years of Woodward/Adams/Clayton/McDonald/Eckstein types I'm thrilled the Jays have a top 10 shortstop and I'm not excited about the prospect of throwing him away because we have a guy who might have a chance of being as good... I just don't get it...

Why does everyone love Hech so much? Because AA gave him 10 million dollars? Is it because of the groupthink that is sports media who wrote 20 articles about him this spring? Is there something I'm missing in regards to the value of an-all-defense-no-hit shortstop?

I will be thrilled as Hech if he turns out... But at this point I would be shocked if the Jays are even thinking about handing him over the keys at any point... And as for all the hype created this spring, I can't help but speculate if the Jays aren't just trying to create a trade market for him...

I've always liked Yan Gomes as a prospect.  A guy who can catch, play 3rd or 1st, and swing the bat.  He's going to be a major leaguer.  Doesn't walk much, and is not regarded as a power hitter, but he did hit 22 HR's over the past 2 seasons in just 549 AB's.  Nice to see him finally getting some regular playing time.
TamRa - Saturday, April 21 2012 @ 10:29 PM EDT (#254886) #
let it be noted for the record - I'm down with Yunel and have no burning desire at all to see him off the team in favor of Hech.

In fact, I'd be just fine with Hech spending most of 2013 in AAA (Gose too) - I don't get the rush. I'm fine with Esco moving over to 2B when the time comes but I'm in no hurry.

I think given our lineup and our depth, slow is better.
I'd have d'Arnaud spend the first couple of months next year (at least) in AA and not worry about who the catcher is in 2014 until that off-season;
I'd have Gose spend as much time as necessary there until his offense demanded promotion, or until he was in Marisnick's way;
I'd let Hech play there until he was out of options unless injuries changed the schedule;
I'd promote the Dunedin outfield one level at a time;

So forth and so on.

Well that's a bit cynical.

right now they are just letting him feel his oats

that could be a problem...if by "feel his oats" you mean "sow his oats"

Sow your oats: To lead a promiscuous and self-indulgent lifestyle. Less stylistically, to nail lots of
women before you settle down.   (Urban Dictionary)

ayjackson - Sunday, April 22 2012 @ 10:27 AM EDT (#254908) #

I think the encouraging thing with Hech's development is that we're not hoping for a 800-900 OPS guy.  If he could project to a .270/.310/.390 type of guy, with elite defence at SS, I think we'd have a very valuable player.

bpoz - Sunday, April 22 2012 @ 11:02 AM EDT (#254911) #
Well said AYJ. This thread is about the farm after all. I expect a bountiful harvest, AA has left no stone unturned.

I just don't get your irrational frustration based on some fans optimism of a high ceiling Jays prospect. There's no danger of the Jays throwing away Yunel because one prospect who plays the same defensive position puts up some good offensive numbers in the minors be it in an league with inflated hitting numbers or not. Having multiple good players/prospects in the middle of diamond is just something very positive for an organization.

" And as for all the hype created this spring, I can't help but speculate if the Jays aren't just trying to create a trade market for him..."

I am sick of people thinking it's so easy to fool other GMs just by talking up prospects. This has been a theme since this off season from fans after the Nestor Molina trade...people really think other GMs just check media quotes from AA and Farrell and trade for prospects based on that. Any organization would rely on their scouts for such trades and pay absolutely zero attention whatsoever on what AA or Farrell might have said about a prospect to the Toronto media.

I'm not saying "other GMs just check media quotes from AA and Farrell and trade for prospects based on that." I'm just saying they can try to add a little value. Especially with the groupthink that is baseball prospect media..

GMs do get fooled by prospect hype from time to time, a recent example would be Brett Wallace... He was caught up in a game of fools hot potato....

My reason for thinking they might be trying to add a little value:

- Hech shouldn't be in AAA right now. He hasn't hit at any of the lower levels...

- There was also a ton of articles written about him this spring; way more than there should have been for a guy with his body of work.

- I've also heard Anthopolous say that most GMs browse blogs and baseball media in general and its usually part of the morning routine in Toronto.. (I wanna say I heard this in a radio interview)...
