Two new potential slogans:

1) "Free David Cooper!"

2) "Confine Adam Lind to Captivity!"

Hmmm, these slogans appear to be complementary.

You don't hear Ryan Goins' name mentioned often, but he's having quite the season so far at AA.  Not sure what his defense is like, and he doesn't handle lefties well, but he sure is torching righties.  Possible backup infielder or platoon player?   Yan Gomes' average is up to .388, and I see he was in there at catcher.   He's also played 1st and 3rd recently.  Maybe we'll see him in Toronto this summer.  McDade hitting like he is in New Hampshire at age 22 (about to turn 23) interests me a lot more than Cooper hitting .330 at Las Vegas at age 25.  Cooper actually is hitting about 30 points below his average last year.  Nice to see him hit a couple out, though.  If he can develop some power he's got a shot.

Have heard in the past that Goins was likely destined for 2B if he ever made it to the majors. Obviously, a player who can also (at minimum) handle spot duty at shortstop also has value. He certainly seems to have lept past Diaz on the Jays' depth chart and may even get a chance to push Hechavarria this summer. There aren't many left-handed middle infielders around. Nice to have Johnson at the major league level and Goins making waves.

Also very nice to see David Cooper step up the early power production. If he can add a touch more power, or uppercut to his swing, he has a chance to push Lind. Right now. Of course, he'd better hurry. Snider's going to mend soon enough.

whiterasta80 - Monday, May 07 2012 @ 09:57 AM EDT (#255932) #

I think I need to brush up on my English, because I just don't understand "push Lind" in that context.  Are you suggesting that Cooper (or anyone else for that matter) would be appreciably worse than Lind right now?

Cooper may not be the guy (I think he deserves 20 games), but the Jays really do need to think about doing something about Lind, we're sacrificing wins right now.

was it just me or did Lind get closer to the plate this weekend and hit some balls more sharply?

T.Snider (24): 75ab, 4hr, 23rbi, 11bb, 11k, .400/.477/.693/1.070
Y.Gomes (24): 103ab, 3hr, 19rbi, 5bb, 16k, .388/.422/.583/1.005
D.Cooper (25): 111ab, 4hr, 27rbi, 13bb, 12k, .333/.403/.568/.971

And positionally, all three of these guys can easily slide into the lineup by dropping Lind. And Francisco too, for that matter.

"McDade hitting like he is in New Hampshire at age 22 (about to turn 23) interests me a lot more than Cooper hitting .330 at Las Vegas at age 25."

Yeah, but Cooper hitting .364 with a .439obp in vegas at age 24 has to be more interesting than either.

I'm not a huge McDade fan, but he has been better than cooper in AA so far. That doesn't say too much of course, because Cooper sucked in AA, but given what Cooper's done in AAA this comp does give me a bit more faith in McDade (when I had very little coming into the year):

AA - Age 22

D.Cooper: 538pa, 59bb/92k, .258/.340/.389/.729
M.McDade: 524pa, 28bb/104k, .281/.328/.457/.785

AA - Age 23

D.Cooper: 553pa, 52bb/74k, .257/.327/.442/.769
M.McDade: 121pa, 16bb/23k, .327/.413/.452/.865

The interesting thing about McDade's start to this year has been his sharp spike in BBs - 5.3bb% last year to 13.2bb% this year. That's a jump from awful to excellent in the walks department. What was his biggest weakness has looked like a strength so far this year. If he can continue showing patience, then with his always-obvious power potential he looks like a pretty good prospect. But he has to keep drawing those walks.
sam - Monday, May 07 2012 @ 01:05 PM EDT (#255951) #
Uglyone, McDade has looked totally in control of the strike zone in recent games. It's no accident that his walk numbers are up. However, I think McDade and Cooper might be afflicted with the same problem going forward. I'm not sure either possess that elite bat speed/power to really hold down a first base gig on a competitive team. Cooper will run into some homeruns here are there, but I doubt he'll ever eclipse 20 home runs at the big leagues and the same could probably be said for Mike McDade.
sam - Monday, May 07 2012 @ 01:11 PM EDT (#255952) #
Dan, Goins is a smallish 2b with so-so defense. In fact, it might even be a little subpar. In the games I watched he booted a ball or two and just didn't look that great in the field. At the plate he blooped a couple singles. He's certainly one to keep an eye and so long as he continues to produce he might one day see the Major Leagues, but don't get your hopes up for anything more than a Mike McCoy type player.

Kevin Goldstein was asked about McDade's ceiling and he replied, "bench bat." FWIW. Not that KG is infallible or anything.

The 51s made it all the way back to .500 this afternoon with a comeback victory.  Nice work from Hechavarria, Gose, and d'Arnaud at the top of the order, GWRBI from Cooper and perfect relief from Igarashi and Beck did the trick.  Since Snider went on the DL, the rest of the team has started to play like they are capable of playing (I am not suggesting any cause and effect, of course).
92-93 - Monday, May 07 2012 @ 05:08 PM EDT (#255966) #
Adam Lind should only have burned options in 2007 & 2008, and thus have one remaining. That being said, he's still this club's best option at 1B vs. RHP, so I'm not ready to run him out of town just yet.

16-13 with the team the Jays have and the way they have played thus far is an absolute success, IMO.

Lind: 940pa, .316obp, .791ops, .339woba, 111wRC+

Snider unfortunately isn't healthy, and the club presumably will want to make sure that he has made a full recovery before promoting him.  For the time being, Thames is a left-fielder and Encarnacion is a DH at least against RHP.  The present first base options against RHP are Lind and Cooper.  I imagine that they would be in the same range of offensive production.

Dylan Bundy is obviously not headed for stardom.  He is on track for his first decision, a loss.  True, he allowed 1 hit and no walks while striking out 8 in 3 innings.  Still, he has to take responsibility for that run- a strikeout/wild pitch allowed a runner to reach base and then throwing errors by the catcher and centerfielder allowed the run to score.  0-1, Mr. Bundy, is not how a great pitcher starts his career.

Any thoughts on players AA might go after as a potential 1B upgrade this summer? A few possibilities: Brandon Belt, Ike Davis, Brian LaHair, Carlos Lee, Justin Morneau, Mark Trumbo, maybe Logan Morrison (with some positional shuffling). It would be nice to acquire someone who could hold down the position for years (like Belt or Davis), but if the Jays are seriously in contention then a short-term acquisition could also make sense (and might cost less in prospect talent).

There will likely be some first basemen available at the deadline, but will there be anyone that AA and his scouts really like (and whom they can obtain at a fair price)? Of the above players, Belt, Davis and Morrison would seem to somewhat fit the "distressed asset" profile that has allowed the GM to pry away players in the past...

Bundy? Meh. Doesn't know how to win.

And no matter how much you tell me W-L doesn't matter, I'm still surprised every time I see Matt Cain's career record. 15 years ago the idea of extending a 69-73 SP for 115 million must've sounded well beyond batshit insane.

Re: Bundy.  If you start a game and go less than 5 innings you aren't eligible for wins, even in the minor leagues, remember?  So his first 6 starts he goes 3 innings each but starts each game.  Bundy's had an insane start to his career.

...but don't get your hopes up for anything more than a Mike McCoy type player.

At age 24, McCoy hit .270 in high A and at age 25, he hit .249 in AA.  Goins is much more advanced at age 24 than McCoy was.  Looking at the places where Goins spent the most time each year, he has hit .297, .308, .286 and now .316 at Auburn, Lansing, Dunedin and New Hampshire.  As a hitter, you'd like to see him do 1 of 3 things better - hit lefties better, hit for some power or draw some more walks.  I really like that steady progression year after year, though.  Hopefully, he continues to hit well in New Hampshire and maybe he gets a look in Vegas for the last month.  He's played his entire pro career at SS except for 10 games at 2B this year, and B-R lists his range factor at about 4.5 per game most seasons, until this year when he's been under 4 at SS.  Can't hurt having him play some 2B as well, especially if they see him as a potential utility guy.

I have to confess that I did not think much of Goins & Schimph when drafted in 2009 and then they did not impress me with their playing results.

Since they were high draft picks round 4 & 5 I should have had more faith. I think it was their small size but then Ellsbury & Pedroia are also small.
