The state of the Jays pitching staff is so precarious that when a pitcher does well in AAA or AA you think they might get called up.  Shawn Hill and John Silson both pitched well yesterday and both teams won.  Aaron Sanchez, Tom Robson and Kevin Comer also pitched well.  Dunedin scored in double figures to win while Vancouver were "beat up good".

Offensively Moises Sierra had a big night as did Eric Thames.  Kevin Nolan hit a grand slam and had 5 RBI.  Kevin Howard hit a game winning, extra innings, home run.

Sacramento 4  Las Vegas 11

Shawn Hill pitched well, six innings, six hits, six K's.  But it was Moises sierra who was the sparkplug in this game.  Sierra homered to give LV the lead.  In the fourth inning he scored the second run as Ricardo Nanita doubled him in.  The 51's took that 2-1 lead to the seventh where they scored five runs.  Two runs scored on a double from Eric Thames and two more on another double by Sierra.  Thames doubled in two more in a four run eighth.  Sacramento scored three in the ninth to make the score a little more respectable.  The four game series with the division lead River Cats was split so LV remain 4.5 games back.

Sierra and Anthony Gose had three hits each for the 51's.  Thames had the two doubles and 4 RBI's.  Travis Snider was 2-3 with two walks.

New Hampshire 5 Portland 3 - 13 innings

The Fisher Cats led 3-0 in the seventh. John Tolisano singled and doubled and scored two runs. Mark Sobolewski homered. Sobo led the hitters with three hits over the 13 innings. Tolisano, Howard and Brian Bocock had two hits each.

John Stilson had been roughed up in his last start but he was back in form on this night. He pitched five shutout innings, three hits, three walks and five K's. Stilson threw 79 pitches, 45 for strikes. At one point in the fourth inning he was close to 50/50 balls and strikes. He was followed by Sam Dyson who has been pitching well for New Hampshire. Dyson left with two on and two out in his second inning of work but Aaron Loup came on to give up two hits and allow two runs to score. Scott Gracey came on in the ninth with a 3-2 lead and promptly walked the first two hitters. He got out of it with one run allowed but now it was a tied game and headed to extras.

The game went to the thirteenth inning when Kevin Howard hit a two run home run and Matt Wright shut down Portland for the win.

Bradenton 3 Dunedin 12

Dunedin scored 12 runs on nine hits, they were helped by some poor pitching. For example in the sixth inning the bases were loaded with walks when Kevin Nolan hit a grand slam. In the seventh the first six hitters reached on three walks, two hit batters and an error. Ryan Schimpf and Michael Crouse had two hits each.   Nolan ended with 5 RBI.

Egan Smith started and went six, allowing one earned run.

Lansing 3 Fort Wayne 10

It was the good and the ugly in Fort Wayne. Aaron Sanchez was the good, five shutout innings, two hits one walk, three K's. But three pitchers out of the bullpen gave up ten runs in the last three innings.

Kevin Patterson tripled in the first run. Kenny Wilson tripled in the second run and scored the third on a single by Kevin Pillar. Pillar, Patterson and KC Hobson had two hits each.

Vancouver 5  Everett 6

Vancouver scored a run in the first inning on three straight two out singles.  But thereafter is was all Everett who took a 6-1 lead to the ninth.  A two out error scored two runs followed by a two run single by Balbino but that was it.  Taylor Cole was unable to make the start with a strained oblique so three bull-peners pitched the eight innings.  Balbino and Matt Newman had two hits each.

Bluefield 3 Burlington 0

When there is a shutout you have to look at the pitching. Tom Robson started and went four innings, 3 hits, no walks, 1 k. Kevin Comer followed him, also four innings, one hit, no walks, four K's. Nate Rode from BA tweeted the following: "Both Tom Robson and Kevin Comer in the high 80s tonight. Comer flashed good CB & CH." For good measure Colby Broussard struck out the side in the ninth.

Carlos Ramirez homered in the fifth for the first run. Dickie Thon tripled and scored in the seventh and he was hit by a pitch and scored in the ninth. Christain Lopes and Matt Dean had two hits each.

GCL Jays 1 GCL Braves 0 - 4 innings suspended

These teams were scheduled for a doubleheader but only got four innings in before the game was called. Alberto Tirado and Kyle Anderson each pitched two innings.

Travis Snider has 2 years and 15 days of service time.  There is no economic benefit to the club for him to be in Las Vegas, so the decision is simply based on healing of the wrist injury and development.  Free him!

He seems to have gotten a much better handle on the strike zone.

You have to wonder if Adam Lind's comments in the National Post article of "...we're not good enough to be in the big leagues" was referencing anyone else specifically down in Vegas.

Actually, there is. If you call him up now, he might still be a "super two" (early June+15 days). But since he is not Ryan Howard, I'm not sure how much money the Jays are really saving. So I doubt that's the main reason. And even super two is out of the question for sure within a few days.

My excitement for Stilson is tempered by the above noted report that he was hovering around 50/50 for balls/strikes last night. That's a recipe for disaster in the big leagues (see Drabek, Kyle). Hopefully, he can improve his control to the point where he's at a 65/35 split for strikes/balls at minimum.

As an aside, Dyson was the draftee who had post-draft surgery, correct? I believe I was confusing Stilson with him earlier. The fact that he's already at New Hampshire is a nice story. Granted, he's on the older side but he missed a good year recovering from Tommy John so it's always nice to see kids bounce back strongly from that. I assume the Jays are going to develop him as a bullpen arm going forward? Does anyone know?

Travis Snider tweeted earlier today that he was 'going home'.

Was he talking about HOME-home, or has he been called up?

rpriske - Wednesday, June 27 2012 @ 11:28 AM EDT (#259479) #

False alarm. The tweet was: Can't believe it's been 5 months! #imgoinghome #mybed #mycouch #showbbq #showtub #godscountry

It has been a lot less than 5 months since he was in Toronto, so that is not what he was referring to.

Las Vegas opens a series in Tacoma tonight.
Krylian19 - Wednesday, June 27 2012 @ 11:34 AM EDT (#259481) #
Probably cause they're playing in Tacoma and Travis is from Washington.

The 51's faced Daniel Straily last night, a reasonably highly touted pitcher who recently got promoted to AAA. He's got good K numbers. I was very curious to see how Snider would handle it. He made 1 out in 5 plate appearances. This is obviously a good game and a good sign.

But he's essentially in mid-Spring training form again. Give him one or two more weeks and he'll be good to go. Hopefully he's finally turned a corner.

I think one of two things have to happen for a call up: the Jays have to drop five games out of wild card contention or Rajai Davis needs to start playing much worse than he is currently. Only in either of those situations will there be a full time spot for Travis.
85bluejay - Wednesday, June 27 2012 @ 01:56 PM EDT (#259492) #
I hope Rajai Davis plays even better  - He will look good in the Reds outfield starting the 2nd half of the season

Provided the Jays don't trade him, Sam Dyson might be a nice arm out of the Jays bullpen one day. Dyson was a fairly touted amateur prospect and was drafted twice prior to the Jays selecting him in the fourth round in 2010. Injuries have always been his achilles heel, having undergone both reconstructive shoulder and elbow surgeries, but he has always come back strong maintaining his very good fastball. For example, in his senior season at South Carolina Dyson was known to have some fairly epic starts throwing well over 140 pitches over nine innings and maintaining his low to mid-90s fastball throughout.

Anyways the secondary stuff lags well behind the fastball as perhaps indicated by the low strikeout numbers, but he's the type of arm and athlete all organizations love to have with the track record of pitching in competitive games with a very good fastball. I'm sure they're working with him on developing something of a two-pitch mix.

Good ol' Romero, when you need your "ace" to step up and win a big series, he flounders and allows a six run first. For all his twitter blustering in recent days I'd hope he'd actually pitch well.

Romero to me will probably be that perpetual wildcard. Talented, yes. The potential to win some games and put up very good numbers, certainly. Faith that he'll do it start to start, probably not. I think he's more a "two" than "one." Granted, he's always pitched poorly against the Red Sox.
Kelekin - Wednesday, June 27 2012 @ 03:41 PM EDT (#259497) #
This year he's barely a #3, sadly.  I hope for a good rebound in the second half.

As far as Dyson goes...there does seem to be early concerns.  His WHIP in AA would not support the ERA he has, and a 2.1 bb9 does not serve anyone well.  I do think this will improve, but I think you have to be cautiously optimistic about the guy at this point.

Kelekin - Wednesday, June 27 2012 @ 04:25 PM EDT (#259500) #
The lefty bullpen arm I've been championing for almost 3 years now, Matt Wright, has a 0.94 WHIP in AA.  2.3 bb9, 10.1 k9.  Those are some solid peripherals.  He's been consistently great as a reliever in three years, and I hope he does get a shot.

Nate Rode from BA must have a contact in Bluefield or following Bluefield or maybe he is in Bluefield. In addition to the tweet above from last nights game he has a couple more tonight:

Through 3 IP #BlueJays RHP Roberto Osuna has sat 91. Touched 93 and 94. Solid low 80s SL and good 79-80 CH.

Better than I was expecting. Not great by any stretch but I've seen much worse. @SMcEwen_eh Has Osuna kept his weight in check?
Impossibles - Wednesday, June 27 2012 @ 07:56 PM EDT (#259507) #
I don't recall anybody ever calling him a #1 (at least not after he struggled in the minors).

Seems like its mental, same problems he had in the minors, he needs to get the bulldog mentality back and go after hitters instead of trying to nibble and be too fancy.

The Yankees are having Pitching issues, possibly coming back to the pack if they continue.
sam - Wednesday, June 27 2012 @ 08:16 PM EDT (#259509) #
Thanks Gerry for the heads up. Those aren't bad reports on either Robson, Comer, or Osuna. I'll admit that I am a little disappointed to hear the velocity readings. Usually you get the kids into professional instruction and workouts, coupled with an additional year of physical development, you should get a little bit of a spike in velocity. Guys are still very, very young though.

Looks like the Angels were stealing Hammel's signs tonight.
