Three farmhands had four hits each. Kevin Pillar had four as part of a 15 hit attack, Brad Glenn had five RBI's and New Hampshire won. That was the only win for the affiliates. Justin Jackson made his pitching debut and did well, one run allowed in 2.2 innings. He followed Alonzo Gonzalez who was hit hard and who put Lansing in a hole. Christian Lopes and Chris Hawkins had four hits each in a losing cause. Buffalo had a chance to win but the bullpen and the defense blew it. Jim Negrych had three more hits. Dunedin lost a close one.

But in the top of the eighth Clint Everts was victimized by a LaRoche error and an infield single. The call went out for Jeremy Jeffress just up from Dunedin. A walk and a 2 run single put the Bisons down by a run.

So far this season, I'm encouraged by the progression of the high school bats drafted by the Jays.

Lopes, Smith Jr, and Hawkins have been fairly decent. Although Lopes doesn't hit many HRs or walk a lot, he does make good contact and has shown gap power.

I'm hoping Anderson and Dean will show their power potential. Mitch Nay as well. I think being in Vancouver, I'll get to see some exciting prospects this summer.

Pitching wise, I'm excited to see what Mark Biggs can do!!

I have noticed that when you are hitting well, using the whole field, the power increases - home runs will come.   Usually when you try to hit home runs, your average suffered.   Lopes should be fine, but he's still several years away.

Pillar's career path is very interesting.  Drafted in 2011 out of college at age 22 in the 32nd round and is sent to the Appy League where he hits .347 with pop.  In 2012, he hits .322 in Lansing for most of the season with a 35-6 SB/CS and decent plate control, to earn a late-season callup to Dunedin and hits .323 there.  The club starts him off in 2013 in double A; he's hitting .339/.393/.484 so far this year with 10/3 SB/CS and 10 assists.  He has spent most of the season in left-field, but a fair bit of the time he has been in centerfield.  New Hampshire is not a particularly friendly hitting spot for a right-handed hitter.

As you might guess from his batting averages, he hits a lot of line drives and doesn't strike out much.  Yesterday, his 4-5 with a walk, included 4 line drives (one caught) and a ground ball single.

It looks like there might be an opening in left-field at some point in the not-too-distant future, and Pillar looks to me to be a good candidate.
