Miguel Castro to Bluefield, and Daniel Norris to Dunedin.

Today is the last day of the season in the GCL.

Playoff picture:

Dunedin and Bluefield are in.

Lansing and the GCL Jays are out.

Buffalo and New Hampshire each have a tragic number of 2 with 5 games left so it looks doubtful that they will make it.  New Hampshire has the better chance as they are behind one team while the Bisons are behind 3 teams.

Vancouver have a 1 game lead in their playoff chase thanks to Everett winning both halves of the season.  You could say that Vancouver has a 2 game lead because they reportedly own the tie breaker with the team right behind them.

GivenVancouver's playoff push their loss last night was a tough one.  The winning run for Vancouver was about to score in extra innings but the runner slipped rounding third base, fell down, and was just thrown out at the plate.  Then in the fourteenth, with two outs, back to back errors in the infield let the winning run score.

Vancouver making the playoffs would be a nice feelgood story, at least to me. Heading into the year the team imo was bereft of any talent at all, other than maybe uberfringey dickie thon.

But thanks to the draft and promotions, lugo dawson dantzler hobson dermody jiminez frank and reeves have made it a team well worth keeping an eye on. Making the playoffs would be a nice cherry on top of an imo pleasantly surprising season.

I was at the Nat last night and Melvin Garcia slipped between third and home. There was a steady light rain during the latter part of the game so he may have slipped due to that but it looked like he tripped over his own shadow. He came in to pinch-hit for Chaz Frank.

Dawel Lugo's homer appeared to clear the scoreboard. The ball just exploded off his bat. He was also steady with the glove at short. He has a very strong throwing arm.

Jeremy Gabryszwski settled down after giving up a run in the first 3 innings. I think he only reached 90 once. The bullpen was solid, especially Matt Dermody. He was just filling the strike zone. Alvido Jimenez did a nice job too. He was effectively changing speeds with pitches in the 70s, 80s and 90s.

LB Dantzler had a rough night at the plate. In one at-bat, he just missed out on a two run double by inches. He was 0-for-6. It was a playoff like atmosphere. I hope this will not be my last game here in 2013. This season has been quite a ride and I hope it will keep going for another 10 days or so.

I missed last night's game at the Nat but I have seen Lugo a couple of times.  I haven't seen anything to suggest that he couldn't handle SS going forward.  He has a strong arm and a decent amount of quickness.  He is a total hacker at the plate but he generates tremendous bat speed (fairly easily) and when he makes contact it has that certain sound that only the better hitters in the league can produce.

I haven't had a chance to see Dermody yet - could you give a thumbnail scouting report on him?

The Blue Jays and the Bisons extended their affiliation agreement for 2 extra years tonight. The affiliates care about attendance, and Buffalo crowds are up 12% this season...hence the extension. AA is in Buffalo tonight to sign the extension on the field between innings.

Sean Nolin had a no hitter through 5.2 innings tonight. The next hitter hit a solo home run, and Nolin was pulled.

Aaron Sanchez went 7 shutout innings tonight, four hits.

Manny Acta was at the game and tweeted:

"Manny Acta.....Wow... A young gun from #BlueJays is sitting at 95 mph in the 7th inning with pretty decent off speed stuff."

Great to see (only one BB, too). No guarantees, of course, but I could see the Sanchez bandwagon getting pretty full by around this time next year.

Keith Law says the 2014 draft is about 25% better in terms of talent than the 2013 draft. Interesting.

Also, he rates Nay more highly as a prospect than he rates Dean. In other words, Law says aye to Nay but nay to Dean. Or something like that.

Would hope so. The first time under the new draft rules mlb teams have a second shot at the 2011 high school class (with a few exeptions). What will be interesting to me is will more college juniors sign after round 10...getting very crowded in the top 10 rounds to punt picks anymore with the addition of quality depth from college junior class
Beyonder - Friday, August 30 2013 @ 10:44 AM EDT (#278547) #
mendocino. I get the point that the draft is generally more talented this year than last, but why are the top ten rounds getting crowded as a result of the draft rule changes? This past year (like every year) we also had college juniors entering the draft. How is it that you say the new draft Rules have created a talent glut? Are you saying that more high school draftees are electing to go to college as a result of the hard slotting?

sorry Beyonder i am a year ahead of myself 2015 draft the first draft hard slotting effecting the high school talent and the college talent
