Batter's Box Interactive Magazine Batter's Box Interactive Magazine Batter's Box Interactive Magazine

A few months ago I discussed why we had shut off new member registrations. To recap, the volume of spam member requests were creating a logistical nightmare and were in turn slowing the site. we were receiving hundreds of spam member requests every day and in our system they had to be manually declined one by one.

I am happy to announce that we will reopen registration later today or tomorrow and leave it open until Monday evening. So if you have been waiting to register now is your chance.

There is still a risk that we will think your email address is spam. If you have a dot ca address, or a Rogers or Bell address, you are fine. If you have a gmail, yahoo or hotmail address then you need to be careful. Most spam addresses include random letters and numbers. For batters box their user name is also usually random numbers or letters. If your email is a random collection of letters then you should select a user name that seems to be human, like a name or something Blue Jays related. You can also email roster at battersbox dot ca to confirm.

Please remember our rules relating to user names: Do not pretend to be a major league player or a member of the front office. You have wide latitude to select your user name but impersonation is verboten. You can use "Lawrie fan", or "not the real Brett Lawrie", but not "Brett Lawrie". Keep in mind that you will have the same username as long as you’re a registered user of Batter’s Box – a handle that seems timely and hilarious right now might become very old very fast.

If you have any issues or questions here is an old thread that explains how to setup an account and how to post.

Joe will let us know when we are open.

I personally confirm the comment about choosing your username carefully. I'm in about year 4 of wanting to change mine.

Heh.  That's why I almost always just use my real name. I understand why some prefer to avoid that, but I've never been one to hide my identity (which is kind of funny for a comic book collector).

Registration is now open!

I imagine there are basketball fans who are too young to know the root, and thus datedness, of the once-hip team name Raptors.

Like companies established in the 80s and 90s that had "2000" in their name to convey a futuristic sense of competence. And then the year 2000 came and they were stuck with their now backward-looking names.

Yes, me too whiterasta80 -- but at least we didn't call ourselves The Mighty Ducks!

Now that registration is open why not register again with a different name? You can then post that your new name is John Smith.

Since Joe opened up registration two hours ago we have 70 requests for registration. Email addresses interested include, and

The go-to registration user name for spammers now seems to be two letters followed by a surname. An example would be JoSmith. I have rejected many of these. I have approved what looked legit to me. If you have submitted a request and it hasn't been approved shoot an email to roster at battersbox dot ca and let us know your user name and we will get it approved.

Long time reader (stalker? creeper?) here. Glad to finally be able to joint he BattersBox community.

Gerry, is there something preventing the Box from implementing a captcha gateway in the registration process, or any of the captcha alternative methods (honey pots, verified sign-ins) to help weed out the spambots?
Gerry - Friday, October 03 2014 @ 03:10 PM EDT (#294270) #
Basically our technology is old, we haven't kept it updated, and Joe, our tech guru, has real life intruding on his ability to handle a migration, or a CAPTCHA updgrade.

Some of you volunteered to help out but Joe has to take the lead so any timetable starts with him.

Hey andyg35. Get off my lawn!

Understood. The offer to help still stands if/when Joe should have the time. I know all too well the delicate balance between real life and volunteer responsibilities.

I'm really pleased to finally be able to join the conversation after years of daily stalking this site. Great stuff. I've lived in Boston and New York for the last fifteen years. Though I have been surrounded by World Series winners for years, I have never given up on the Jays. Glad to be here. The good folks of Boston and New York have never have much to say when it comes to the Jays, so I appreciate being part of this forum.

Nice to see a wave of new posters. I hadn't been aware that there was a freeze in effect.

Spam, spam, spam. Bloody vikings.

Yeah I didn't know there was such a registration freeze either. Need some more inmates in the asylum.

Wow, I'm finally in! I've been in here reading for a couple/few years, just glad to be officially a part of this. Great stuff.
