Batter's Box Interactive Magazine Batter's Box Interactive Magazine Batter's Box Interactive Magazine
Batter's Box version 3 is very different from its previous incarnation. Most noticeable is that, in order to post comments, you need an account. In this thread, I hope to answer any questions you might have about how to use this new Box.

Accounts

First, and probably most important for most people, is how to create an account. Either select "New user" from the User Functions block in the left-hand navigation bar; alternately, you can click here to create a new user.

On that page, enter your desired username and your e-mail address. It's very important to use your real e-mail address, because a password will be generated and sent to you there. (Without this password, you won't be able to log in.) Once you receive the e-mail, use your username and assigned password to log in.

Changing your password

Because the password you're sent is generated by a computer, it's not very memorable. If you want to change your password to something different that you will remember, click on "Account Information" in the User Functions block in the left-hand navigation bar. Here you'll find a whole set of information you can fill in if you want, including a pasword field. Enter whatever password you want and then click "Save Information" at the bottom of the page.

What if I forget my password?

If you forget your password, don't panic. Enter your username and anything at all into the Password field; alternately, go to the user log-in page. Regardless of the way you arrive there, you should see a "Did you forget your password?" link. Click it, and then enter your e-mail address or username. An e-mail will arrive with instructions on how to re-set your password.

If you don't remember your username, enter your e-mail address. If you don't have access to your e-mail address anymore, please e-mail Joe Drew, who will help you out.

How do I post comments?

Once you're logged in, you will probably (eventually) want to post a comment. If you want to post a new comment to a story, click the "Reply" button below that story (but above its comments.) If you want to reply to a particular comment, click the "Reply to this Comment" link below that comment.

There are two types of comment modes: Plain Text and HTML formatted. If you choose plain text, when you press enter, a linebreak will be put into your comment when it's posted. If you enter any HTML, it will show up as the raw tags. This is different from the way Greymatter worked.

If you choose HTML formatted, your whole comment must be formatted in HTML. That means that, instead of just pressing enter for a line break, you have to enter the HTML to format it. This isn't as hard or imposing as it seems. Here's a brief example:

<p>This is a paragraph. It contains some text, which might be <i>italicized</i> or <b>bolded</b></p><p>This is a second paragraph. It'll have space between it and other paragraphs. This is a linebreak:<br>and it works just like pressing enter.</p>

will be rendered as

This is a paragraph. It contains some text, which might be italicized or bolded

This is a second paragraph. It'll have space between it and other paragraphs. This is a linebreak:
and it works just like pressing enter.

Does this mean no more COMN?

COMN, or Click On My Name, was a common method of posting links when Batter's Box used Greymatter. Using Geeklog, the new software, it's impossible. You now need to enter all links using the HTML code for links. Here is a very brief example:

<a href="http://www.battersbox.ca">Visit Batter's Box!</a>

will be rendered as:

Visit Batter's Box!

Any other questions?

If you have any other questions or problems, please post to this thread. I'll do my best to solve any problems you encounter as soon as I can.

If you can't or don't want to post to this page (for example, because you can't create an account), please e-mail Joe Drew. I'll summarize all common issues as follow-ups to this thread.

Have fun, and enjoy the new features of Batter's Box Version 3!

One thing I forgot to mention was topics.

Every story is now assigned to a topic, even if it's as broad as "Features" or "Breaking News." It's possible to look only at particular topics - for example, Hall of Names - simply by clicking on either a) the Topic link to the left, just above the Hot Topics list; or b) the icon for the topic in question, which is displayed to the right of the story's name. You can go back to viewing "everything" by clicking on the Home link in the Topics list or the Batter's Box banner at the top of the page.

More advanced things are also possible. For example, in your user preferences, you can define topics you don't want to see on the front page. Feel free to explore, because Geeklog gives us a lot more flexibility in categorization of our stories.

Heh, welcome to our first technical problem -- as you may have noticed, the HTML example is broken. Joe will fix it soon.

I'd fix it, but I have no idea how. Ignorance is bliss sometimes.

Magpie - Friday, February 18 2005 @ 11:21 PM EST (#103005) #
Oh and everybody - the phrase COMN is no longer operative.

Thanks for reading the story, Magpie :)

Couple questions Joe:

1. I saw in the preferences section, some thing about a "who's online" feature. Is this just turned off? Will it be turned on? Or maybe it is on, and I just don't see it?

2. I asked this in the other thread, but I should have asked here: No <img> tags allowed?

3. What does the number after the slash mean in the Topics section?

Thanks

Da Box is back!!!

Okay I just realized I'm a huge idiot. For some reason when I put in my username, I typed in ron instead of Ron.

How am I suppose to fix it?
VBF - Saturday, February 19 2005 @ 12:26 AM EST (#103021) #
Great Site. Normally my handle would be "Vernon's Biggest Fan" but unfortunately I too, made a mistake by typing in Vernon's Biggest Fan with a space between each word. Is there any way I could change it too?
Craig B - Saturday, February 19 2005 @ 12:26 AM EST (#103022) #
Ron, I have changed it for you.

Let me know if you have any problems using it.
Ron - Saturday, February 19 2005 @ 12:33 AM EST (#103024) #
Thx!!!
Jonny German - Saturday, February 19 2005 @ 12:33 AM EST (#103025) #
Vern, I can change your handle for you, but there is a 16-character limit. Spaces are fine. Let me know what you would like to change to, by posting or by e-mail.

Thanks Johnny! Just looking at this site reminds me of how info packed its gonna be. You guys out did yourselves.

"Who's Online" is indeed turned off. I just didn't see a place to put it.

I've also enabled img tags for everybody. It's possible to abuse it, but I don't think that'll happen. (If it does, we'll deal with it then.)

While on the whole, I like the new layout, I'll be honest and say that I liked the
previous posting interface better.

I find that when replying to a comment, I'll cut'n'paste various choice
passages while I'm typing. Now, with the new interface, I'm taken to a brand
new page - it would appear that I need to cut the entire comment before
hitting 'reply'.

At the very least, it'd be nice if the 'reply to comment' link would quote the
entirety of that comment in the posting form.

Anyone? Bueller?

Congrats on the new site, but can I make a few constructive criticisms? (I'll wait for a yes answer before saying anything as I don't know how welcome they would be at this time.)
Joe - Saturday, February 19 2005 @ 04:29 AM EST (#103047) #
Please do.

For those people who aren't interested in learning HTML to post links, I have
just learned this very moment that the software we're using will automatically
convert URLs to links. So, all you need to do is to paste in any particular link
in a "Plain Old Text" message, and it'll be automatically linkified.

Like so: http://www.battersbox.ca
Ben - Saturday, February 19 2005 @ 04:40 AM EST (#103049) #
Not to be an ass either but what happened to the link of links? The one that linked every good baseball site out there? I actually have most of them bookmarked myself but there's a few I forget that I'd like to bookmark also. Sorry.
Andrew K - Saturday, February 19 2005 @ 04:44 AM EST (#103050) #
okay, here's a few things I've noticed:

. In the post page it says "use a clear subject that describe what your message is about". But posts don't have a subject on this board.

. I'm not sold on threaded comments. For one thing, because posts don't have subjects it looks rather silly displaying in threaded mode: all the non-root posts have the same "subject" title as the whole thread.

. Are you sure about threaded comments? The way we discuss things here, there are likely to be very deep threads. That tends to either look bad or page widen, on pretty much any way of displaying threads, especially with the font size as large as on this site. And many people will prefer to view flat anyway, just like it was before. I'm not sure that the benefits outweigh the added complexity (visual and logical) of threads.

. In flat display mode, the "reply" and "report abuse" links are pretty obtrusive. Could you consider having them in a smaller font? If lots of people make short posts the signal-to-clutter ratio gets quite low. It's also a bit sad that "abuse" appears so many times on the page...

. I agree with whoever it was that it would be so much nicer to have the comments box at the bottom of the thread. For example, while typing this comment I can't go back and look up who it was who said this first, because I'd risk losing the text of my comment when pressing the "back" button.

(At least it would help to have the main reply button at the bottom of the thread, not the top, where you are likely to be if you want to post a new one.)

. This is none of my business, but is this site blue or green? I guess that the design will bed down a bit over the next few weeks anyway. I must admit I miss the maple leaf stamped shinguard or whatever it was which was the center of the old logo; it looked extremely cool. And, like the Jays, we seem to have lost the Canadian emphasis. I'm not even Canadian, but I think that's a real shame.

. I'm not sure about letting people email through the web interface. I see why you want it, but if I had known that giving you my email address would make it possible for anyone registered here to email me, I would have thought twice about giving out my real, main, email address. At least you should make it clear that this will happen (perhaps you already did, but I didn't notice much about emails beyond the promise not to give it out). Like a lot of people I don't give out my email address lightly.

Sorry to be picky; I hope you take this in the constructive spirit I intend it. At 9am on a Saturday I'm not at my most eloquent so pleae ignore any tetchiness on my part.
Joe - Saturday, February 19 2005 @ 05:16 AM EST (#103052) #

Threaded mode: Is an option. I've made the default flat mode for everyone because that's the way that seems to engender the most conversation. You can do what you want if you want to do it, but I think most people will want to stick with flat mode. (And I did need to be convinced of this.)

Email: Click on Preferences in the User Functions box on the left. There are several privacy settings which you can change to your own personal comfort level. You can make it so nobody will be able to e-mail you if you don't want them to.

Reply text: point taken. I've made the text smaller.

This is none of my business, but is this site blue or green? ... I must admit I miss the maple leaf

No offence, but if you're already confused about the colours I don't think a red maple leaf will help you. Frankly, I don't think we need a maple leaf. The Toronto Star doesn't have a maple leaf and not once have I confused it for a newspaper from any other country.

The maple leaf is often used as nothing more than a quick Canadianization of something that is already multinational or American, to make it appear Canadian. See the maple leaf for McDonalds Canada, Wendy's Canada, etc. I really don't think we need a maple leaf to show this site is Canadian.

Also they ask..."Remember me for" follwed by some times...not sure what this means? Personally, I don't ever want to be forgotten!

Studes - RSS feed... yes, there is one. At least, my Live Bookmark in Firefox (which uses RSS) works fine.

Myleg and KT - A "PGP Key" is a public key for PGP which allows people to send you encrypted e-mail. Don't worry about it, it isn't important.

I think it's worth noting that in the "Preferences" area of each user's login page, the default for total number of comments limited to appear is 100. Since it has not been uncommon for a thread on Batter's Box to crack the 300 barrier, should we re-set that, or leave that up to individuals? Will they know, say from the parenthtetical toal on the left nav, that there are more than 100?
Joe - Saturday, February 19 2005 @ 01:18 PM EST (#103096) #
I promised myself I wouldn't do any Batter's Box work today...

...but, anyways.

I set the default comment limit (which I believe simply paginates the page after it reaches the comment limit) to 1000 in the configuration file, but for some reason the preferences code didn't use that value. I've fixed that now, setting the default to 1000, and changed the few people who'd been affected by it.

"Remember me for" is exactly as it's described on that page: "How long should we remember you after logging in?" That is, after that length of time you'll need to log in again.

I would personally like to have a "Reply" button (or box) at the bottom of the page like the old site, because otherwise I would just click "reply to this comment" even if I wasn't replying to the actual comment, just like I am doing above. And since none of my comments EVER have anything to do with what other people are saying this affects me a lot! Well actually it makes me affect other people.

Otherwise the site is very cool.

I find that everytime I come to this site I have to refresh a number of times before seeing new threads in the "Hot Topics" section on the left.

Also, when I go to a thread, I constantly have to hit refresh to see posts.  Doesn't matter how many times I go to the thread, it'll always display the number of posts it displayed when I first went to the thread.  Is there something wrong with my browser/settings?

Thanks for any help
