NOTES

Max Scherzer was the Buffalo starter. He went 4.1 innings and was charged with two runs. Anders Tolhurst pitched in relief.

The Bisons scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth for a walk off win. Will Wanger was back from rehab and he doubled in the tying run. Riley Tirotta singled in the winning run with an infield high chopper. Five Bisons had two hits. Wagner, Tirotta, Michael Stefanic, Joey Loperfido and Phil Clarke who hit his first AAA HR of the season. It was his first appearance in a week. Orelvis was 0-2 to continue his hitless streak.

Grant Rogers started for NH. He got the first two outs but then the Phils had five straight hits, the last one being a home run, and the Cats were down 5-0. Grant Rogers hung in for four innings.

NH had six hits. Their own run came from a Robert Brooks home run.

Vancouver are pushing for a first half division win and a guaranteed payoff spot. The first half ends mid next week. Their 15-0 win certainly helped. Every starter had a hit and six of them had a multi hit game. Arjun Nimmala, who has been struggling, went 2-4 with two walks. Victor Arias led the way with three hits while professional hitter Jackson Hornung had two. I could see Hornung getting a promotion once the first half ends.

Chris McElvain, coming back from injury, pitched four shutout innings.

The first Dunedin game was a continuation of yesterdays game that was rained out in the first inning. Both teams had just four hits in the seven inning game. Tucker Toman had two hits and an RBI. Alexis Hernandez drove in two with a single. Kendry Rojas was limited to one inning yesterday, Austin Cates threw four innings today with one run conceded.

Landen Maroudis started game two, his first appearance at this level after his surgery. He went four hitless, shutout innings, two walks and three K's. Maroudis and Gilberto Batista combined on a two hitter. The Jays only run came when Manuel Beltre singled in Sam Shaw. Beltre and Shaw had two hits each, four total out of the Jays five hits.

The FCL Jays scored three in the bottom of the seventh for a walk off win. They did it without a hit, a lead off walk was followed by three Yankee errors. Brandon Barriera started but had trouble throwing strikes.

Boy, wonder what Buffalo's ideal lineup is at this point? (age OPS)
  • C: Clarke & Sanchez (both vets)
  • 1B: Rainer Nunez (24 - 750)
  • 2B: Orelvis Martinez (23 - 704)
  • 3B: Riley Tirotta (26 - 851)
  • SS: Michael Stefanic (29 - 866)
  • LF: Yohendrick Pinango (23 - 769)
  • CF: Joey Loperfido (26 - 783)
  • RF: RJ Schreck (24 - 1090)
  • DH: Damiano Palmegiani (25 - 554)
  • IL: Leo Jimenez (SS 24)
  • Just off IL: Will Wagner (IF 26)
Quite the challenge there - DH is very weak if they use Palmegiani, have to figure he is close to being released - being used at 1B/DH/3B/LF so I doubt he is a high level fielder (with a 554 OPS you'd need to be). Pinango might go back to AA if he keeps his low Avg/OBP - 184/295/474 - but I suspect he'll be kept in AAA until a wave of guys from the majors comes down (2 OF must head down when Varsho & Santander return). I wonder if the Jays are close to dealing Orelvis as part of a package if they can get a solid starter in return (ie: the other team still sees his potential) - better to trade too soon than hold on too long (Austin Martin was a great example of dumping just in time, but in 9 games he has hit 438/538/469 in AAA - 7 BB vs 2 SO after flopping last year in the bigs 89 OPS+ -1.0 bWAR). Nate Pearson is an example of holding on too long (he sucked in 8 2/3 IP for the Cubs, 2 HR 10 R, 7 BB 5 SO, now in AAA at 28). Both of those are far more common than trading too soon (Noah Syndergaard).

Orelvis has probably already lost much of his trade value, between his PED suspension, his weak performance this year, and his lack of defensive value.

Nimmala has slowed down a bit in June so far but Arias and Coffey are both very good in June. All 3 are young. They could get promoted to AA fairly soon.
