NOTES

Adam Macko made his second start since rehab and this second one didn't go as well as the first one. He was a little wild, he walked four hitters in three innings. He used 66 pitches, 38 strikes and 28 balls. He did strike out four as well. So not all bad but not great.

Leo Jimenez played his first game since May 30th. He was the DH. Orelvis Martinez had his first hit since June 5th. It was one of three hits for Buffalo in the game.

For NH, Ryan McCarty, recently back from AAA, had three hits, all doubles. Charles McAdoo hit his fourth home run, a three run shot. Due to rain the game was called after six innings.

Ryan Watson pitched like Adam Macko, too wild, he had three walks and used 82 pitches in five innings. He was charged with four runs.

Fernando Perez went six innings for Vancouver. He used 76 pitches, 58 strikes and just 18 balls. He was definitely pounding the strike zone. He just gave up one run with five K's. For the season he has thrown 52.2 innings. His WHIP is 1.31, he has 41 K's and 15 walks. His April was not great so his numbers for May and June look better. His WHIP is 1.15 and he just walked 8 in 41.2 innings. But the K's are still a little light at 33.

On the hitting side Jackson Hornung homered. Arjun Nimmala tripled and singled. Cutter Coffey and Aaron Parker had two hits each.

The Dunedin game went to extra innings. The D Jays tied the game in the eighth inning when Tucker Toman homered. It was his second hit of the game. Alexis Hernandez added another home run to tie the game again in the eleventh inning before Edward Duran singled in the winning run. It was his third hit of the game.

Silvano Hechavarria is settling in well in A ball. He struck out five in 4.1 innings.

The FCL Jays and the FCL Phillies each had three hits but the Jays lost 6-1. The Jays helped by walking eight Phillies.

Nice - the team in 2nd is either 1 or 2 behind after tonight - and they are losing 1-0 in the 2nd. Dunedin is 3 games out. FCL Jays are 1 1/2 out. New Hampshire though is 14 1/2 out (ugh), while Buffalo is 16 games out. Yikes. Why is this? Lets take a quick look
  • 16 out: Buffalo: #11 in OPS 753 (811 leads), 14th in ERA 5.10 (3.36 leads).
  • 14 1/2 out: New Hampshire: 6th in OPS 687 (769 leads), 7th in ERA 4.00 (2.97 leads)
  • 1st: Vancouver: #2 in OPS 768 (781 leads), #1 in ERA 4.12 (4.60 is next)
  • 3 out: Dunedin: #1 in OPS 751 (726 next), #4 in ERA 3.97 (3.71 leads)
  • 1st: FCL Jays: #12 in OPS 672 (782 leads), #4 in ERA 4.16 (3.31 leads)
  • 5 games out (after 10 games) DSL Red: #12 4.24 ERA (2.04 leads), #42 in OPS 655 (957 leads)
  • 6 1/2 games out (dead last) DSL Blue: #21 4.45 ERA, #46 in OPS 625
Wow, do the DSL teams suck right now. Clearly Buffalo needs pitching (no shock, anyone who can pitch is being called up).

Vancouver has not only won 9 in a row, but they've won every game in that stretch by *at least* three runs. They're on a 17-2 run and now lead the division in a tight race. The team now has a .365 OBP.

The Jays loaded up on AA/AAA players at the trade deadline last year which means the majority of Vancouver's players are repeating the level. Good for the affiliate, not so good for player development.

The Jays also have a very small roster on the FCL team, which is suboptimal and means few to no promotion opportunities to move players up to Dunedin and Dunedin up to Vancouver.

Having seen Nimmala a couple of times recently I think the “pushing him to AA” this year train might need to slow down a touch. He’s a fabulous prospect but his strike zone control and, more importantly, swing decisions are being tested right now. Maybe he’ll course correct again but I’d have zero issues if he continues to work on them in Vancouver this year. He’s only 19 after all.

Is there reason to care about “majority of players”? Most guys at every level are just filling roster spots. What matters is the actual prospects. And Vancouver does not have important prospects repeating the level.

Going off of the June top 30 from Baseball America, here’s how many games the prospects at Vancouver played in High A in 2024:

#1 Arjun Nimmala 0
#2 Trey Yesavage 0 (already passed through - any guesses who said in April that Yesavage wouldn’t move quickly?)
#4 Khal Stephen 0
#12 Juaron Watts-Brown 9 (already passed though)
#15 Gage Stanifer 0
#20 Fernando Perez 0
#21 Victor Arias 11
#28 Sean Keys 0

I said in April that Yesavage wasn't as advanced as it seemed (due to 18/19 year old hitters swinging wildly at pitches way outside the strike zone) and his approach would be tested when he got to AA. He improved in May but I still maintain that AA will be a good test... he hasn't really used a third pitch yet.
