The affiliates won three of the four games completed on Monday with one game suspended due to rain.

Lehigh Valley 2 Buffalo 0 (Mid-4th Suspended - Rain)

Allentown, PA -
This game will resume later today as part of a doubleheader. The Phillies affiliate got to Felix Doubront for two runs on three hits and two walks in three innings with a trio of stolen bases factoring in. He struck out four for a Game Score of 47. Andy Burns had the lone hit. Matt Hague and Jonathan Diaz have one walk apiece.

New Hampshire 8 Erie 1

Erie, PA
- The Fisher Cats put five runs in the first two innings to run away with this one. A K.C. Hobson sacrifice fly resulted in the first run of the game before New Hampshire erupted for four runs in the second. An error led to the first two runs while a Devon Travis sacrifice fly and a Dalton Pompey single accounted for the other two. Hobson singled home another run in the sixth and pulled off the back end of a double steal that saw Jon Berti scamper home in the seventh. Hobson would then score on a Dwight Smith Jr. RBI single. Hobson, Smith and Pompey had two hits each with Pompey drawing a base on balls and stealing a base. Berti was on base three times with a double and two walks. Jack Murphy singled and walked. Matt Newman had a base hit and Shane Opitz walked. Jorge Flores was hit by a pitch after pinch-hitting for Travis, who was 0-for-3.

Casey Lawrence (5-7, 5.68) pitched 7-1/3 innings and surrended just an unearned run after an error by Travis at second. Lawrence scattered nine hits and a walk and struck out two for a Game Score of 59. Greg Burke got the final five outs by stranding two runner and allowing just a hit with three strikeouts over 1-2/3 innings.

Palm Beach 2 Dunedin 1

Palm Beach, FL
- Jeremy Gabryszwski (3-5, 3.98) came out on the short end of a pitching duel against Luke Weaver, the Cardinals first round pick of 2014. Gabby gave up two runs on just three hits over seven frames with a 3-0 K/BB total and 10 of his 16 outs in play remained on the diamond. His Game Score was 68. Alonzo Gonzalez allowed one hit and struck out a pair in a scoreless eighth inning.

The D-Jays scored their only run in the seventh when Ian Parmley doubled home Mitch Nay after a one-out single. Matt Dean had the other base hit. Parmley and Christian Lopes were the only ones to work the count to ball four. Lopes and Dawel Lugo both struck out three times. Roemon Fields and J.D. Davis were both 0-for-4 but Fields doubled up a runner at first base from center field. Dickie Joe Thon and Jorge Saez came up empty in their three at-bats.

Lansing 8 Cedar Rapids 2

Cedar Rapids, IA
- The Lugnuts are back to 10 games over .500 after beating the Twins affiliate in an afternoon game. Ryan McBroom drew a leadoff walk in the second inning and trotted home on a Jason Leblebijian home run to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. McBroom's sacrifice fly and a Josh Almonte ground out highlighted a three-run third. An Almonte base hit and a Michael De La Cruz fielder's choice sparked another three-run inning in the seventh. Leblebijian was a triple short of the cycle in a 3-for-5 day at the dish. Almonte, Rowdy Tellez and Tim Locastro had two hits apiece but Locastro was caught stealing. Chris Carlson reached base three different ways via a single, a walk and a hit by pitch. Carlson stole second after being plunked but was caught trying to pilfer third. McBroom walked to get on base twice. Richard Urena had a single and Anthony Alford drew a walk.

Conner Greene
(6-2, 4.31) kept the Kernels from popping by limiting them to a solo home run among four hits over six innings. The Californian righty did keep the ball on the ground for the most part with nine of his 11 outs in play on the grass. He walked a pair but struck out three for a Game Score of 61. Tim Mayza gave up the other run, which was unearned on a De La Cruz passed ball, on a hit and three walks over 1-1/3 innings but he struck out one. Mark Biggs stranded two of three runners and pitched 1-2/3 innings of scoreless, one-hit ball that included one strikeout.

DSL Blue Jays 7 DSL White Sox 1

San Pedro de Macoris, DR
- The Jays took advantage of six White Sox errors to improve their record to 8-6. Norberto Obeso doubled in the first run and Yorman Rodriguez tripled home two more in the third inning. The Jays got two more runs in the fourth on a wild pitch and a catcher's interference call. A Jesus Navarro RBI single and an error produced two more runs in the seventh. Obeso, Manuel Heraza and Sam Buelens all had two-hit games with Obeso drawing a walk. Jesus Severino also reached base three times with a single and two walks. Navarro got aboard twice by earning a base on balls. Rodriguez had the lone stolen base. Kevin Vicuna and Emanuel Moreta were hit by pitches.

Juan Nunez
started things off with three scoreless innings on two hits, two walks and a plunk while striking out three. Yensy Diaz (1-1) yielded an unearned run (as the result of a Severino error at short) on just a hit and a walk but struck out four over four innings. Only a walk blemished Jose Acosta's two shutout innings of work.

Thanks for the link round-up.

According to the Roanoke News-Herald, Toronto is the capital of Canada. That will be news to Tyler Burden when he steps onto the mound at the Rogers Centre "in a year or so".

If we wanted to be charitable, technically, Toronto is a "Canadian Capital City", which is what the article says.

Justin Maese, next to Jon Harris, has been the most widely praised pick the Jays drafted. Therefore it surprised me (and the MLBTR guy as well) that he signed for a massively under slot $300K. My first thought was "what was his agent thinking?". That was a huge discount for a HS kid with his talent and a huge coup for the Jays, freeing up a lot of money to go overslot on their other HS picks.

Most interesting comment in the Justin Maese article: "Several scouts attended Maese's games this season"(Thanks for the link JB)

This is in line with what I'd heard earlier, that El Paso somewhat seems to be the Texas equivalent of Moosonee here in Ontario, and only 4 teams scouted him heavily.

Just speculating, but I think the $ amount was predetermined, with the Jays scout asking him predraft what he wanted if he was picked. Maese could have asked for more, but because so few teams were on him, he could easily have been overlooked and dropped compared to kids in the intensively scouted schools such as those in the Houston or Dallas/Fort Worth areas.

Reminds me a bit of 2010, when the jays shocked a lot of baseball folk by inking both Sanchez and Syndergaard for under $1.5 million combined.

Sano - Tuesday, June 16 2015 @ 11:46 AM EDT (#302926) #
I don't know how the Jays scouts organize their regions, but I really hope that the scout who found Syndergaard is the same guy who was in on Maese. A lot of the talk around him seems to have similar overtones (late bloomer with big FB/developing breaking stuff, not heavily scouted, etc).

That being said, I checked the map - Mansfield (Syndergaard's hometown) and El Paso are approx 8 hours drive from one another. Probably not the same scout I imagine.
85bluejay - Tuesday, June 16 2015 @ 01:15 PM EDT (#302942) #
FWIW - Someone asked about Boyd in Fangraphs prospect chat & Kiley McDaniel mentioned that he had spoken to a scout who was impressed with the improvement in Boyd's repertoire, both his FB velocity & off-speed stuff.
hypobole - Tuesday, June 16 2015 @ 02:18 PM EDT (#302952) #
Further to what 85 bluejay mentioned, here is Kileys full response in the FanGraphs chat:

"Just talked to a scout that saw him a few weeks back. His velo jumped this year from 88-92 t94 to 91-94 t96 and the solid average off-speed is now above average, sometimes flashing better. He signed for 75K as a senior from Oregon State who had his velo bump as a senior, then again two years later. Basically unprecedented as far as I know. He’s at least a high 45 FV now, probably closer to 50 FV. When the scout was telling me what he saw, I made him repeat everything because it was so hard to believe."

BTW, the person who asked the question confused Boyd with Taylor Cole re: Mormon mission.

Boyd and Graveman have become the 2 most shockingly great success stories in the past few Jays drafts, probably any teams draft over that time. I can almost imagine JPR sidling up to AA this week with a "So who was right about drafting low ceiling college guys?"
Spifficus - Tuesday, June 16 2015 @ 02:27 PM EDT (#302953) #
I imagine AA's answer would be "I don't know, but that was quite the start by Syndergaard last night. Also, you're welcome."

[Regarding trading Bud Norris]

7/19/2013
[Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos] texted [Luhnow] and asked what it would take for Norris. AA said Aaron Sanchez is off the table but might be willing to talk about anyone else.
7/20/2013
[Luhnow] told [Alex Anthopoulos] that we would consider Stroman +. AA said he had a bunch of balls in the air at once but would get back to JL.

10/18/2013
TOR reached out on Jason Catro. They said their No. 1 priority this off season is to upgrade over Arrencibia. They want to get a sense for what the price would be on Castro.

11/13/2013
[Alex Anthopoulos] said Lawrie was untouchable. Sounded like they might consider a smaller deal for Stroman but later in off season.

OK, Spiffi, let's play.

JPR retorts. "Syndergaard got you Dickey, Graveman got you Donaldson. Just saying. And yes, thank you."
Spifficus - Tuesday, June 16 2015 @ 04:10 PM EDT (#302960) #
AA pauses for a moment, wondering if his old boss had really become senile enough to think that Graveman was a front-line piece in that trade. On the off-chance he was serious, Alex proposes, "Jeez, if that's the case, JP, Boyd has to be worth DeGromm. What do you say?"
hypobole - Tuesday, June 16 2015 @ 04:39 PM EDT (#302963) #
JPR to AA "Can't give up one of my college guys, but knowing how much you like your high school arms, Jon Niese for Boyd might work."
Spifficus - Tuesday, June 16 2015 @ 04:53 PM EDT (#302964) #
AA looks at his half-empty orange juice for a moment before reaching into his pocket. After he pours the vodka he took from the mini-bar into the OJ, he leans back, puts his feet up on the chair in front of him and says, "Sorry, I can't, JP. I have some more pressing matters to attend to."

Blue Jays sign their 1st Round pick, seven others of their top ten, plus 22 of the remaining 30 Draft picks in an astonishing record 5 days and it's not significant on this site. I guess those interested in such things have left this site for other ones. It's a loss for sure.

It's too bad there's too much content posted here to be able to keep up, makes sense why some would leave for bluer pastures.

In all seriousness, I like that there aren't 50 threads posted a day, the posters/discussions make this site great IMO.

There are other sites that try to do a good job:

http://www.bluebirdbanter.com/2015/6/10/8755563/2015-draft-signing-table
I just thought it would merit more discussion. This post has the most discussion about it than anywhere else on this site. And no one is saying much, which might say something about this year's Draft in itself.

Richard SS, This is my favorite Blue Jays site. I too wait for Bauxites to talk about my favorite topic of the moment. Some times it takes a while.
I am OK with an 11 game win streak overshadowing all else. Unless I have nothing to do and then I crave discussion on what else is happening in Jays land.

A lot has happened this month. Mostly good, and the Bauxites have responded favorably. Actually just to the win streak.

I miss the input of Lugnut fan and Mamboon. I hope Nigel can contribute C's info. However personal life has its priorities thrust on each of us. With 7 minor league teams to cover the workload just increased.

By the way thanks to the contributors.

Since I understand this situation better than most Bauxites because I have had my share of difficulties I think we should skip the AS break and the July 31 trade deadline topics so as to have a breather. No rumors just discussion on actual trades.

In the off season when things slow down, would be a good time to catch up.

Gerry - Tuesday, June 16 2015 @ 09:22 PM EDT (#302980) #
If you followed the draft this year you knew that the experts considered it to be a weak year. As a result the comments before the draft suggested that if any high draft pick tried to hold out for more money then the team was likely to say no and take the replacement pick next year. So this year there has been a lot of early signings and no hold outs as far as I know.

If you look at the players the Jays signed the vast majority of them were college players. I hadn't noticed that the Jays selected so many college players. It's not unusual for teams to sign most of their college picks, those players only option is to go back for a fourth year of college. The most interesting signing was third rounder Justin Maese who seems to have signed for way under slot.

Getting on a roll here, I think a lot of the writing around the draft is overblown. The Jays were considered winners because Jon Harris lasted until the Jays picked. Well that meant twenty something other teams passed on him. Keith Law thinks its a good pick but 25 teams don't agree. A good draft means the Jays got a player whose stock dropped, well why did it drop? Is that really a steal?

We all know the draft is very uncertain. How can you declare winners and losers when it takes a couple of years to figure it out? Ricky Romero, Travis Snider and JP Arencibia were all thought to be decent picks at the time. Did anyone say, the Jays picked Dalton Pompey or Kevin Pillar in the mid rounds, thats a good pick. Basically there is a lot of opinions around the draft and many of those opinions mean nothing.

End rant.

Gerry, I did say Boyd and Graveman were terrific picks in the 2013 draft. Admittedly, it was earlier today I said it, but that still counts in the analysis department, no?
Richard S.S. - Tuesday, June 16 2015 @ 10:41 PM EDT (#302988) #
All right. Thank you everyone. I'm a Blue Jay Fanatic from the beginning and a strong Baseball Fan as well. I follow the Raptors because they are Canada's only NBA team, but I'm not much of a Basketball fan. And I've followed the Oilers since forever because I want to suffer, but I'm not that good a Hockey fan. But as some of you might have noticed, my Oiler world has changed forever, and I got sidetracked.

As for this being a weak draft, that not truly descriptive of the Draft. Lack of Talent that fits at the top of the Draft is what makes it weak. Third round and on is basically the same every year.

hypobole - Wednesday, June 17 2015 @ 09:01 AM EDT (#303002) #
In all seriousness, Gerry I have to disagree somewhat. Players can drop even though their talent level indicates they should go higher, even by some teams that passed on them.

Bonus demands/signability have always caused players to be drafted lower than their talent level.

Team strategy now plays a big part. I pick 20th lets say, and I can get the 35th rated player on my board for 60th slot money, money I can use on a player who dropped only for monetary reasons in a later round. Together, my picks will yield greater value in my estimation than simply choosing the BPA. Angels seem to have used this strategy this year.

Some players have unique skills. I pick 20th, and my 19th true talent player, the highest rated pitcher on my board is available, as is my 30th true talent player,a hitter with immense raw power. However, my board is littered with pitchers and the drop off from 19 to 100 is not that much. So I can take pitchers not much worse in later rounds. But if I pass on my power hitter, he'll be gone almost assuredly by the time I pick next and there is no chance I'll be able to pick a player anywhere close to his ability later.

And there is the "Hayden Simpson" scenario where a GM fixates on a player for reasons no one else in the industry can fathom.

So yeah, players like Harris can drop, and be picked a number of spots lower than many in the industry believe they should have gone.

On the other hand you're right that judging draft picks so quickly is a premature exercise to say the least (though that's what people want and pundits are paid to do) and it takes a few years or longer to more accurately assess.

I know if Deck McGuire had dropped to 29th in 2010, he would have been considered a "steal" at the time. And we know how that turned out.
bpoz - Wednesday, June 17 2015 @ 09:53 AM EDT (#303011) #
IMO the analyzing on our high picks is well done by Gerry & Hypobole. We all know and both have said that it is all speculation at this time.
One difference, which is also a fact is that Jon Harris is healthy & signed so we will have data soon.
It is possible that Hoffman and Harris could be teammates next year in AA, but that is a long shot.
PeterG - Wednesday, June 17 2015 @ 04:34 PM EDT (#303051) #
not that much of a long shot...at some point during the season.
