The final Vancouver Canadians photo thread of 2015.

Case-y at the Bat! Andrew Case with fellow reliever Michael Kraft during the September 6 pre-game warmup against Everett at Nat Bailey Stadium.

In the year-end tradition, the players sing O Canada before the final home game of the season. Toronto's Connor Panas is flanked by Saint John, New Brunswick's Andrew Case and Ajax, Ontario's Sean Ratcliffe.

Connor Panas rocks one over the right field wall to put Vancouver on the board in the first inning.

Rodrigo Orozco steals second base after drawing a walk in the second inning.

Andrew Guillotte nearly overslides the second base bag but manages to hold on for a stolen base in the third.

Gabriel Cenas is about to step on home plate after clubbing a three-run home run in the eighth inning to make it 11-0 Vancouver. Rodrigo Orozco and Kevin Garcia wait to greet Cenas.

The Canadians announce their record-setting attendance mark of 2015.

Monty the Mountie says thanks to the fans!

And so do the players! Ryan Metzler - who had a home run in the season finale - leads the salute.

Kevin Garcia takes one last moment to reflect on the 2015 season.

Hope you enjoyed the photos this year. More to come in 2016! Happy New Year, Bauxites!!

I did enjoy the photos #2. Thanks for posting them.

Seconded.  The coverage of the Canadians here is great.  I wonder if we might get to see Vlad the Impaler 2 next year.

John Sickels is out with his top 20 Blue Jays.

The top ten has the same ten names as both Da Box and Baseball America. Somehow it worries me when everyone is aligned. It could mean that there aren't guys in the 11-20 range that anyone believes should be in the top ten. That doesn't seem good to me.

Although I understand why he has graded the prospects the way he has, some of Sickels' grades seem a little low to me. He admits Alford's grade is conservative and that he may wind up as a B+.

That's a good point Gerry makes about the alignment of lists potentially being an indicator that nobody thinks any of the other names merit Top 10 consideration. This is obviously a little different if the team has an exceptionally strong farm system with names like Bryant, Schwarber, Russell and Soler at the top, but for a middle of the pack, at best, farm system, the uniformity of the lists is a little troubling to me as well.

I agree with Sickels' ranking of Tellez as the #2 prospect in the system behind Alford.

I haven't seen either Reid-Foley or Perdomo pitch, and I know that Reid-Foley is younger and at a higher developmental level, but I am not so sure that he is a better prospect.  Here's a scouting report on Perdomo.  Do any of our C's watchers have observations about Perdomo- deception and movement on the change, for instance?

Those Sickels rankings are interesting - he's one of the best minor league reporters out there.  A few takeaways
  • He's conservative on Alford due to the small sample size, but says he may end up a B+ (Sickels rarely gives As)
  • Urena's range is already declining at SS
  • Sean RF's command / polish issues make him hard to project
  • He sees a little of Aaron Sanchez / Thor in Justin Maese
  • He's lower than the Box on Fields, Thomas and Jansen, and makes no mention at all of Matt Smoral
  • He's higher on Perdomo, Nay, Dean and Taylor Cole, surprisingly.
  • Sees rule v guy Biagini as our 20th prospect
  • "Trades and graduations have put this system into a downphase but much of their talent is very young and could improve quickly."

Happy new years everyone, and thanks for the great pics of the Canadians!

I think those grades are fair. Guys like Alford have a chance to be rated higher down the road, but the conservative approach at this point is more sensible for players in the lower minors.

Sickels is definitely my favorite prospects guy.

How can your range even decline at 19 unless you are playing injured or suffered a major career threatening injury, gained a lot of weight or muscle mass in the wrong places, or just flat out suck?
jerjapan - Thursday, December 31 2015 @ 04:12 PM EST (#317573) #
CeeBee, I was surprised to read that about Urena's range too, but I assume it's because he is growing too large for SS - it's been speculated for a while that he might do that.
Mike Green - Thursday, December 31 2015 @ 04:19 PM EST (#317575) #
A year and a half ago, what I heard was that Lugo would likely have to move off the position but that Urena was likely to be able to remain a shortstop.  Maybe Lugnut Fan has some direct observations of him.

This organization decided not to move Shortstops off their position unless they became a huge liability. Shortstops have better trade value than all other position players. One of the decisions of early 2014, I think.
jerjapan - Thursday, December 31 2015 @ 05:56 PM EST (#317578) #
Richard, that sounds consistent with the decision to try Vlad Jr. at 3B ... and maybe even with keeping Pentacost at catcher if possible.

I'd also love to hear if people think Urena can stick at SS.

Cal Ripken was a Legend at Shortstop. He had a good, but not great range, and a strong and accurate throwing arm. What made him a Legend was his ability to position himself in the right spot for each and every pitch. This is almost a forgotten technique.

Urena has a good and accurate arm, and knows how to play his position well. Did concentrating on his power detract on his Defense? Better positioning should keep him at Shortstop. Don't forget, he's only 19.
