Is it pedigree or hubris that's preventing the Jays development people from shipping Logan Warmoth to Lansing?
PeterG - Tuesday, August 07 2018 @ 10:47 AM EDT (#363400) #
No point really. Just start him at Dunedin again next year. What we should be asking is why Brock Lundquist is not being moved up to NH.

Groshans is back in the lineup today and was hit by a pitch in his first at-bat.

I can understand why the Jays' player development people don't want to give promotions after fairly short stays at a level, and Lundquist has only been in Dunedin for a month; and while he was good in Lansing, he didn't have nearly the performance that he's put together in Dunedin, which has been greatly helped by a babip over .400.

Cal Stevenson, on the other hand, is so overmatching the competition in Bluefield with a nearly 1:3 K to BB ratio that he almost certainly should be promoted - probably to Lansing.
hypobole - Tuesday, August 07 2018 @ 01:23 PM EDT (#363410) #
Yeah, there are a few real promotion questions. Why Patrick Murphy is still in Dunedin is another one.

As for Lundquist, what's odd is WHEN he was promoted to Dunedin. He had a great May, mediocre June and a poor start to July then promoted.

Promotions are always a crap shoot to guess.  I suspect teams are looking at underlying stuff we don't see - what percent of balls are hit hard, vs what pitchers - is he beating up guys who are doing poorly but being killed by those who are probably major leaguers or the reverse?

Checking crazy stats in the system for pitchers....
RH starters...
  • Murray, Joey: 0 ERA, 16 IP (4 starts, 4 relief), 9 H 8 BB, 23 SO OPS against of 462 21 years old in Vancouver.
  • Watson, Troy: 1.29 ERA 21 IP (4 starts, 5 relief) 7 H 6 BB 15 SO 342 OPS against 21 years old in Bluefield
  • Govea, Ronald: 1.38 ERA 39 IP (9 starts, 1 relief) 29 H 11 BB 27 SO 543 OPS against 17 years old in Dominican summer league
  • Estrada, Lazaro: 2.21 ERA 53 IP (11 starts), 38 H 11 BB 62 SO 526 OPS against 19 years old in Dominican summer league
  • Pardinho, Eric: 3.27 ERA 33 IP (8 starts) 29 H 12 BB 45 SO 17 years old in Bluefield
LH starters...
  • no ERA's sub 2.50, but a couple of 10K per 9 IP guys
  • Hernandez, Adrian: 2.63 ERA 41 IP (5 start, 5 relief) 34 H 15 BB 49 SO 18 years old in the Dominican Summer League
  • Perdomo, Angel: 3.63 ERA 67 IP (12 start, 6 relief) 60 H 23 BB 80 SO 24 years old in Dunedin
RH relievers (10+ IP minimum) sub 1 ERA or 12+ K/9 IP
  • Wilson, Brad: 0.95 ERA 19 IP 8 H 5 BB 19 SO 21 years old in Bluefield
  • Brito, Jose: 5.27 ERA 13 2/3 IP 16 BB 21 SO 8 wild pitches but somehow no HBP - AKA Nuke Laloosh - no sane person wants to face him or catch him. DSL
  • Watts, Justin: 21 IP 17 H 8 BB 30 SO - 24 in Vancouver so not a real prospect but nice K's.
  • McAffer, Will: 18 1/3 IP 17 H 11 BB 26 SO 21 years old in Vancouver
LH relievers
  • Reyes, Marcus: 0.71 ERA in 25 1/3 IP 23 H 4 BB 22 SO 23 years old in Vancouver not bad for a 38th round pick
  • Bergen, Travis: 0.94 ERA in 47 2/3 IP 37 H 12 BB 64 SO 24 years old split between Dunedin and NH - could be here next year, just 28 2/3 IP before this season over 3 years.
  • Allgeyer, Nick: 2.89 ERA in 18 2/3 IP 13 H 6 BB 25 SO 22 in Vancouver
Interesting pitchers eh?

Groshans is back in the lineup today and was hit by a pitch in his first at-bat.

Groshans was pulled after striking out to end the fifth. He was 0-for-2 with the plunk.

I think that's exactly right John. I recall an exchange on twitter a few years back between Kevin Goldstein and Keith Law where they were agreeing that stats were not determinative in minor league development decisions. From the fan viewpoint, most see nothing other than stats and afford them a greater significance than they have. Toronto's lucky to have both Cherington and Kim on that front and I'm pretty confident in their ability to make sound decision. Speaking of which, both will be addressing STH's at next offseason's winterfest event, so there is the opportunity for lots of interesting questions about players like Lundquist and many others. I hope it's not dragged down by the 'why aren't Vlad and Bo in the majors right now' narrative because questions about players like Lundquist and others could bring insightful answers.

Nice to read that Gurriel is taking infield practice today.

Patrick Murphy pulled after 64 pitches and in the third inning. Pitching badly perhaps, he could have hit a pitch limit in the inning.
Gerry - Tuesday, August 07 2018 @ 08:33 PM EDT (#363430) #
Vladdy 2-2 so far tonight, average up to .375.
Gerry - Tuesday, August 07 2018 @ 08:38 PM EDT (#363432) #
Reports from Dunedin say Murphy was pulled due to a pitch limit and blamed the umpire for not calling anything below the belt a strike. That might be an exaggeration but it does sound like the umpire played a role.
acepinball - Tuesday, August 07 2018 @ 08:41 PM EDT (#363433) #
Another report from the game says that Murphy hit 100 in the bottom of the 3rd.

According to @chiefmac64 he "sat 97-98 most of his outing, hit 99 couple times besides the 100 mph pitch"

In the Eastern League, Bo Bichette leads the league in Runs, Hits, Doubles, Total Bases, and Stolen Bases. Cavan Biggio leads the league in OBP, and is second in OPS and HR.
Shoeless Joe - Tuesday, August 07 2018 @ 09:44 PM EDT (#363440) #
That has to be a hot stadium gun for Patrick Murphy, but I will dream on such reports. Not a good outing, but a great season.

In any other year we would be all amazed at what Biggio and Bichette are doing, but Vlad Jr. just sets the comparison bar too high.

I have been listening to a lot of the around the nest podcast's and the Vancouver announcer Rob Fai seems to think Otto Lopez stands out as a guy with high upside. He could be an interesting sleeper for next season.

Harold Ramirez has had a nice bounce back year - will need a 40 man spot if not traded.

Nice to see catcher Riley Adams heating up especially with Max Pentecost having a terrible season.
