After somewhere around 600 days, minor league baseball is back. All four teams play today. For those of you who haven't been following the minor leagues, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats are the only one of the Jays four teams who will play their home games at their own park. The major league Jays are using the Dunedin park and intend to use the Buffalo park so both of those teams have been bumped, for now. Vancouver have to play in Oregon because the border is closed, again for now.

Today's schedule is as follows:

7pm, Worcester at Buffalo (Trenton)

6pm, New Hampshire at Portland

6.30pm, Dunedin at Tampa

9.30pm, Vancouver at Tri-City

Nate Pearson and Zack Logue are the only starting pitchers to be announced so far.

All teams will play six game series this year, from Tuesday through Sunday. Monday is a universal off-day.

The Bisons have announced their starting lineup. It is:

Forrest Wall; Breyvic Valera; Rowdy Tellez; Tyler White; Josh Palacios; Cullen Large; Kevin Smith; Juan Graterol; Logan Warmoth

Ray and Mueller were signed as minor league free agents in 2020 from Vanderbilt and Baylor respectively. Remember the 2020 draft was drastically shortened.

Also I misspelt Addison Barger...opening day jitters.
Shoeless Joe - Tuesday, May 04 2021 @ 03:17 PM EDT (#397241) #
I think Addison Barger could be a real prospect if the off field issues are resolved.

I looked up Harry Ray, and there wasn’t anything that stood out to me, although playing in the SEC would make his numbers look worse than most UDFA stat lines from weaker conferences.

Is McGuire in Trenton or on the taxi squad in Oakland?
I have heard that Davis is on the taxi squad, perhaps a sign of Springer's health.

Zach Britton was signed as an outfielder, 5th round last summer.
He signed for 97.5K, 136th overall with a slot of 410K, most of the money went to pay Martin.
Interesting to see him catching.

Other possible starters in Trenton are Allgeyer, Manoah, Zeuch and Waguespack.
Joey Murray is still being stretched.

Jackson Rees is the closer. Worth keeping an eye on.
Warmoth and Velera are playing outfield--maybe as possible super utility types.

12 of the pitchers in Dunedin were starters in 2019.
A bunch of tandem starts seems reasonable.

I remember undrafted FA Casey Lawrence making the Jays a few years back, but it seems pretty rare nowadays, And their careers are fleeting.
I guess if any UFA becomes a solid MLB'er in the near future, it will most likely come from the 2020 group.

Got me thinking - who was the best UFA ever? Larry Walker was a UFA, but also an IFA - he was never draft eligible. Bruce Sutter and Kirby Yates were drafted but went back to school and weren't drafted again.

I think I found the answer, actually 2. One guy went from school to Indy ball and was signed from there, the other went straight from school to a pro contact like the guys Gerry mention as Jays signings.

Anyone know or want to guess?

Undrafted free agents.... Hmm... I recall Kevin Mitchell wasn't (checked to confirm), 2 time All-Star, 1 MVP award, had a pretty good career overall. Part of the great class of '86 where tons of really good rookies showed up at once - Barry Bonds, Will Clark, Barry Larkin, Jose Canseco, Wally Joyner, Todd Worrell, John Kruk among others plus Mark Eichhorn for the Jays (157 IP, 1.72 ERA but asked Jimy Williams not to give him the innings in a double header on the final day of the season to win the ERA crown because he thought Roger Clemens was going to win the pitcher triple crown and he didn't want to sneak it away from him, in the end though someone else won the K crown Mark Langston).

No idea who you are thinking of hypobole. I should know but cannot think of who it is - my first few guesses were pre-draft guys or ones who were drafted. Mike Piazza was close (62nd round) but was drafted (the draft ended after 50 rounds not long after).

I think Bobby Bonilla somehow was undrafted.

And we are off.....

Austin Martin singles in his first AB.

Martin singled off the first pitch, the first pitch of his minor league professional career.

You're right on Bobby Bonilla, Gerry, but the 2 I mentioned were even better by both bWAR and fWAR.
scottt - Tuesday, May 04 2021 @ 06:51 PM EDT (#397258) #
From what I heard, Martin and Groshans will alternate at SS.
If Moreno can hit clean up, there's a place waiting for him in Toronto.

Hint - if you're a long time Jays fan, you've seen both, one even in the playoffs.

Nate Pearson with 8 Ks in 3.2 innings and 78 pitches. Ran into trouble in the fourth with a genuine double, a walk and two infield singles, giving up a run and leaving with the bases loaded.

Nonetheless, if he can give us 80ish effective pitches in AAA, I want him pitching for the Jays five days from now.
Gerry - Tuesday, May 04 2021 @ 08:35 PM EDT (#397269) #
Nate Pearson had a mixed start. He threw 3.2 innings and had 8 K's. He gave up four hits but two of those were infield hits.

It took him 78 pitches to get through less than 4 innings. 53 pitches were strikes, leaving 25 balls. That ratio is OK. His problem was that those 53 strikes represent 11 outs and 4 hits. In total he faced 17 hitters so that is over 3 strikes per hitter. Too many foul balls ran up his pitch count.

He was planning on being more efficient, he didn't get there tonight.
BlueJayWay - Tuesday, May 04 2021 @ 08:38 PM EDT (#397270) #
8 of Pearson's 11 outs were via the strikeout, and according to Wagner was clocked at 100mph. So it seems he's healthy. I wonder if they bring him up and start him Sunday in Houston, or they give him another AAA start.
Super Bluto - Tuesday, May 04 2021 @ 08:48 PM EDT (#397271) #
Listening to the radio feed of the Buffalo game except the crew there keeps referring to the Bisons as the "Thunder" who I thought were the Yankees AA affiliate except now it appears that the Yankees are affiliated with something called the Somerset Patriots who were at this time last year, an indy league team and, as far as I know, have no connection to the Patriots football team. It's all a bit confusing.
Gerry - Tuesday, May 04 2021 @ 08:52 PM EDT (#397272) #
Trenton were left without a team after the minor league reorganization.

As I noted in the introduction above, the Bisons are playing their home games in Trenton as the Jays are expected to move to Buffalo soon. When the Bisons play in Trenton they wear Trenton uniforms. When they are on the road they wear Bisons uniforms.

Leonardo Jimenez is on the Dunedin roster but listed as being on the 7 day IL.

Pearson should be an elite 2-3 inning reliever. #free Pearson for take off

greenfrog - Tuesday, May 04 2021 @ 09:16 PM EDT (#397277) #
I see Pearson as a likely reliever as well (1-2 innings at a time would suffice). It will probably take the front office a couple of more injuries before they make that decision.
Gerry - Tuesday, May 04 2021 @ 09:45 PM EDT (#397279) #
Martin, Groshans and Moreno combined tonight:

18 PA
6 hits
4 walks
1 HBP
1 K

Impressive.

Game about to start, so here's the answers.

The straight out of school undrafted player is Danny Darwin. 39.8 bWAR over 21 seasons. His time with the Jays is best forgotten. 7.62 ERA over 13 games in 1995 at the age of 39 until he was released in July.

Tom Candiotti played indy ball for one season after going undrafted. 41.1 bWAR over 16 seasons. In 1991 he and Turner Ward came in a mid-season deal for Denis Boucher, Glenallen Hill and Mark Whiten. He was pretty good until the playoffs. That did not go well.

When the Bisons play in Trenton they wear Trenton uniforms.

So when the Jays play in Buffalo will they wear the Bison uniforms?
