Gabriel Moreno hit a grand slam, New Hampshire was down 10-2 at the time, but a slam is a slam. Buffalo won as Thomas Hatch and Nick Allgeyer pitched well. The C's had excellent pitching from Adrian Hernandez and plenty of hitting and won. Dunedin were rained out.

Buffalo 5 Rochester 2

Hartford 10 New Hampshire 6

Everett 5 Vancouver 9

Clearwater at Dunedin - postponed

This is what I noted from yesterday's games.

Thomas Hatch threw 66 pitches in 3.1 innings as he builds up his arm. Rochester scored one run on four hits in those 3.1 innings. Hatch had only one strikeout but he did get five ground balls. Nick Allgeyer went four innings and he too gave up one run. He had five K's.

Kevin Smith had two hits, including his first triple of the season. Christian Colon and Nash Knight both hit a solo home run.

Johnny Barbato has been pitching well for the Fisher Cats since he signed as a free agent. It was back to reality on Thursday, Barbato was dinged for nine runs on nine hits, ouch!

Jordan Groshans was 0-2 with a walk before being removed. I assume it was because a 10-0 game in the seventh. Groshans is hitting .292 in June with a 796 OPS. That's up from a 673 OPS in May. That is the kind of improvement you like to see in a young player. His strikeouts are virtually halved from May to June, another positive. Yesterday was just the third time in June he has gone hitless in a game.

Samad Taylor also went hitless. Gabriel Moreno had two hits including a grand slam. The slam turned a 10-2 deficit to 10-6, too little, too late. hypobole's favourite, Vinny Capra, picked up another two hits and his average is up to .356.

Adam Kloffenstein has had an up and down season. Thursday was more down, he gave up five runs in four innings on six hits. His problem was that five of the six hits were for extra bases. So he was hit hard. Adrian Hernandez came on in relief and was outstanding, five innings, no hits and nine strikeouts. His ERA is still zero after his promotion from Dunedin. Hernandez does have an excellent change-up that was too much for the hitters.

The C's scored six in the first inning and two more in the second to pull way ahead early. Tanner Kirwer kept up his hot pace with two hits and a walk. One of his hits was his sixth home run. Rafael Lantigua also homered, his first, a two run shot. Cameron Eden drove in two runs with two hits.

Three Stars

Third Star - Cameron Eden

Second Star - Gabriel Moreno

First Star - Adrian Hernandez

I don't know why they don't just use Hatch in the pen. He could go 3 or 4 innings there once every 5 days.
Yeah, in theory  that's what they are doing with Thornton but he barely pitches.

They seem to be committed to the idea that Hatch will turn into a good MLB SP at age 27 even though he's never been a good MILB SP despite always being quite old for his levels.

Hatch was injured in early 2021 and put on the 60 day IL. He pitched a lot in the minors in 2017/18/19. Traded to the Jays at the 2019 traded deadline because we failed to compete.

He did quite well in 2020. Better than Pearson. Both Pearson and Hatch are working towards returning to the ML. Atkins has not said what the plan is for these 2 pitchers. Atkins also is not telling his thoughts for the rest of 2021. Atkins has made moves like adding Allgeyer, Saucedo and Carl Edwards Jr which I consider minor and desperate.

So I just wait and try to understand what is happening. FYI C Edwards Jr has been added to the 60 day IL.

Groshans came out of yesterday's game. In the report above I thought it might have been due to the score. But he is not in today's lineup so maybe he has tweaked something again.

Here's something interesting on Kevin Smith, courtesy PL:

He continues to look like a completely different hitter. He looked more patient and his bat path has changed from my looks in Double-A way back in 2019. It looks like he made an effort to get shorter to the ball, and to avoid chasing in the outer half. This has likely cut down on the misses inside and the chases outside. I’d like to hear from Smith what he changed in particular however.

Leo Jimenez hasn't played since being removed after a HBP Tuesday. Don't know the severity, but at least he hasn't been placed on the 7 day IL yet.

Jimenez is in the lineup for game 2 tonight.

Is Logue gaining a bit of prospect status? He had a great start today, and his season numbers are strong.
