The Bisons were the only winners on Sunday. Logan Warmoth's three run home run was enough for the win. Two starters pitched well but the bullpen couldn't hold it. Hayden Juenger and Nick Frasso were good. Orelvis seems to be back on track with two more hits including a home run.

St. Paul 1 Buffalo 2

Altoona 9 New Hampshire 6

Vancouver 3 Hillsboro 8

Bradenton 3 Dunedin 2

This is what I noted from yesterday's games.

A two run home run from Logan Warmoth was enough to get the win for Buffalo. Warmoth's hit was one of just four for the Bisons. Chavez Young had two.

Nick Allgeyer started but just went 2.2 innings. Allgeyer was on the IL earlier this month and the Jays have been very careful with him since he returned. The Bisons used six pitchers. Tayler Saucedo threw 23 pitches for his rehab. Bowden Francis pitched one shutdown inning which was good after his bad outing earlier this week.

Hayden Juenger started and went three innings. He had one solo home run spoil his shutout. After he left Altoona went to work on Cre Finfrock and Jimmy Burnette.

New Hampshire had eight hits, seven of them from the top four spots in the order. Rafael Lantigua, Orelvis Martinez and Trevor Schwecke had two hits each, Spencer Horwitz had one. One of Orelvis's hits was a two run home run, his 16th. Schwecke is hitting .286 in his early days in AA.

Hillsboro racked up 13 hits off Vancouver pitching. Naswell Paulino gave up six in 4.1 innings, Justin Kelly gave up six in one inning. For the second time this week, Mac Mueller ended the game on the mound.

Steward Berroa homered, his fourth of the season. Miguel Hiraldo tripled and drove in two runs. Garrett Spain had two hits.

Dunedin had just three singles, Dasan Brown had two.

Nick Frasso started and went four shutout innings with seven K's. Once he left the game the Jays were down 3-0 in the next inning.

Burnett is a Scottish surname derived from the French brunette.
I guess I shouldn't be surprised that some have reverted to a mix of the 2.

Spencer Horwitz is an older prospect (24) but he's hit very well in the minors. Leaving aside 9 games of poor hitting in A ball in 2019, here are his wRC+ stats:

2019 Rookie (233 PA) 139 wRC+
2021 A+ (469 PA) 131 wRC+
2021 AA (16 PA) 230 wRC+
2022 AA (251 PA) 148 wRC+

He was BA's #17 prospect for the Jays entering the 2022 season. BA's scouting report basically says, strong hitter, below-average defense, let's see how he does (especially in terms of power) in 2022.

So far I'd say he has acquitted himself pretty well in 2022.

Horwitz is hitting .147/.231/.176 in 38 PAs against LHP with 4 walks and 16 strikeouts this year.  He hit left-handers a lot better than right-handers in Vancouver last year, but there's a big leap between high A and double A and it's hard to ignore 16 strikeouts in 38 PAs.  He turns 25 in November and has a ways to go.

He's come on in June with a positive W/K and 12 XBH in 87 PAs, and maybe he'll surprise us and turn out to be a useful left-handed bat on the bench.

It's too bad he isn't a capable/versatile defender. That would help his cause.

DSL and FCL are playing today. Still SSS for those 2 leagues.

Definitely SSS, but I'm keeping an eye on Carlos Vazquez, a Venezuelan catcher who was signed in January (so not a big signing). No power as yet, but more walks than Ks, just turned 17.

J.C. Masson is tearing it up in the FCL, hopefully we'll see him walk across to the Dunedin squad soon.

The international signing period began on January 15 this year.

A cautionary tale when getting excited about these teenage prospects is catcher Victor Mesia. He made several top-30 lists this last offseason after hitting well as an 18-year-old in the FCL, and with the decent pedigree of a $300K signing bonus. He started this year in Dunedin and hit so badly (3-for-50) that he got sent back to the FCL, where he has continued to struggle.

That said, the Jays do seem to have a lot of exciting teenagers right now. My top 30 list currently has 12 of them.

Horwitz with a two-run HR off a LHP, OPS now up to .908 in AA (64 games).

Trenton Wallace with a good start in Dunedin, he’s old for the level (23) but is having a very good season.

Dasan Brown 2/4 with a double and SB, he’s keeping his OPS over .800. K rate is around 30% but maybe over time he can bring that down (like Samad Taylor).
