Buffalo gave up eight runs with Trevor Richards and Anthony Kay responsible for five of them. Yosver Zulueta had a AA debut to forget, and the bullpen were bombed, as New Hampshire gave up 15 runs. Vancouver and Dunedin were winners. This is your abbreviated Canada Day minor league update.

Buffalo 1 Scranton 8

New Hampshire 4 Portland 15

Spokane 4 Vancouver 8

Dunedin 2 Fort Myers 1

FCL Blue Jays 4 FCL Yankees 8

This is what I noted from yesterday's games.

Trevor Richards gave up two home runs, and three runs total, in an inning. Anthony Kay joined the Bisons from rehabbing and followed Richards. In 1.2 innings he walked three and gave up two hits.

Yosver Zulueta just lasted 1.2 innings. That was because he threw 23 balls and 23 strikes, 46 pitches total. He walked two, gave up two hits, and allowed two runs. We shouldn't expect too much of Zulueta. For one he hasn't pitched much as a professional. Second, he was good in Vancouver but not exceptional. He was probably promoted to evaluate him as he needs to be added to the 40 man roster this coming off-season. In June, in Vancouver, his WHIP was 1.5 and he struck out 18 in 15 overs. Good numbers but not outstanding. Finally, this was his first start in AA and on the mound for Portland was Chris Sale, making a rehab start.

After Zulueta the bullpen was rocked. It got so bad that Ryan Gold had to come on to get the last two outs (and give up a home run).

Cam Eden had two hits, one a home run.

Zach Britton his a three run home run in the second inning for Vancouver. Mac Mueller added a solo shot. Addison Barger had two doubles while Miguel Hiraldo had a double and a single. Abdiel Mendoza started and gave up a run in four innings.

Dunedin had good pitching, Jonatan Bernal threw three shutout innings. Connor Cooke gave up just a solo home run in four innings. Kelvin Perez threw the last two innings.

Rainer Nunez singled in Dunedin's first run with the second run scoring on the same play with a throwing error.

In the FCL, Jaden Rudd, 7th round pick last season, hit his first home run.

Three Stars

Third Star - Rainer Nunez

Second Star - Addison Barger

The Bisons have been pitching most games as bullpen games. Hardly any decent starters on the staff. Lawrence and Hatch have been the only 2 pitchers going deep into games.

At least this allows pitchers like Beasley and others to be conditioned for 1-2 inning relief appearances.

Good point Bpoz.  They bumped Allgeyer into a long relief role, Kay and Francis imploded, and Pearson's injury woes continue.  If Casey Lawrence is your best starter ...  that said, happy for Casey Lawrence.  i'm seeing a future coach in that guy, and I'm glad the club has rewarded him with a few big league innings.  pitching-wise, hernandez is the only potential impact arm who hasn't had a shot in the bigs and he is on the IL.

Thanks. He's now hitting .302/.413/.529 (159 wRC+ and wOBA .412) in 271 PA. K and walk rates look good.

It would be interesting to see a recent scouting report on him (offense, defense, baserunning).
