Notes

Mitch White was not great. He gave up three runs, including a home run, on three hits, two walks and two hit by pitches in 2-2/3 innings. Thomas Hatch was also not great, coughing up four runs in 1-2/3 innings for the blown save and loss. Jordan Luplow hit a grand slam and got an assist in right field after throwing out a runner at second. Davis Schneider swatted his fourth homer of the year. Cam Eden had two hits and stole his 10th base of the year. Wynton Bernard had two hits, two walks and a stolen base.

Alan Roden had a base hit and scored the first run and added a hustle double. He also made a nice diving catch with runners on the corners to end the Hillsboro fourth and keep them off the board. Garrett Spain got his first homer of the year. Gabby Martinez and Alex De Jesus each had a triple. Dasan Brown got the golden sombrero and went 0-for-5. The C's got the win despite nine walks by the pitching staff and two errors.

Rafael Ohashi gave up two home runs to take the loss over five innings in which he gave up three runs on three hits and three walks while whiffing three. Kyle Johnston worked around a hit and a walk and struck out in a shutout frame. Adrian Pinto collected a double for his first extra-base hit and also drew a walk. He is hitting .288 with a .393 on-base percentage. Manuel Beltre made his return from the injured list and had an RBI double. Ryan McCarty had two hits but is still below the Mendoza Line at .192.

Ben Nicholson-Smith reports that Barger's injury is elbow inflammation and that the team describes it as minor.

Still early in the season but I thought I would expose flaws in prospects that don't give them credit. A flaw like no power and for a pitcher low Ks. This is more about "methods" of evaluating prospects.

Manuel Beltre is young and seems to have results in just about all categories so far except power. If healthy he may get to AA this year with little power.

Ohashi is doing well but low Ks. 5 IP in each of his 4 games played this year. He too could get to AA this year. I am probably too optimistic.

I really don't see the Jays jumping Beltre and Ohashi three levels in 2023. They might get to High-A but Ohashi isn't performing as well as some of the other arms in Dunedin.

Your answer is very sensible. Thanks Marc. I was being optimistic. I do like to take stabs in the dark.

Tiedemann and Zulueta did 3 levels last year. They handled it well. Juenger being older than Tiedemann and more healthy/experienced than Zulueta has moved very fast. I had Juenger quite high on my after 2021 prospect list. I am pleased with that opinion. Also pleased with putting D Palmagaini at #10 but Dasan Brown at #8 and Gabby Martinez #9 are 2 evaluations that so far are not shining.

Then Cam Eden. He has surprised me.

Brandon Barriera pitching tonight for Dunedin. Its going well through three innings.
Gerry - Wednesday, May 03 2023 @ 08:10 PM EDT (#428439) #
Barriera went four innings, no hits, one walk, six K's.

He threw 28 fastballs, 17 sliders and 4 change ups. He got 7 whiffs on the slider which had an average spin rate of 2770. His fastball averaged 93.5 and topped out at 95.8.

Barriera recently turned 19.

Barriera's debut might be the best piece of minor league news so far this season.

In 6 of their last 7 games Vancouver has scored a LOT of runs. Yesterdays lineup all had healthy Averages except Alex De Jesus. A lot of the pitching is also looking good.

"Cheese" has been sharp.

In 4 games 2.18 ERA, 20.2 IP 9 H, 9 BB, and 31K.

I dare say Kendry Rojas might be as good or better than Barriera. Keep an eye on him. 22 whiffs yesterday while pitching in bulk after Barriera. 9 Ks and his 22 whiffs came on four different offerings, which is very rare for a 20 year old (not to mention he's also a lefty). And threw 55 of his 67 pitches for strikes.
