NOTES

The Bisons had to face top pitching prospect Paul Skenes twice this week. They did score two runs off him in 4.1 innings on Sunday. Some of the big prospects stepped up. In the first inning Spencer Horwitz singled, moved up on a ground out and scored when Orelvis Martinez singled. Will Robertson homered to centre field off Skenes in the fifth. The Jays had just five hits in the game, Orelvis had two of them.

The Bisons are short of pitching so they added two in recent days. One of them, Beau Sulser, brother of Cole, started but didn't do well. Nine hits and five runs in 3.1 innings was short of what the Bisons hoped for.

Dunedin trotted out six pitchers, five of them were scored upon. The starter was Gage Stanifer who gave up four runs in the first inning and six total in 2.2 innings. The following pitchers didn't do much better.

The D Jays scored seven runs on five hits, but they were helped by ten walks. Tucker Toman went 2-4 with a walk. Toman has been hitting better recently, he has at least one hit in seven of his last eight games. Victor Arias doubled and walked, Arjun Nimmala doubled and had three walks.

The big club had bad pitching and rain too.  Somehow managed to give up fewer runs than the average of the two minor league affiliates that played.  Barely.

That HR by Robertson was the first professional HR Skenes has given up

Did some checking/thinking about the FSL & FCL teams. The FSL Jays scored a lot in the 1st 2 weeks of the season and low scoring in the last 2 weeks. Got swept over 6 games by Jupiter last week and split with Tampa this past week.

Scott Mitchell is doing a monthly prospect high light analysis. I read his article thanks to C's Plus Baseball. Victor Arias is the position prospect star and we don't know much about him. F Perez is the pitching star. I like C O'Halloran as a lefty with a FB velo of 87-91 which works in Dunedin.

All the other position players are not doing much.

The FCL Jays led 11-1 after 8 innings. So they hit (some did) and pitched well. I cannot find the FCL roster. I expect it to be big.

Sam Shaw, from Victoria BC, hit his first pro home run today.

There are three Meza's playing for the FCL Jays today.

All three Meza's are 19 years old. Two are Venezuelan and one is from Colombia.

The Jays have found some strong high school hitters in the mid and late rounds in recent years: Jansen, Schneider and Barger are the standouts. Sammy Hernandez (14th round, 2022), who we traded to the Cardinals for Genesis Cabrera, is looking pretty good too.

Let's hope Sam Shaw will be another name to join that group.

Ben Clemens (Fangraphs):

Appa Yip Yip
2:58 Everyone's looking at the Jays and being like, ooohhh they could trade Vlad or Bo at the deadline, and I'm just over here saying they could trade Kevin Gausman at the deadline.

Ben Clemens
2:59 I'm half with you
I think Bo would fetch a haul, though I don't think they're trading him
Gausman would be an interesting high impact arm, i think you'd get a lot back
3:00 Vlad.... I mean, is he better than Luis Arraez? Serious question
3:01 I'm thinking no, to be honest. It's hard for me to have a lot of confidence that he'll meaningfully outproduce Arraez's offensive output going forward, they're both 0's defensively, and he's making twice as much
so like, I don't think they are getting anything back
85bluejay - Monday, May 06 2024 @ 08:02 PM EDT (#445664) #
I've always been weary of Vlad's ability to stay in shape and be productive - when Vlad finished 2nd in MVP voting I wanted to Jays to sell high - I asked Kevin Goldstein of Fangraphs was kind of pitching return the Jays could get for Vlad and he replied how could I even think of trading the Great Vlad, silly me.

Sorry - "I've always been wary of Vlad's ability to stay in shape and be productive"
John Northey - Tuesday, May 07 2024 @ 08:30 AM EDT (#445671) #
If the other teams are high on Bo then dealing him might make sense given how he hasn't shown any signs of getting out of his slump. Vlad, on the other hand, has started hitting and throughout has shown good secondary stats (exit velocity primarily) so I'd hold him unless overwhelmed in a trade. No question if they want a shake up dealing Bo would be just that. I hope not as I like cheering him on but certainly can see a case for it as I remember with Chapman how the Jays held on too long. Better to trade a guy a day early than a day late.

The Shapiro/Atkins FO started the rebuild at the 2018 trade deadline. They looked bad in 2019. I don't know how good or bad the revenue was in 2017,18 and 19.

2019 was when Vlad, Bo and Biggio were promoted to the big leagues. I don't know if they were rebuilding in 2020, but they did promote Kirk and Pearson. Why did they sign Ryu for 2020? Most likely to generate more revenue. Unfortunately Covid destroyed the revenue generation for 2020 & 2021 but it should have been good because of the good results. Revenue due to good results should have been good in 2022 & 2023.

This successful rebuild was powered by a high payroll IMO which Rogers probably did not mind.

The unstoppable force that is Rafael Ohashi continues tonight with two perfect innings against the AquaSox, a team of potential future hall-of-famers.
