NOTES

Trenton Wallace had an excellent start for Buffalo. He pitched through 4.1 innings with out allowing a hit The next hitter did get a hit and that was it for Wallace, 4.1 innings, six K's two walks, 68 pitches. There are signs of life in the Bisons rotation. Ali Sanchez, a 28 year old catcher with less than 100 major league at-bats, homered twice. Steward Berroa went 2-4 but his average is just .214. Jon Clase went 2-4 as well but he is hitting .375. If there was a need for an OF in the majors, you would expect Clase to be first in line, he is already on the 40 man roster. Orelvis also had two hits to drag his average up to .100.

Yohendrick Pinango had a day for New Hampshire. A single in the first, and RBI single in the third, a walk in the fourth, a triple in the seventh and another RBI single in the eighth. In total 4-4 with a walk, two RBI. Jace Bohrofen stayed hot with two singles. Eddinson Paulino hit his first home run of the season.

Vancouver put Connor O'Halloran on the IL earlier this week so Saturday was a bullpen day. The Jays could be keeping the spot open for Yesavage or Stephens. The C's had just four hits.

Speaking of Yesavage, he was perfect through four innings for Dunedin. But in the fifth he gave up three runs thanks to two ground ball singles to the OF, an infield single, a line drive single and a steal of home as part of a double steal. He used 67 pitches, 50 strikes and just 17 balls. He used five pitches, got a whiff on all of them, and had 18 whiffs in total. He racked up ten K's.

Once again Gage Stanifer followed Yesavage and was better. Four shutout innings, one hit, two walks, seven K's. Stanifer used three pitches. He main two and sinker, slider. He also threw four changeups but no hitter swung at the change up. He will need that third pitch to be a starter.

Bryce Arnold is a 23 year old from Hamilton. He is 23 and so a little old for the FSL. But he is delivering. On Saturday he doubled and hit his third and fourth home runs of the season. His OPS is over 1,200. JR Freethy had three hits.

Jean Joseph was called up from the complex today. He pinch hit for Daulton Varsho and hit a two run home run.

I didn't see Yesavage pitch today but he got 10 whiffs in just 5 innings with 0 walks.

Of the 67 pitches he threw he got 50 strikes, now I don't care what anybody says but that is truly outstanding.

In fact even in the majors I don't recall ever, anyone throwing such a high percentage of strikes over that many pitches, which is not to say it hasn't happened.

I just know it is not very common.

Anybody watch him pitch today to give us some impressions?

George Kirby's been in and around that 75% threshold a lot.

But it is indeed rare.

Khal Stephen - 16 IP, 1 ER, 2 BB, 20 K. 0.56 ERA
Trey Yesavaga - 12.2 IP, 4 ER, 6 BB, 18 K. 2.84 ERA
Gage Stanifer - 12 IP, 1 ER, 6 BB, 20 K. 0.75 ERA
Gilberto Batista - 11 IP, 0 ER, 1 BB, 10 K. 0.00 ERA

Just don't ask about the bullpen.

I watched the start. The impressive part of Yesavage yesterday is that the Tigers' young hitters mostly laid off the splitter, which is widely considered his best offering. But he best then with his other offerings because they were expecting the split.

He got Ks off the splitter (3 swinging, 1 looking, fastball (3 swing), slider (2 swing), Curveball (1 swing).

The fastball command was 100 times better than it was in the first two starts. His second start looked much better in the stat line than in reality. This third game pulled it all together.

Side note, Edward Duran is the best defensive catcher in the system. He probably won't hit enough to ever be a regular catcher but he certainly has backup potential and he does hit the ball hard.

I am not sure but I suspect that pitchers Stephen, Yesavage, Stanifer and Batista have been working out at the Dunedin complex most of the off season. This would give our development staff an idea of how they are doing. It seems they concluded they get assigned to Dunedin.

I read a few years ago that each prospect is given a set of goals to achieve. If successful they get promoted. I always thought that box score success earned a promotion ie they have nothing left to learn at the current level. I was probably wrong.

So 3 games, 12 2/3 IP for Yesavage with 8 H 6 R 4 ER 6 BB 18 SO. 0 HR 0 HBP. Pretty solid so far in A ball. I figure he'll be in A+ soon. Probably by June 1st if nothing goes wrong, with a goal of some AA time in September if he has a solid summer in Vancouver.

Thanks for your comments Marc, I really appreciate it.

Yeah it's nice to see he has other swing and miss pitches
and control.

He looks promising
