*** 3 Stars!!! ***

3. Fernando Perez, Vancouver

2. Grant Rogers, New Hampshire

1. Alan Roden, Buffalo

Notes

Alan Roden had two doubles, a single, a walk and the walk-off HBP to give him an on-base-plus-slugging percentage of 1.092. Davis Schneider also had three hits. Will Robertson homered, singled, walked twice and knocked home four runs. Leo Jiménez was 2-for-5 with a walk and scored three times out of the leadoff spot. Joey Loperfido had two hits and two RBI. Rainer Nuñez had a double, a single, a walk and a stolen base. CJ Van Eyk coughed up five runs on five hits and two walks but struck out five. Erik Swanson and Justin Bruihl had perfect stanzas with Bruihl fanning the side. Kevin Gowdy was gonged for four runs in two innings but still got the win.

Grant Rogers put together a stellar start with one run allowed over six innings, scattering seven hits and a walk. He recorded 10 ground ball outs and struck out four. Hunter Gregory took the loss by giving up three runs in 1-2/3 innings. Grayson Thurman stranded two runners for Gregory by getting the final out. Charles McAdoo poked one out of the yard for the second time this season. Yohendrick Pinango doubled and walked. Other base hits came from RJ Schreck, Jace Bohrofen, Dasan Brown and Alex Stone. Brown bumped up his batting average to .260 and swiped his seventh base of the year.

Arjun Nimmala and the Vancouver Canadians wore South Asian heritage-inspired jerseys at Nat Bailey Stadium on Tuesday.

Arjun Nimmala followed up his Northwest League Player of the Week award by going 3-for-6 with a double, an RBI and a stolen base. On the negative side, he committed a throwing and fielding error at short. Jackson Hornung also had three hits, including a double, and had a walk and two ribbies. Eddie Micheletti was the RBI leader with five, thanks in large part to a bases-clearing two-bagger. Carter Cunningham doubled and walked three times. Fernando Perez retired the first 12 men he faced and finished up with six innings of two-run ball on three hits and a walk while fanning three. Julio Ortiz struck out three over two shutout frames.

All nine Dunedin hitters had at least one hit apiece with Sam Shaw leading the way with three. Unfortunately, Shaw made three errors at second base. Yhoangel Aponte homered among his two hits and Eduard Duran also went deep. Tucker Toman had a two-hit game. Josh Kasevich was 1-for-3 with a walk before giving way to Lizandro Rodriguez, who doubled in his lone at-bat. The 22-year-old Rodriguez was recently signed as a free agent by the Blue Jays after being in the Kansas City system since 2019. Spencer Turnbull surrendered two runs (one earned) on five hits and hit a batter over 4-1/3 innings. He struck out four and did not walk anyone. Juanmi Vasquez took the loss after giving up five runs in 1-2/3 innings. Nate LaRue gave up a run in his one inning. Jack Eshelman put up a goose egg.

Yorman Licourt homered, tripled, walked and drove in six runs to bring his batting average up to .317 and his OPS up to .947. David Beckles, Aldo Gaxiola, and Drew Jemison all had two-hit games with Jemison drawing three walks for a perfect day at the plate. Enmanuel Bonilla had a two-run triple. Of note, former Blue Jay Cam Eden went 2-for-4 for the FCL Yankees. Adam Macko allowed three runs on five hits over three innings but struck out four without walking anybody. Franly Urena put up two zeroes for the win. Troy Guthrie struck out four and allowed a run over 3-1/3 innings. Grimsby, Ontario native Aiden Taggart made his pro debut and recorded the final two outs. The 6-foot-4, 18-year-old righthander signed as a free agent out of West Niagara High School on March 15.

Shaw continues to give me Davis Schneider vibes on defense. I'm going to bet his best defensive spot will be LF (He's too short for 1B).

Will Robertson may just have had a hot streak, but he looks like he's made some improvements this season: he's making better swing decisions and more contact, resulting in a more manageable strikeout rate and more walks. His average EV (92.4) and his max EV (114.8) are both up a couple ticks from last year and would be in the 85-95th percentile in the majors. He's also raised his average launch angle to 15 degrees. Despite all that, his actual power production has dipped this year.

He's 27, and hasn't been on prospect lists for a few years, so isn't likely to make great strides, but he has shown steady progress and is now at the point where I think he's close to earning a chance to carve out a role in the majors. Unfortunately for him, he's in the Blue Jays org, who have roughly a bajillion outfielders ahead of him who also bat left (or switch-hit). Griffin Conine, who we drafted a year ahead of Robertson, has a very similar profile and track record and has had some success in limited time with the Marlins.

Of all players with minimum 50ab in AAA this year, Roden is #2 with a 193wrc+. The other guys near him are mostly ~30yr old vets.

In today's Future Blue Jays Newsletter (always a good read), he touches on a bevy of prospects.

Some notes:
- Lots of praise for Nimmala, still has some work to do on his approach but looking good on both sides of the ball
- Lack of ABS in High-A threw some of the promoted Vancouver guys for a loop and they're having to adjust
- Duran had two-a-day workouts during the off-season, is looking excellent behind the plate
- Watts-Brown has improved his athleticism

BA Draft Chat
Tyler
Will the lack of clear-cut options at the top of the board lead to underslot opportunities with college players? How far can the top prep players fall?
Carlos Collazo
Yes, but I think this is kind of the case every year in the draft. Last year's top-end hitting group was awesome and there were still 10 college players who signed underslot deals. Five of those happened inside the first 10 picks. I think there's a pretty high floor for the top three high school players in the class. Ethan Holliday falling past four would be a mild surprise, same with Eli Willits sliding past eight. I guess it's more likely Seth Hernandez slides because he is a prep righty but even then I've talked to too many people who just think he's the best player in the class.

Anonymous
I asked in chat yesterday and wondering your answer today if having the first pick in either '25 or '26 drafts, who would you take and why?
Carlos Collazo
With the relatively major caveat that I've not spent too much time on the 26 class yet, I would probably be picking between Ethan Holliday, Seth Hernandez, Eli Willits, Grady Emerson and Jacob Lombard. It's kind of crazy how the industry is already talking up next year's prep high school class. There's not a college player that excites me enough (yet) in the 2026 class to get me out of the high school demographic—though I do love how Roch Cholowsky is looking... If you are asking if I would rather pick 1st in 2025 or pick first in 2026 I would just take the 2025 pick because I know I like three players well enough to happily take them first overall this year. One prep shortstop in the hand beats two in the bush. That's how the saying goes, right?

Anonymous
Could you see the Bluejays going under slot at 8 and then spending big later on?
Carlos Collazo
Yes.

Anonymous
What are you hearing for the Blue Jays at pick 8?
Carlos Collazo
Sources are telling me they're hoping to get a really good baseball player.
