NOTES

Buffalo entered the seventh and last inning of game one trailing 2-0. With one out Orelvis reached on catchers interference. With two outs, and on a two strike count, down to his last strike, Will Robertson homered to score two and tie the game. Two walks followed the home run, leaving it to Alan Roden to drive in the walk off winning run with a single.

Lazaro Estrada went 5.2 innings, with five K's and one unearned run allowed. Estrada had a 10.93 ERA in April but in five May starts his ERA is 1.85 and his WHIP is 0.99.

Robertson kept it going in game two, he homered again, his fourth in the last four games. He also singled, walked and drove in three runs. As a non 40 man roster player his path to the majors is tough, the Jays have several outfielders who are already on the 40 man who have OK numbers. Among those is Joey Loperfido who singled, doubled and drove in a run.

Devereaux Harrison didn't throw enough strikes, 45 in total and 32 balls. Thats not where you want the ratio to be. He only lasted 3.2 innings and was charged with one run. Michael Dominguez had three shutout innings in relief.

RJ Schreck picked up another two hits.

Vancouver hitters were quiet, just six hits. Jackson Wentworth was hit around a bit, 8 hits total in 5.1 innings, but he held Hillboro to just one run. Pat Gallagher took the loss but it was a two out error by Sean Keys that led to two runs scoring.

The D Jays had just five hits. Javen Coleman took the loss by giving up a couple of runs in the eighth. Coleman had some good outings in April but his May ERA is over 6.

Landen Maroudis made his fifth appearance for the FCL Jays. He went four shutout innings with two K's. Can Dunedin be far away? The one issue is that he is limited to a lower number of pitches, not sure how many but if he could go five innings he should be ready for A ball.

The Jays had a five run seventh inning thanks to a couple of the usual guys. Yorman Licourt doubled with the bases loaded to drive in three and Aldo Gaxiola tripled to score two.

Enmanuel Bonilla had a horrendous start to the season. He was hitting .067 on May 19th. Since then he has a six game hitting streak. He has also walked five times in the last three games and reduced his strikeout rate. It's nothing to get excited about yet but maybe it could lead to something.

Will Robertson is in a tough spot, as his value to the organization seems to be as potentially MLB-ready depth not on the 40 man. He's clearly past prospect status, but he once held that pedigree, missed a year due to COVID and has repeated AA and now AAA, looking much better in the repeat seasons.

I see in the Steward Berroa-depth category, in that he could get the call in an emergency but can be DFAed in a win-win scenario - if he's claimed, he's getting more runway, if not, the depth remains and he got a cup of coffee as a reward.

Not the Lukes-depth category, where I feel they view the player as a platonic-ideal 26th man, and thus not to be DFAed, but rather guaranteed at least some time in the bigs at the end the bench.  Lukes seems to have moved out of that category entirely at this point, but that was his spot the last two years.  Good for him!
Stefanic could land in either category.  For the pitchers, Lucas is likely the fungible depth long-guy, with Schultz vying to at least hang on to the 40 man spot.
Estrada is another example, and both he and Robertson will be minor league FAs at the end of the season, I think?

It has been great to see guys like Schultz and Fisher contribute (good call on him John Northey!) after the retreads like Barnes, Tate and Walker at the start of the year.  Good luck to Walker, traded for cash to the Phillies.

It's going to be an interesting trade deadline, and I think any concerns about a logjam could clear up if we end up buying or selling.  I just hope we pick a lane!

Kendry Rojas has begun his rehab assignment in the FCL. Sounds like it was a midsection injury and not his arm, thankfully.

I had heard oblique for Rojas.

There's an upcoming bullpen/40-man crunch. Erik Swanson and Ryan Burr are both currently on the 60-Day IL and nearing the end of their rehab assignments and neither are optionable, afaik. I think Burr has to be added on June 5th, and Swanson on June 8th, and it's hard to see the Jays not giving them both at least a showing. I assume this means the end of the Jose Urena experience, and a second 40-man spot can be cleared by moving Jake Bloss to the 60-Day IL. But how are the Jays going to create another spot in the bullpen? Lauer isn't optionable, he's been pitching well, and they need him to take starter's innings as needed. Fluharty, Little and Fisher are all optionable, but pitching well. Chad Green is probably pitching the worst, but he's a veteran on a FA contract, and his forward-looking estimators (xFIP, SIERA) are pretty decent. I expect either Fluharty or (more likely) Fisher will be the undeserved odd man out.

Burr apparently has a sore shoulder again so won't be back soon. (if at all - this sort of recurring injury sounds like he's heading towards surgery)

Presumably Sanchez & Stefanic come off the 40-man when Heineman & Gimenez return. Easton Lucas has been pretty bad in AAA, so he may not stick around long given Lauer's success.

Gabriel - what about Schultz?
Marc Hulet - Friday, May 30 2025 @ 02:01 PM EDT (#460622) #
Burr is definitely not back any time soon.
GabrielSyme - Friday, May 30 2025 @ 02:58 PM EDT (#460627) #
hahaha, I thought I'd thought of everything, and I completely forgot about Schultz (and apparently a reinjury for Burr). Yeah, Schultz seems likely to be the second out after Urena, he's obviously optionable since he's already been optioned down once. But if Burr is back on the shelf, I imagine Schultz will be safe at least until Turnbull gets called up.
GabrielSyme - Friday, May 30 2025 @ 03:01 PM EDT (#460628) #
Heineman and Gimenez are still on the 40, so the Jays will just need to option someone down rather than clear a spot on the 40-man.
GabrielSyme - Friday, May 30 2025 @ 03:03 PM EDT (#460629) #
And I'd missed that Turnbull was already added to the 40-man roster. A comedy of errors today.

They'll option Fisher imo, at least temporarily, but I don't see that there's any reason to think Swanson/Burr deserve any special treatment here - it's not clear to me that either is a great bet to be better than the relievers already here.

Eddie Micheletti after two innings today...2 HR, 5 RBI
Kelekin - Friday, May 30 2025 @ 05:17 PM EDT (#460643) #
Micheletti has been heating up - 1.023 OPS the past week prior to the 2 HR performance.
Marc Hulet - Friday, May 30 2025 @ 05:40 PM EDT (#460647) #
Josh Kasevich hasn't played in the last three games of his rehab, which likely isn't a good thing.
