I don't think I would have gone with IKF over Davis or Loperfido. Yesavage has groundball tendencies, but I'm not convinced the defensive upgrade is worth the offensive tradeoff. I'd want the better bat in there against Gilbert.
I’m not even sure IKF is a defensive upgrade if he’s at 2B. He’s looked poor there all playoffs and historically the only place he’s consistently been good defensively is at 3B.
I hope the team gets out to a solid lead early on. I think falling behind could make it tough to win this one, as the hitters may inclined to overly press in that situation.
Yesavage pitching with confidence. Great work. But a couple of those pitches to the M’s sluggers in the second inning were dangerous — floated over the middle of the plate and got hit hard foul.
Suarez giveth, Suarez taketh away. Great play there to save a couple runs (sadly).
The Jays look very locked in against Gilbert though, aside from Gimenez and Lukes that inning. Need a big zero from Yesavage here to get the home lads back on the sticks.
What a fantastic play by Vlad though. No panic, calmly threw it to second. I feel like his defence over the years has had peaks and valleys but this year I feel like he’s been great more often than not.
Agreed it was a nice play by Varsho to get it in so quick, but what on Earth was Crawford doing? Deep fly ball like that, it’s so strange he wasn’t at least around second base thinking of scoring should the ball have kicked around a bit. We all knew Barger has a great arm but was he thinking of tagging from first? Just bizarre.
As I said before the series started, the one stark difference between the teams is defence. Not many three innings turn so dramatically one way and another based fundamentally on defense.
If Barger can get it going again, this offense is just so much better. I don't know why anyone would ever throw Ernie a first pitch fastball in the zone but happy they do!
These DPs are about as clutch as clutchiness gets.
Agreed though, the Mariners are looking way more on time with Yesavage and chasing much less. I’d be thinking about Eric Lauer should Seattle again get somebody on base next inning.
I definitely let him start the 5th and see. But have Lauer throwing just in case. Or Bassitt if that’s how you wanna roll (personally I’d prefer Lauer).
The Jays broadcast team called Gilbert “one of the best pitchers in baseball” 5 times (that I counted). What stats do they give the broadcast team? Gilbert is a slightly below average pitcher for his career away from T-Mobile.
Varland threw very loosely at the end of the top of the fifth. If the Mariners had gotten another runner or two, he was going to be first out of the pen.
It would actually be cool to see Lauer come in, be sharp, and just pitch the rest of the game. This contest is too close for the likes of Seranthony and Hoffman to be safely relied upon to lock it down.
Alternatively, the Blue Jays could just score some more runs.
Okay, keep attacking the zone—I don’t want anyone on for Raleigh. And I agree with other wondering about where the other options are from this expanded pen?
For a Platinum Glove winner Raleigh’s defense has been pretty rough this whole series. A couple nice plays here and there but his catching has been clunky to put it politely. A thought a good throw there has a good chance to nab Guerrero there (who himself did great to react quickly and score without difficulty).
Raleigh is a good framer and has a strong arm. He’s not good at blocking balls in the dirt. He’s a good defender but the Platinum Glove was a function of his offence not his defence. I think Kirk is a better defensive C.
It's more than a little obtuse to pretend that a four run lead in Game 6 of the ALCS against the 2-3-4 hitters on the opposing team is not high-leverage.
Does the manager start Springer at DH tomorrow? Another option would be to start Davis Schneider at DH and keep Springer on the bench for a possible pinch-hitting assignment.
They can pitch Pete Walker for all I care as long as they get it done. Finally beating Seattle here at home feels massive. But I also doubt we’ll be so fortunate to see Raleigh have such a rough game at the dish (or behind it).
Live at least another day! By the way, is this only the second ever Game 7 in Blue Jays history? 1985 is the only other one I can think of… but it’s 4am here and my brain is not working super too goodly.
One of the funny things about this game is that it could have been so different in so many ways. Back to back innings with bases loaded double plays is obviously lucky but Vladdy his a 116 MPH ball with the bases loaded that went for an out which is absurdly unlucky. Defense was great today and so was bullpen. Just a solid team win. One more gents!
If I'm Dan Wilson, Andres Munoz is the first or second arm out of my pen tomorrow, depending on the situation, and is going for two innings unless he's pitching awfully.
Seattle can't lose both these games and not pitch him and you can't save him for a save situation that may not come. That will be another thing the Jays will have to contend with.
Another much less important but still very important thing about Yesavage that i've been very surprised to see from a rookie is how comfortable he is fielding - there were some iffy plays to make and he made it easy on his fielders by not hesitating to get to the base and catching the ball comfortably and easily in stride both on regular grounders to 1B and on tricky DPs. No awkwardness from him at all out there.

Yeah, leverage tomorrow mostly doesn't matter. If you are losing by a bunch, still pitch as if it is tied as you don't need to save anyone. Even if you are winning by a bunch, with 3 days off to the World Series start, you basically don't need to save arms and should pitch as if tied too.
So best arms first (subject to fatigue, matchups, and base runner situations). No reason to save your best relievers for the end of the game if your going to relievers earlier. Of course riding a starter who is pitching well also makes sense. And just because you have lots of pitchers available it doesn't mean you should bring in lots of pitchers - sometimes staying with the pitchers who are pitching well rather than swapping to all your pitchers until you find the one that isn't pitching well today is the right idea.
Time for the 2nd game 7 ever for the Jays - and this time the wind can't hurt them (razzen frazzen Sundberg ball that just kept going and going and going).
Been thinking about how the next 5 years will be tons of fun with a lot of the same guys here for that period.
Signed for 2026-2030+: Vlad, Kirk, Gimenez
Under team control until 2030+: Lukes, Little, Varland, Barger, Loperfido, Yesavage
OK, no jumping off bridges at the idea of watching the Little high wire act for 5 more years. It'll be interesting to see if they resign any of Bo, Bassitt, Scherzer, Bieber this winter, or extend Varsho. Gausman, Springer, and Garcia are also free agents post 2026.
My point is that we have a strong team and it isn't going away. What looked like it might be the end of an era back in the spring is now looking like the core of a potential dynasty (2020-2030 - 4 playoffs already, with 5 years to go) that could rival or even beat the 1983-1993 stretch. Fun time to be a fan.

They have Santander for at least the next 4 years and I believe he's going to rebound. They also have Straw for as long as they want him. Same with Heineman who hasn't even reached arbitration.
I was going by Cot's list of guys and added Yesavage as they haven't put in arb/FA for guys who didn't come up until this year. So Fisher, Fluharty, and many others who easily could be sent back down in 2026 I skipped. Heineman will be a free agent post 2028. Straw is only under contract for 26 and 27.
Another good question for the offseason will be - do the Jays go for Tarik Skubal who the Tigers are openly working on trading now with 1 year of control left. He has 2 straight years of 6+ bWAR & fWAR, which is worth a LOT but odds are at this point he'd be wanting to go to free agency unless offered a record setting deal I'd think, as he enters his age 29 season. But dang if he wouldn't look amazing in a rotation with Yesavage-Gausman-Berrios and whoever. Jays could easily afford whatever he demands (I'm guessing 7/$40+ per year is the starting point, with it taking up to 10/$400 mil to get him on the dotted line). Doubt the Pirates are nuts enough to trade Paul Skenes (not a FA until after 2029) so Skubal is easily the best available pitcher this winter. Wonder what the Tigers would accept? Ain't no way Yesavage goes, but pretty much anyone else has to be available for a trade I'd think.
Jays need to get to Kirby early because a bullpen game heavily favors the Mariners. Bieber throwing up a zero in the 1st and the Jays striking early would be huge.

I actually suggested to my son that they should probably just start Munoz and let him go as long as he can't. They of course won't do that, but I'm kinda glad they won't.

I assume Seattle will go Kirby, Woo, then Castillo or Munoz depending on the inning. It would be ideal if the Jays cored runs on Kirby as the back end is tougher than the start.
Munoz could go two innings and he is their best pitcher.
i watched the full MLB postgame on youtube and something interesting caught my attention.
early on they were talking about game 7s and how all hands are on deck and how everyone will have their spikes on ready to play and all that.
then towards the end of the show they had Yesavage on, and asked him whether he would have his cleats on in game 7 and he said something like "well after throwing 85 pitches today no i don't think i'll have the cleats on", and the interview moved on a to a bunch of other things.
But then the last question they gave him was i think ARod saying "Trey you have Jeter here who has won 6 titles - any questions you have for him?"....and Yesavage just gave a simple "yeah - what advice do you have for me for winning a championship?", and Jeter's instant answer was "Get your cleats on tomorrow and get into the bullpen".
Yesavage seemed a bit struck by it and said something like "yeah maybe I should" - and I sure hope he does.
Great winning advice from Jeter and I hope the kid takes it to heart.
I continue to feel pretty good about things, as I think the Jays have fairly comprehensively outplayed the M's the last 4 games. Of course, tomorrow's starter usually dictates momentum. As others have said, scoring early seems extra important today with Woo and Munoz ready to go. Just as important - get as many balls in play against the M's defence as possible.
Skimming game logs I see 1.1 innings as max that Munoz has thrown this year, with max ~ 30 pitches. How far can he go and be effective? We may find out today.
I was at that fantastic ballgame last night, so a few observations reading back this thread today:
I'm watching the game at my desk today, and I don't think the broadcast captures well just how much everybody was standing for almost every pitch, at least in Level 100 by third base. A lot of the time you just see everyone behind home sitting down.
I agree with greenfrog about the terrible decision to have Gimenez bunt. It wasn't very likely at the time that 3 runs were going to win that game, and they had a pitcher on the ropes and giving him an out there was letting him off the hook. I particularly hated the decision because Gimenez isn't that big a liability for a double play. It would have been much more warranted later in the game, and I would have minded the decision less if they straight took it off after the 0-1 count. Perhaps they did, and Gimenez did the fake bunt pull the bat back move on his own. Let your players play in the 2nd inning John, no need to manage yet.
While I tend to agree with the thoughts on IKF at 2B, the team clearly does not or they would just play IKF at 3B and Clement at 2B. I thought it was the right move to keep your best defense in the game instead of PHing with Schneider. That being said, I'd be more than happy with Schneider getting the start tonight, though I don't think that will happen.
I'm with uglyone that they'll find a way to bring Bieber back next year.
And obtuse is the perfect word tbh. Hoffman didn't pitch the 8th in G5 because he had pitched against those guys the night before. He was going to be used to close out the 9th of a hopefully 2-1 game.
I think it's pretty funny that everyone keeps talking about the jays 'making contact' and 'not striking out' and meanwhile the Jays have the most HR in the postseason and by far the best ISO.
Gimenez did the fake bunt pull the bat back move on his own.
Which seems to be what happened. The bunt was on, but the Seattle corner infielders were charging very aggressively and Gimenez didn't like his chances of getting it done. As Schneider has said many, many times, he trusts his players and apparently Gimenez caught his eye after the first bunt attempt, as if to say "this isn't going to work."
My comment about IKF at 2B and not sure if he was a big defensive upgrade there was in reference to Schneider. The small sample size numbers for 2025 bear this out (IKF hasn't been very good defensively at 2B but its in a tiny sample size). If IKF is in the line-up versus Schneider then I'm not surprised they configure it with Clement at 3B and IKF at 2B. With his career playing time now giving a decent data size, Clement looks fairly elite defensively at 3B and merely pretty good at 2B. IKF's numbers are all over the place, but his 2024 numbers for the Jays playing 2B were outstanding. All to say, I think what they are doing makes sense if you get past the whole IKF vs. Schneider thing (for which there are pros and cons but there is zero chance that they switch things up tonight).
I'm not thrilled with bullpen management that has Lauer having thrown the fewest pitches of anyone on the Jays staff this round.
Obviously it won't remain that way after today, but I would be irate if I was a Mariners fan and Munoz had thrown the fewest pitches on their staff in the series. He'll be good for two.
Seattle really looked like they were ready to go to third on the Gimenez bunt. Naylor was basically past the mound before Gimenez made contact with the first attempt. I liked trying to slap away l.
Vlad has had a post-season. For all post seasons with 40+ PA (Vlad at 47) his 462 average is 4th all time. His 532 OBP is 5th all time, 1000 slg is 2nd all time (Beltran 2022 is higher at 1022). This is out of 991 players. For all-time career Ernie CLement's 447 average is #1 (40+ PA), his 463 OBP is 9th. Vlad's 705 Slg% is 10th (remember he had those bad playoffs in 20/22/23). Vlad is one of 12 hitters with a 200 wRC+ lifetime in the playoffs. Delgado is #8 at 204, and ex-Jay Willie Aikens is #1 at 230 (who knew?).

Is it clear the bunt was a manager call and not just Gimenez doing what he wants. I know in past interviews Schneider (correctly) says he hates the bunt, but lets players do what they do best.
Same lineup again. I would have gone Schneider at LF but I get it I guess. My biggest worry is that Schneider hates downgrading defense so he's afraid of pinch hitting when he needs to unless he can't avoid it.
I expect that oly if the Jays are losing late will we see Schneider. I don't think they'll pinch hit if they have a narrow lead, even if IKF is up in a key spot.
Let's go Shane Bieber... If he's his good self tonight and the offense can give a 3 run lead then I predict Scherzer and Bassitt come in and shut out the Mariners.
