The Globe & Mail reports this morning that Jamie Campbell has been named the voice of the Blue Jays for Rogers Sportsnet.

Campbell told the G&M, "Because I am a hard-core baseball fan, I know how a lot of baseball fans are going to react to this announcement. Baseball fans are an interesting bunch. And, for the hard core, this might not be a popular choice."

Hey Jamie, here at Batter's Box, we're the people you're referring to. And you had us at "I am a hard-core baseball fan."

Congratulations, and welcome aboard!

Editor's Note: Campbell has tentatively agreed to an interview with Batter's Box. Details will be announced as they become available. Questions for Jamie? Ask'em here and we'll pass them along.

Hi Jamie, congratulations on the new position! I have three questions for you:

1 - What kind of experience do you have that relates to this specific position?

2 - Have you decided on a 'Home Run call' yet?

3 - What are some of the names that you've heard floating around who may be working alongside you this summer?

Welcome to the team and best of luck in 2005!
Fawaz - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 11:31 AM EST (#104369) #
Congrats!

What kind of influence will you have on some of the production elements and the kind of stats we might see on screen? Can we expect some new stuff?
Mike Green - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 11:35 AM EST (#104370) #
What Mick said. Loving and respecting the game and its history is a fine asset for a baseball broadcaster.

Congratulations to Jamie Campbell.

And here's a question for Jamie to lead things off: what single thing about the game today would you like to see change?
Four Seamer - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 11:36 AM EST (#104371) #
Congratulations to Jamie Campbell. I think this choice has great potential - Jamie has a lot of television experience to go with an apparent passion for the game. Best of all, we can expect him to be in this for the long haul, since he's a young, local talent. It would be wonderful for the Jays if their television broadcasters become a national institution just like Tom and Jerry on the radio broadcasts. Here's hoping Jamie can fill that role for many years.
Matthew E - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 11:40 AM EST (#104373) #
I've certainly heard Jamie Campbell's name before, but I can't seem to call to mind his face, voice, or anything he's done. What's his reputation? Is he smart, or is he a goof? Are we going to have to turn down the volume and bust out the radio? Should I be pleased about this?

Anyway, I'm looking forward to finding out. Today is my last day at this lowish-paying job, and when the higher-paying one starts, in a week, I'll be able to resubscribe to Sportsnet, and watch baseball on TV regularly for the first time in years. Welcome aboard, Mr. Campbell.
Mick Doherty - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 11:47 AM EST (#104376) #
For what it's worth, there have been three James Campbells in MLB history, though none went by Jamie. One caught 82 games for the expansion '62-'63 Astros; one pinch-hit 13 times, but apparently never played the field, for the '70 Cardinals; and the most recent appeared in two games, and won one, for the '90 Royals.

When I heard the first rumors of Campbell as the new play-by-play man for the Jays, I'll admit it, I was a little concerned -- all I'd seen him do was talking head duty on Sportsnet News.

Learning that he's a huge baseball fan has really set my mind at ease -- for me, the keys to a great announcer are enthusiasm and knowledge. Campbell has always come across on Sportsnet News as personable and not at all stiff or stuffy, and with a love of baseball and passion for the game he should do well. I'm looking forward to his first broadcast.

Great recent announcer moment, for me: the call of the final shot at the Scott Tournament of Hearts last weekend. You can hear the light going on in the announcer's head, where all of a sudden he's realized that Jones is about to make this impossible shot, and he was so excited calling it that I stood up. A totally electric moment.

So, that sets up my Jamie Campbell question: are there any baseball announcer moments that stand out in your memory like that?

And as to what your home run call will be, can I respectfully suggest that it not involve luncheon meat? Thanks.
StephenT - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 12:44 PM EST (#104398) #
Matthew, more background is here: http://www.sportsnet.ca/mlb/article.jsp?content=20050303_153624_2364

He's very articulate, judging from his recent comments.

Will any spring Jays games be televised (besides the 2 MLB.TV games next week)?

P.S. I still miss the great straightaway centre-field camera angle Sportsnet used a few years ago, but I guess he can't control that.
joemayo - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 12:54 PM EST (#104400) #
<i>And as to what your home run call will be, can I respectfully suggest that it not involve luncheon meat?<i>

...or anything to do with "and what d'you think about that??"

I think Jamie Campbell will be a nice change from Rob Faulds. His voice seems like it will lend well to broadcasts unlike the awkwardness of his predecessor. I'm looking forward to hearing him calling a game.
Magpie - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 01:09 PM EST (#104409) #
I really, really like the idea of having a baseball fan working the games. So often networks give the job to whichever sports broadcaster appeals to them at the moment, whether he's a baseball guy or not.

Although we do acknowledge that Shulman was awfully good for a basketball guy.

It would be nice if he gets a regular partner, so they can get accustomed to working with each other. That can take a little time.

Craig B - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 01:15 PM EST (#104412) #
Very pleased for Jamie Campbell, and quite excited as well. I think this will be a good fit, and hopefully he can be with the team for a while to let his style grow (and grow on us).

I heard him do a couple of CFL games last year, and he did very well. Incidentally, as I was trying to figure out what games I'd seen him do, I came across this article by Marty York talking a bit about Campbell (who he has worked with at Sportsnet). The highlights: JC's apparently a perfectionist and a fanatic for preparation.

Plus, I can assure you all this : Jamie Campbell knows his baseball. I think we're in for a treat.

Useless Tyler - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 01:27 PM EST (#104428) #
I am half-excited, though the most recent comments Campbell has made on baseball make him out to be a bit of a pessimist - "they'll be lucky to get fourth". I did prefer Faulds' unbridled enthusiasm.

As for a question, I'd suggest asking if he'd be willing to preserve Faulds' legendary "Whaddya think about that?". If not, yet another Cheer Club cheer may be laid to rest.
Anders - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 02:34 PM EST (#104497) #
Well we need a few new 'k' signs for the Cheer Club.

Like Scott Schoeneweis.
Did we have k's for Bush and Chacin?

We should ask him what he thinks.
Useless Tyler - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 02:47 PM EST (#104509) #
We never made any for Bush - though I had for a while bugged NFH to make John Kerry and George Bush K's for the two.

Chacin, I don't think we ever did - what really could we do for Shoeneweis or Chacin?
Useless Tyler - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 02:48 PM EST (#104510) #
Best Damn Sports Schoeneweis Period?
Matthew E - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 02:54 PM EST (#104516) #
Well, 'schoene weis' means 'beautiful point' in English--isn't there something we can do with that?
Jordan - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 03:19 PM EST (#104530) #
If I have the pronunciation correct, "Chacin" sounds a little like a cash register -- cha-sheen! Maybe something connected with "ringing up" the batter?
Mike Green - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 03:24 PM EST (#104536) #
It's "Cha-seen". He's the first ever Gustavo in the majors according to BR, so maybe something "with gusto".

With Jamie Campbell being the voice of the Blue Jays for TV. Who is the best television broadcast team in Blue Jays history ?

1. Don Chevrier, Tony Kubek & Fergie Olver
2. Don Chevrier, Tommy Hutton & Fergie Olver
3. Jim Hughson & Buck Martinez
3. Dan Shulman & Buck Martinez
4. Brian Williams & John Cerutti
5. Brian Williams & Tommy Hutton
6. Rob Faulds & Joe Carter
7. Rob Faulds & John Cerutti
8. Rob Faulds & J.C. Jerry Howarth and Gary Mathews

2. Hughson and Buck
3. anything with Kubek

Last. Anything with Brian Williams

I'd rank them:

1. Shulman/Martinez
2. Chevrier/Kubek
...and you can have the rest.

I hope Jamie Campbell can work his way onto this list.

Congrats to Jamie.

I wonder who the color guy will be?

It's going to be weird to tune in and not see/hear Faulds/Cerutti. I thought Faulds and Cerutti really improved last season.

Jamie Campbell is on talking about how he chats on here under a pseudonym and just brought up that idea that someone mentioned the other day about being able to hear Murray Eldon on the radio broadcasts.
BuddyBiancalana - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 05:36 PM EST (#104581) #
This is good news for Jays fans and anyone wanting to watch a Jays game on tv. Jamie Campbell actually loves the game! A couple of years ago I had seats in the upper 500 Section for a Jays vs. Expos game and Jamie was sitting in the seat behind me taking the game in as any baseball fan would. I said hi to him and he was a nice guy. Helps that he actually has a sense of humour too. Should make for a great year and looking forward to having a knowledgable ball fan call a game. Good luck Jamie.
BallGuy - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 05:46 PM EST (#104582) #
Jamie does sound like a good guy. I liked what he had to say on the Fan about his thoughts of how a game should be called; I think he will do a good job and will be much better than Faulds (of whom I was not a fan). He seems to be fairly intelligent and that mixed with a respect for the game and the television medium should make for very good broadcasts. Lets hope the colour guy is a nice complement.
This is great news!
Best of luck Jamie....or whatever your Bauxite handle is.

Okay, I admit it ... I'm actually Jamie Campbell, and have been working under a pseudonym for two years.

Now the question is, will Named for Hank and Moffatt and the guys leap into a "No, I'M Spartacus" chorus?

But seriously, pending the details of the interview being worked out, Da Box will pass these comments along to me, er, to Jamie. So keep the comments coming!

Wow a lot of broadcaster royalty checking in here. First Dr. Prison Fence, then Carson, now Campbell. I am wondering what his handle is. Time to come out of the closet, Campbell :-)

As someone out West who has no choice but to watch the games on TV (vs live) I am excited. I think Campbell will be great. I also like Candiotti because he talks about what the players might be thinking or trying to do. Sounds basic but I think too many broadcasters forget that we can see the game and keep track of the score on the displayed counters ourselves. They then get caught up in saying what just happened or what the count is. I really enjoy announcers that supplement the picture by providing background, humour and analysis. I think Campbell can do that.

My question for Campbell is if he was a GM, would he draft based on more on tools or on stats (I might add he can be safely answer now that JP says he doesn't read this site anymore ;P) Oh, one other question: What sort of parameters are put on what most announcers can say by their keepers? Say JP in a drunken rage against Pepper Moffat trades Rios for Alex Gonzales from Tampa Bay. Can you say that that this was a "curious" move on the air?
Thomas - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 07:48 PM EST (#104593) #

Confusing signals. He used to include his name in his user profile, but he doesn't any more (or maybe the admins removed it). But if he didn't want people knowing, why draw attention to it on live radio? So I guess it's supposed to be a game. If you must know, you'll be able to figure it out from this hint: he likes the trivia threads. But it's probably best not to reveal it once you know. It would ruin the fun, and he'd have to waste a few minutes changing to another nym.

Confusing signals. He used to include his name in his user profile, but he doesn't any more (or maybe the admins removed it).

It was the latter. We didn't know if he knew that it was visible to everybody, so we temporarily removed it, on the off-chance he didn't want to be accidentally "outed".

He's posted on here quite a few times, though, so I imagine it's not too hard to figure out who he is. :)

Some of the really, really old folks might remember a TV game show called "To Tell the Truth" (I think), which opened with three contestants, each of whom would identify themselves thusly:

I am Jamie Campbell.

No, I am Jamie Campbell.

No, I am Jamie Campbell.

I thought Candiotti was pretty decent in his scattered appearances last year. More work should only make him better.

Ron - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 11:10 PM EST (#104604) #

This is entirely unamusing. I've got a tummyache as it is and now I won't be able to sleep. I trust nobody. I'm quite sure I've just reviewed every profile on the site. I'd now like to know if I'm right. This is the second puzzle I've attempted in as many days where I was afforded no correct answer upon completion and I don't think it's fair. DAMN YOU, CAMPBELL!!! (fist shake)
Nigel_Walkey - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 11:29 PM EST (#104609) #
Not just hearing Murray Eldon, but hearing all of the "sounds of the game".

And they should do a better "mix", i.e. the level of the stadium noises; amplified sounds of the plays; and the announcers. Hearing a 90mph fast ball when you're sitting behind home plate sounds a lot different when you hear it on TV.

Unfortunately, FOX TV has an exclusive with MLB for actual types of shots, and sound treatments, and I don't believe anyone BUT Fox is allowed to use "sounds of the game".

Disagree. Candiotti was a classic case of "good in small doses," IMO. I liked his enthusiasm and positivity, but after awhile he began to be very, very repetitive.

Also, the whole lot of you are acting very strange right now.

Jamie, er, I mean, Fawaz, great little deke there ... now nobody will suspect you!

C'mon guys ...

{{{clearing throat and taking PR spin tone}}}
The managment of Batter's Box can neither confirm nor deny that Jamie Campbell is a registered member of the community and cannot speculate on whether or not he has ever even visited the site. Comments to the contrary by roster members named "Pepper" do not reflect the official policy of the site's management. We know Campbell is aware of Batter's Box because we have contacted him for an interview, and Thomas Ayers, who is expected to conduct the interview, will pass along your questions to him. That is all.

I also heard Jamie Campbell on The Fan 590 yesterday afternoon and was thrilled to hear the plug for Da Box.

What impressed me the most about his comments about battersbox was that he said he comes here to learn - he gave very high praise for the level of baseball knowledge here.

All told, from listening to Jamie yesterday, I think he's going to do an excellent job - I'm actually excited about hearing him do the first games. I was also impressed that he had apparently wanted this job for some time - he kept offering to fill in if Rob Faulds needed a day off, etc.
Chuck - Saturday, March 05 2005 @ 01:14 PM EST (#104650) #
My advice to Jamie would be simple: just relax and be yourself.

I'm sure there will be a strong temptation to immediately establish credibility by dazzling viewers with knowledge and panache. But that won't be necessary. The incredible error in judgement that was the Faulds experiment means that the bar is awfully low for a newcomer. I fully expect Jamie to be highly competent and that we will be easily won over by said competence, with his personality being revealed to us over time. No need for the Sorkian repartee that is the modus operandi of the sports desk crew (where it's suited). It's too long a season for that to not grow wearisome to hear from the broadcast booth.

And as for homerun catch-phrases... ugh. Do broadcasters really need them? Aren't they a kitschy throwback? Well, that's what I think. What do you think about that?
gv27 - Saturday, March 05 2005 @ 07:07 PM EST (#104703) #
I told Mick I wouldn't do this, but you people are far too KIND! My name is Jamie Campbell, and I am honoured to be welcomed by people who contribute to Batter's Box.

In communication with Mick recently, I told him I didn't want to be "outed" because I didn't want anyone to flower their opinions. That is still the case. I have thick skin, believe me, and would greatly appreciate honest feedback from regulars at Da Box. I take immense enjoyment from reading opinions, essays, and anecdotes posted here. Those who contribute are obviously knowledgeable, passionate baseball fans. And if you are the people who will be watching most of our broadcasts on Sportsnet, then I would rather hear what you like and dislike, instead of assuming I already know.

I don't know how often I will actually be able to answer some of your concerns, so if you don't hear back, please don't think I'm an arrogant, uncaring punk. As well, if you're at the ballpark, and I'm on the field, grab my attention and introduce yourself.

I've already absorbed some of your ideas. Someone suggested they wanted to hear Murray Eldon from time to time. I couldn't agree more - one of my finest childhood pleasures was listening to Murray introduced Ralph Garr of the White Sox! You can bet I'll shut up the odd time to allow that wonderful voice sneak into our broadcast.

I firmly believe respect for the game in essential to any broadcaster, and this game earned my respect decades ago. I'll make many mistakes, but know it's not for a lack of preparation or love of the game.

Thanks again for your kind words. One other thing that many of you don't know; Bud Selig is a regular contributor under the pseudonym "Mick Doherty".

You see, Jamie Campbell is easily flammable, like wood. Thus, Jamie Campbell is made of wood. Wood floats in water. So do ducks. Thus, if this man weighs the same as a duck, he's Jamie Campbell.

The homerun call in question was "Big bang baby, crash, crash, crash." It's a line from a Stone Temple Pilots song. Obviously pre-planned, but I thought it was cool and funny. It wouldn't have worked if he used it twice, though.

TSN announced today that they've committed to 65 games over the next 2 seasons (42 in 2005, 23 in 2006). This is terrible news for us West Coasters who are now saddled with Rod Black and Pat Tabler, since we don't have the option of tuning in to Tom and Jerry (other than Gameday Audio I suppose).

Campbell can rest assured that he'll be a million times more enjoyable to listen to than Rod Black.

My wish is to get some continuity. I'd prefer one colour commentator eventually. I heard on sportsnetnews that Candioti, Mulliniks, Fletcher, Tabler and one other whose name eludes me are all at some point going to be alongside Campbell.

I guess its an expirement by the network for this season and then they'll pick one or something...

But anyhow, I need some stability :)...

Ah yes, and Mr Campbell I do hope that your broadcast pay tribute to the individually fashioned 'k' signs. Faulds and Cerutti would do so but the TSN folks never acknowledged them.

Looks like you'll get continuity. According to the Star, Tabler gets 40+ games at Sportsnet, and also 40+ at TSN.

The other three guys are working far fewer games. Fletcher is only working nine.

Question for Mr. Campbell:

I believe I read in an article about you that you're a big Dan Shulman fan (as am I). One of the things I liked best about Shulman is the way he makes his colour commentator better by drawing the colour guy's playing experience out of him and into the broadcast. Is this something that you're going to try to do?

Without fail, Matthew E. One of the great things about baseball - for me, at least - is that you can watch it for almost three decades (as I have) and never truely understand it entirely. The complexities of the game help make it so attractive to the curious mind. I will do my best to draw on the expertise of the analyst, figuring no question is a dumb question. I hope we can make it interesting for you, Matthew E!
