A nice interview with Jesse Barfield by Scott Radley of the Hamilton Spectator.

Radley, who for some bizarre reason has been given a regular sports column in my hometown newspaper (he displays about as much sports knowledge as Rod Black, and he's in lov with himself to boot), actually does a nice job here... although, like everyone else in the Torstar chain, he's down on the current Jays.

Jesse sounds like he's excited by the development of his son Josh Barfield who is a second baseman in the Padres' system. Josh is a terrific prospect, who only just turned 20 before Chirstmas and has a very bright future. Hitting .306 and playing a key defensive position, in regular-season A-ball at 19 betokens a serious MLB prospect. He led the Midwest League in hits! There is talk of moving him to third base, and if he inherited anything of the gun his dad had, it would probably be a good move for him.

Barfield, back in those heady days when I was falling in love with the Jays, was a great favourite of mine. Nice to see that he's a happy ex-player.

Barfield became my favourite Jay in 1985; he took a while to mature as a hitter, but his arm was always worth the price of admission. In the haze of selective memory, I recall him throwing mostly knee-high strikes to third and home from the deepest RF corner; he didn't need to rely on one-hoppers.

Craig continues to amaze, finding baseball information in such unlikely corners of the globe as Corpus Christi and Hamilton.
