The unbeaten Toronto Blue Jays allowed Hideki "Godzilla" Matsui to go 3-3 and hit his second HR of the young Grapefruit League season, but prevailed 9-8 over the New York Yankees this afternoon in Tampa. Here's the AP game report, and the box score from ESPN.

Vernon Wells was the hitting hero for the good guys; 2-for-3 with a bases-loaded triple and 4 RBI. Mike Colangelo got another hit; he's playing like a guy who knows he has an opportunity. The Jays left several regulars at home, but the Yanks started what looked like an opening day lineup. Starter Mark Hendrickson made it three Toronto hurlers in a row to hold the opposition scoreless through two innings, allowing just one hit. Several of the bullpen candidates got in some work today, and longshot Pasqual Coco, possibly in the trade showcase role, has two spring saves already. Tomorrow at 1:00, March Madness continues, as the Pirates visit Dunedin.

ESPN is quick with the results, but MLB has the best reports. Here is Spencer Fordin with a detailed look at Hendrickson's outing and Delgado's tender knee. Carlos Tosca employed coach-speak, describing his southpaw as having "a lot of moving parts" -- a delivery that needs to get smoother. Elsewhere on the Official Site, Fordin's daily recap, and the box score in a table format.

A BB reader who was at the game reports via e-mail that Aquilino Lopez pitched better than his line suggests: "The two hits off him were an infield single and a fly to short center that Vernon should probably have caught."

Lopez, who annoyed the Mariners by aging five years one day, was a shrewd claim by the Jays. Our eyewitness says his slider and fastball are both very good, and he might be mixing in a splitter. He wasn't wild, just missed the corners on a lot of close calls. The reviews on Doug Creek and Cliff Politte weren't as good, but both are very hard throwers, who probably just need more innings than a finesse guy to improve their control. Politte seemed to get more accurate last year with regular work. John-Ford Griffin went 0-2, but we're told, just missed a HR by getting slightly under one.
