There's no asterisk beside this honour. Voting for the Hall of Fame's prestigious Ford C. Frick Award, "presented annually to a broadcaster for major contributions to the game of baseball," is open to the public for the first time. Fans will select three of the 10 nominees on the final ballot, and you can vote once per day until December 1, selecting up to three candidates.

Tom Cheek and Jerry Howarth are on the ballot, which is restricted to active or retired broadcasters with at least 10 years of continuous service. So Dan Shulman and Buck Martinez aren't there yet, but Dave Van Horne, Don Chevrier and even (gasp) Fergie Olver are on the long list, which features a brief biography of each candidate. I wish there was a way to vote for Tom and Jerry as a partnership; it seems unthinkable to split them up, but I'd also like to mention Van Horne on my ballot. Remember, every vote against Tim McCarver and Joe Morgan counts.

I'm definitely voting for Jon Miller, who deserves to join the previous recipients including Mel Allen, Red Barber, Ernie Harwell, Vin Scully and other legends. Bob Uecker was last year's winner. Remember, every vote against Tim McCarver and Joe Morgan counts.

Remember folks, every vote against Tim McCarver and Joe Morgan counts.

By the way, I voted for Van Horne, Cheek, and Miller. Coach and I think like twins sometimes.

And remember that every vote against Tim McCarver and Joe Morgan counts.

So don't forget... vote against Tim McCarver and Joe Morgan. Every vote counts.

I've expressed my feelings on this subject on enough occasions, and I thought we reached an uneasy consensus that Joe Morgan, the sloppy and occasionally hostile columnist, should be treated differently from Joe Morgan, the insightful and perceptive in-game analyst.

At least the pleasant (when on-air) Morgan should be painted with a different brush than the self-aggrandizing McCarver.

FERGIE OLVER: 16 years, all with the Blue Jays (1981-1996), and retired … This former minor league outfielder and native of Canada spent his entire broadcasting career with the Blue Jays … After his minor league career was over, returned to Western Canada to play for Saskatoon/Medicine Hat in the semi-pro Western Baseball League … Started working in radio and television in the Moose Jaw/Regina area and in 1969 came east to CFCF-TV in Montreal … Moved to CFTO-TV in Toronto and stayed for 15 years before resigning in 1984.

Argh.

I voted for Miller, Jerry Howarth and (in a burst of even greater sentimentality) Tony Kubek. But the sad fact is that Tim McCarver is going to be a first-ballot fan favourite.

If coining phrases like "What do you think about that" doesn't get me nominated, nothing will.

Now back to the game. Inside for strike one.

Speaking of Fauldsy, when can we expect an announcement on his predecessor? It was a given that he's not coming back right?

"HOW ABOUT THOSE BLUE JAYS"
Gotta love the swarmy Fergie Olver.

Does he get any votes for co-hosting "Just Like Mom" with his wife, Catherine Swing. You da man, Fergie!

Swarmy or smarmy?

I notice George Kell is on the list, along with Al Kaline. They have to be leading the "Most Home Runs by a Broadcasting Team" category, but for ex-players, they were surprisingly good announcers. Kell in particular had a terrific voice, and when he called a home run -- "There's a long drahve to deep raht field" -- you knew it was gone. Tigers fans were beyond fortunate, hearing Ernie Harwell on the radio and George & Al on TV.

Ohhhh man I bet that would be horrible. Just thinking about the old "why do they call it a hit and run? I think it should be called a run and hit. I am going to call it a run and hit from now on"
and
"Nick Johnson looks just like Babe Ruth, what do you think John?"
makes me want to slit my ankles.

Geez, that's a lot of names.

I considered Joe Buck, but I want to give him a couple more years first...

Cheeky, of course.

Why is Don Chevrier on this ballot?

Tommy Hutton...a great broadcaster, but not quite as deserving as some.

Apparently Dave Niehaus has 'only missed 66' of the Mariners' 4000+ games...if he gets in, nobody at MLB will mention the M's cousins, and Tom Cheek, will they?

Dave Van Horne was my second pick...

Why do they only say 'A Canadian network'? It's REALLY annoying.

Jim Hunter gets my third vote.
_miVulgar - Thursday, November 06 2003 @ 05:35 PM EST (#86442) #
Jerry's nasaly voice and Wally Cleaver approach makes me want to headbutt him.

Tom's OK.

Patiently waiting for Dan and Buck...

Dave Van Horne was my first pick followed by Tony Kubek, Tom and Jerry. Speaking of Hall of Famers here is a funny story about Legendary Ty Cobb.

Ty Cobb was a 10-time league batting champion whose lifetime batting
average was .366. When he was 70 years old, a reporter asked him how
he might do against the current pitchers of the day. Cobb replied that he
thought he could bat about .290. The reporter remarked, "Your lifetime
average was much higher than that. So, must think the pitching is a lot
better now than what you faced in the prime of your career ?"
Cobb glared at the reporter, "For god's sake man. I'm 70 years old.
Do you think I should hit .366 ?"

That reminds me of another story...a wire service clip accidentily showed the same starting and relief pitcher in a major league game, and a broadcaster (I forget who it was) said, 'Well folks, in the game in San Diego, it looks like Terry Fulton has relieved himself on the mound...'

Ryan, that definitiely sounds like a Jerry Colemanism. As perhaps the only Batters Box reader from Connecticut, I voted for three voices that I know: Ned Martin, Gary Cohen, and Joe Castiglione.

I like Joe Morgan as an analyst on TV/radio (ESPN).

I find Joe Buck is often annoying on Fox (though sometimes I wonder if announcer problems are more indicative of the demands of whoever they report to than of the announcers themselves).

Tony Kubek was the best Jays analyst ever. I think he credited Tom McKee (as a producer) with improving the broadcasts more than the viewers would ever know. (I've heard that McKee was a really entertaining announcer himself back in the early Jays days, but I don't remember him.)

Jeff, I've heard that story told about everyone from Ted Willaims to Babe Ruth to Willie Mays, etc. I'm not sure who really said it, if anyone did.

Hahahaha... Manchester Primaries.

Why didn't they just call them the Manchester Mancs? That way they could play against the Liverpool Scousers. Those would be great names for sports teams. Really build up the regional rivalries. :)

The Blue Jays AA affiliate will be known as the Manchester Primaries.

I suppose it could've been stupider ... they could've been the Manchester Swamp Primaries or the Manchester Primary Cats. Oy gevalt.

Here are ten better names for that team:

1. Manchester Guardians
2. Manchester Divided
3. Manchester McGlocktons
4. Manchester Alive!
5. Manchester Hooligans
6. Manchester Pollution
7. Manchester Festers
8. Manchester Skychiefs
9. Manchester Anythings
10. Manchester Blue Jays

Any team from a city with an English name like "Manchester" should be called "The Nine" unless there's an obvious alternative.

"The Manchester Nine" would be a great name for a team.

Or if they wanted to be really cool they could have a name like:

Manchester Buzzcocks
Manchester Joy Division
Manchester Morrisseys

Atleast they didn't pick one of those awful cute 90's names like Ice Dogs, or Mud Pirates, or Fish Candy.

"The officials could not release the logo for the Primaries, but they revealed that the team colors will be red, blue, and yellow."

Mike
_Spicol - Friday, November 07 2003 @ 09:31 AM EST (#86452) #
"I am proud to be a Primary."

Doesn't exactly roll off of the tongue does it?

How about the Manchester You Knighted? Wait, no, that's stupider than Primaries.

How about the Manchester Men? How about the Manchester Batmen, affiliated with DC or not, in reference to to both the animal and the people swinging the sticks. It's baseball, it's flying rodents, it's fun for all ages.

"The Manchester Nine" would be a great name for a team.

Chevy, Kubek (ah the nostalgia) and Miller.

So, I was reading Chevy's bio, and some things surprised me:

- I thought when he left the Jays broadcasts, he went to Miami to work for the Marlins...

- Was he really the voice of the Senators at one point? Admitedly, I've only been in Ottawa since late '96, but for my whole time here, Sens play-by-play has been done (primarily) by Dean Brown (one of my favourite sports voices of all time).

Cheers,
Paul

The Manchester Morrisseys would have been a great name. They'd have plenty on music to play when the team was slumping.

Of course, the Manchester Smiths rolls off the tongue a bit better. Then again many bands from the Madchester scene would have made a great team nickname. How about the...

Manchester Stone Roses
Manchester Happy Mondays
Manchester New Order
Manchester Primal Scream
Manchester Charlatans (if not the Smiths, then this would make the best name)

The ballpark could be called The Oasis (what else?)
