The Jays come home after a heartwrenching loss to Kansas City for four pivotal games against Boston. The Red Sox can't be feeling too good about themselves, having lost two of three at home to Cleveland and failing to gain ground on New York and Baltimore. Toronto sits six games behind Boston going into the series.

Game Summaries: Robert Falkoff gloomily notes “Bullpen woes persist, Jays fall late,” Dick Kaegel offers Kansas City’s cheerier perspective: “KC streaking after rally in ninth,” the Globe proffers the AP story “Royals snatch win after Jays collapse,” the Star’s Geoff Baker watches the “Jays head home after tough loss,” and the Sun’s Mike Ganter notes a less-than-pleased Terry Adams as the “Blue Jays bite the dust.

Strained ham: Robert Falkoff opines on DL’ed Chris Woodward, Justin Speier’s elbow and Carlos Delgado’s slump.

It don't come easy: Shi Davidi of the Canadian Press discusses the Jays’ tough upcoming schedule, with series against Boston, Minnesota, Boston again, Anaheim and “the surging Texas Rangers.” Toronto won’t play a team with a losing record until the last day of the month.

Everybody’s got an opinion: the Sun’s Bob Elliott says “this four-games series against Boston is make-or-break time for Toronto” in the unfortunately titled “Jays need to pull up their Sox.” Fellow Sunner Mike Rutsey concurs in “Red Sox loom large.

Mulligan:Lopez anxious for second try:” the Sun’s Mike Ganter discusses the return of Aquilino Lopez and the troubles with his burgeoning repertoire.

Frankie goes to TO: Toronto acquired infielder Frank Menechino from Oakland for future considerations. Menechino had cleared waivers after being optioned to AAA Sacramento.

And Frankie gets a friend: Toronto has also acquired infielder G.J. Raymundo from Texas for future considerations.

Menenchino? Is this the band aid solution for Woody? I was definitely hoping to see Russ Adams and his left handed bat become available for a cuppa joe. I don't know about this one.

I don't really see how Menechino helps much. If the problem is that Gomez isn't an everyday shortstop, then what's the point of acquiring a guy who's neither an everyday player or a shortstop? What does Menechino offer over, say, Stubby Clapp?

I can understand not wanting to promote Adams yet, but there don't seem to be many options available.

HIJACK

Who is the best baseball player never to write an autobiography or have a biography written about him? And a second question, who is a baseball player you'd really like to read a biography on?

Funny, as soon as I saw "Michael N" I immediately thought "Nakamura" :)

Anyhow, I find myself agreeing -- the Menechino trade solves nothing.

In the wake of the Woodward injury, we need a dependable SS, preferably a righthanded one.

We already have a bunch of 2B on the roster: Hudson, Clark, and Berg.

Brian Roberts is the obvious solution here, but Baltimore has said (a) he's not available and (b) will charge a hefty price if they do decide to trade him.

At this stage, I wouldn't mind seeing a good field no hit SS like John McDonald or Jack Wilson in a Jays uni. Though Wilson looks suspiciously like he may have figured out how to hit this year.

Are there any decent minor league veterans floating around AAA?
_Doom Service - Thursday, May 13 2004 @ 10:59 AM EDT (#65952) #
At least Menenchino arrives with the suitable A's pedigree that all Jays replacement level acquisitions seem to need.

I don't think he'll ever be one of Fifteen Keys to victory or anything. Fifteen days of aid is more like it.

The ChiSox recently outrighted to Charlotte former Rangers SS of the Future Kelly Dransfeldt. Nice glove, never hit like some thought he would.

I didn't think there would be anybody, but really there's a surprisig number of candidates that I think would have been a better fit than Menechino, who I really don't think can play much shortstop. Kelly Dransfeldt is in the White Sox organization. Luis Ordaz (he really is a better hitter than he's shown in MLB) is in Tampa's. Danny Klassen is the shortstop in Toldeo, I think the Tigers would let him go to Toronto. Elvis Pena is actually the utility infielder in Colorado Springs, but he's a patient hitter and he'd be worth trying out... you could probably get him for free.

Realistically, none of these guys is any better (certainly none are more promising) than Jorge Sequea. Maybe Antonio Perez of the Dodgers, but DePodesta might not want to part with him, it's hard to say.

There are other guys who can handle the defensive aspect, but just can't hit at all, like Jorge Velandia or Wilson Valdez. I'd rather have Menechino than those type of guys. Felix Martinez, the former D-Ray, just skirts this group.
_Keith Talent - Thursday, May 13 2004 @ 11:23 AM EDT (#65956) #
I think Rick Leach's autobiography would be pretty cool, especially if co-written with Rance Mullinicks as the straight-man. I've been cooking an idea for some time about putting together a book about 'the naughty Jays' of the eighties.

This is the guy I was wondering about, and had heard his name mentioned as a possible call-up. Any particular reason why he was overlooked?

Nice that Mick and I could come up with Kelly Dransfeldt independently...

I'd read George Bell's autobiography, as long as he told me to kiss his royal purple behind on the dedication page or something.

Maybe it was because I was a kid when I watched these guys, but I have a stronger affinity for those 80s Jays that just couldn't get over the hump - Bell, Barfield, Moseby, Fernandez, Stieb, (never trusted Flanagan or Clancy) - than I do with the World Champion teams with their ringers (the ringers being: Henderson, Winfield, Cone, Morris, Molitor).

Felix "Drop Kick" Martinez? No thanks :)

Klassen can hit, but he's a bit of a defensive liability. And lord knows we have enough of that on the left side of the infield already.

When it comes to SS, I prefer defense over offense. Any minor league SS veterans that can hit are pretty well guaranteed to be terrible fielders. Otherwise, they would be in the majors...
_Mick - Thursday, May 13 2004 @ 11:48 AM EDT (#65963) #
Incidentally, I don't know if a trade could be worked out, but the Yankees actually have a gold-glove-leve shortstop playing third base for them.

In all seriousness, though, another name that comes to mind is Erick Almonte. I'd probably want Almonte over Dransfeldt, but the latter would come much cheaper.
Gerry - Thursday, May 13 2004 @ 11:54 AM EDT (#65964) #
Menechino has played two or three games at SS for the A's in the last three years. The A's had a shortstop who, I believe, had the longest consecutive games played streak at the start of the year.

So some people look and say I have not seen Menechino play SS so he must not be any good there.

I say, he was blocked by Tejada, he was the A's backup, JP knows the A's system, JP is an excellent judge of talent, so I believe he can play backup SS until proven otherwise.
_Keith Talent - Thursday, May 13 2004 @ 12:03 PM EDT (#65965) #
I used to love it back in the 80s when Tony Kubek on Blue Jays telecasts would constantly refer to San Pedro de Macaros of the Dominican Republic as:

"a breeding-ground for fine, young shortstops."

My childhood imagination conjured up a chain-link fenced kennel where small Dominican boys would be peppered with ground balls and were trained to pick them off the sandlots with hands of glass.

I'd like to read a "Manny Lee" biography. During his time with the Jays he received virtually no ink all. Eight years with Toronto and he had ONE article in Scorebook magazine. I think it would be interesting.

re: Hinske

After seeing the replay this morning, I was really surprised Hinske wasn't guarding the line against the righthanded Sweeney.

Did the Jays' coaching staff screw up there?

Allright, I'm going to say Menechino starts at SS on Friday. Not today because of the Gomez karma against Schilling, but I think we'll see if he can handle SS on Friday against Lowe. I'm not convinced he can, but the point about being stuck behind Tejada is a good one. I'm still convinced there are better finds out there, but Kelly Dransfeldt is not one of them. I have a beef with him. He suckered me into believing he was a real prospect once, and I've never forgiven him.

Will Carroll's latest at BP included the following at the beginning.

Back from Toronto and one of the best book signings we had all year. Thanks to Indigo and everyone who attended, with a special thanks to the guys who run battersbox.ca. The constitutional through Toronto's sunny streets with Craig Burley was among the highlights of my trip. The best part of this job is the people I get to know.

Where's the love?

A 2B with a .395 OBP vs lefties over the last 3 years (251 ABs) ain't too shabby given O-Dog's record vs the southpaws...

QUESTION

Does anyone know when the roof is scheduled to be open?
It would be GREAT to have it open for the BoSox series this weekend.
I'm going to Sunday's game - my RoyBoy bobblehead and I would much rather sit in the sun than in the mausoleum the Dome is when closed.
_alsiem - Thursday, May 13 2004 @ 02:37 PM EDT (#65976) #
I think the Dome will be open tonight. The CBC site does not list any chance of rain and the evening low is 17. Friday/Saturday has some chance of rain. Sun, has a high of 18, sunny.

It seem like tonight would be prime.

Hudson's 273/333/500 line vs LHP, albeit in just 44 AB, has earned him, at least for now, the right to play every day. It may be a fluke, but let's at least find out for sure.

That said, this is the same player that many were hoping would just stop batting right handed altogether (and still might, come season's end).

If you want to help the team and send out a wake-up call, maybe do a little platooning at 3B.

I hate to say it, but it's quite possible that the Dome will still be closed tonight if there's a likelihood of rain tomorrow -- the first opening of the season breaks all of the weather seals, so it's nowhere near as waterproof afterwards. They want to get past as much of the rainy season as possible before crackin' 'er open.

I remember complaining for two weeks last year that the weather had been gorgeous before they finally opened the lid.

Like I said, though, I will be overjoyed to be wrong.
_Smirnoff - Thursday, May 13 2004 @ 03:30 PM EDT (#65984) #

Close Robert, they like to run the roof a few times when no one is looking to make sure everything is running smoothly. Even minor problems can look bad in front of thousands of customers.
