The first two games of the interleague series between Los Angeles and Toronto have seen masterful pitching performances from Jays starters Ted Lilly and Miguel Batista. Tonight, Josh Towers tries to continue that run against a Dodger squad in dire need of some offence. Lefty Kaz Ishii takes the mound for LA, which means Frank Menechino leads off and plays second base. Eric Hinske sits in favour of Chris Gomez, and Frank Catalanotto grabs some bench while Reed Johnson and Alex Rios man the corner outfield spots. Josh Phelps is back at DH, batting 7th -- but at least he's ahead of Howie (Home Run) Clark.

at least [Phelps is] ahead of Howie (Home Run) Clark.

Only because Clark is lefthanded, not because Phelps is more important to the team's future or anything.
_Cristian - Thursday, June 10 2004 @ 06:48 PM EDT (#58846) #
The Jays are outsmarting themselves by sitting guys just because they bat left-handed. Ishii has horrible control and the guys that should be playing are those with good batting eyes.
_Ron - Thursday, June 10 2004 @ 06:49 PM EDT (#58847) #
I'll say it now to get it out of the way...

BERG STRIKES AGAIN!!!!!!

Considering Clark is swinging the hot power stroke it's strange he's not playing.

BTW the Yanks won again.
_Jobu - Thursday, June 10 2004 @ 07:03 PM EDT (#58848) #
I never thought I'd say this, but im really upset that Clark was benched...

Catalanatto, Hinske and Clark on the bench while Berg, Gomez, Phelps and Rios are starting? Lefty or not, that ain't right.
_NDG - Thursday, June 10 2004 @ 07:16 PM EDT (#58851) #
Also knowing the Dodgers speed, Cash should have started tonight.
_Nigel - Thursday, June 10 2004 @ 07:18 PM EDT (#58852) #
This is a good way to end a winning streak. Ugly defense.
_Jobu - Thursday, June 10 2004 @ 07:18 PM EDT (#58853) #
Also knowing the Dodgers speed, Cash should have started tonight.

as evidenced several times before the first out.... yeesh.

Wow, this isn't a fun start.

2-0 Dodgers on some bad throws.

Hi guys, is there any place i can get a stream of this game over the internet?

Does Tosca pick names out of a hat for the line-up? Why the F**k isn't Clark playing first?
_Ryan Lind - Thursday, June 10 2004 @ 07:26 PM EDT (#58857) #
Clark never plays against lefties...he's 1-for-10 in his career.
_Jobu - Thursday, June 10 2004 @ 07:27 PM EDT (#58858) #
check thegamelive.com Mr. Bell.

egh... lazy first inning AB's by the Jays.
_Andrew Ward - Thursday, June 10 2004 @ 07:29 PM EDT (#58859) #
This is excellent, the first batter walks so the next three are out swinging at the first or second pitch. Batten down the hatches, guys.
_Berg Blows - Thursday, June 10 2004 @ 07:46 PM EDT (#58860) #
If this was slow-pitch, that hit to third base would've been mishandled, and Berg would've been safely on first!
I think he should be traded to the NAPA Auto Parts team in my Slow-Pitch league. They might trade some of their Miller Genuine Draft. Fair trade.

COMN for a internet broadcast of the game.

I don't ever want to see Berg in the lineup again. How smart can JP be if he keeps letting the guy go out there! It's not like he's even some young guy that may improve...he did the same uselessness with the Marlines beforehand.
How did we get him, anyways?

man, towers rules
_Gwyn - Thursday, June 10 2004 @ 07:50 PM EDT (#58863) #
I'm starting to think benching Towers in the BBFL might have been the way to go

Welcome to Syracuse Josh!
_Loveshack - Thursday, June 10 2004 @ 07:57 PM EDT (#58865) #
On the plus side, there's now a good chance we'll see Gagne tonight.
_gid - Thursday, June 10 2004 @ 08:03 PM EDT (#58866) #
Towers is done for tonight, and maybe for good. Didn't he say something a few days ago about "I'm not pitching for the Jays; I'm pitching for the other 29 teams"? Putting a man on for revenge is just stupid. He's got a bad attitude. I wouldn't be surprised to see him let go. Give Bush a chance. (err, David Bush, I mean :-))
_Jonathan - Thursday, June 10 2004 @ 08:07 PM EDT (#58867) #
There's little doubt they will hump him after today. That already gaudy WHIP got a lot worse today and there's a host of pitchers about to come off the DL. Good riddance.
_Loveshack - Thursday, June 10 2004 @ 08:11 PM EDT (#58868) #

Huh? "The Big Show" is in the broadcast booth on Sportsnet. What's with that.

And immediately Wells goes yard.
_Daryn - Thursday, June 10 2004 @ 08:23 PM EDT (#58872) #
The Big Show is cool enough, but those guys are falling all over themselves talking about his size... enough already..

Tabler just said, "Oh my gosh, look at that.".. brilliant.. we can't see him... he should be on Radio!

I guess the game is too boring for them to talk about
_Daryn - Thursday, June 10 2004 @ 08:24 PM EDT (#58873) #
P.S. I have carried Beltre for 4 years on my keeper team... this year I cut him... I had Encarnacion last year too...
_Ryan Lind - Thursday, June 10 2004 @ 08:27 PM EDT (#58874) #
I'm getting annoyed with them too Daryn. These announcers did the same thing yesterday in regards to Jose Lima's singing. Mentioned it over and over and over as if it's even interesting.

Not to harp on negatives, but it's really disappointing that the Jays have only managed one walk against Ishii. I hope the Jays don't make me feel bad for benching Ishii on my fantasy team.
_Gwyn - Thursday, June 10 2004 @ 08:28 PM EDT (#58875) #
It's amusing that the Big Show can off the cuff come up with a better home run call than 'What do you think about that'
_Ron - Thursday, June 10 2004 @ 08:33 PM EDT (#58876) #
Actually when Faulds says WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THAT ... I have been thinking about it.....
_H.R. - Thursday, June 10 2004 @ 08:50 PM EDT (#58877) #
Is it only me? Can you guys hear the irritating, retarded girls that keep screaming and shrieking? Thank god I'm not at that game. It's bad enough listening to it on the broadcast. Hopefully somebody hits a well-placed liner at one of them.
_Ron - Thursday, June 10 2004 @ 08:58 PM EDT (#58878) #
Ishii should be arrested because he's abusing the Jays tonight
_Daryn - Thursday, June 10 2004 @ 09:01 PM EDT (#58879) #

_Ryan Lind - Thursday, June 10 2004 @ 09:03 PM EDT (#58882) #
Ugh, now the announcers are going on and on about Izturis.

I'm sorry to keep whining about them, but it seems like they just pick a subject out of a hat and beat it absolutely to death. Shawn Green, Jose Lima's singing, Big Show's size, Cesar Izturis, you name it.
_Fawaz K - Thursday, June 10 2004 @ 09:08 PM EDT (#58883) #

Gagne's heating - I hope they decide to give him some work. That or the Jays score 6 off the guy they send out instead.

_Ryan Lind - Thursday, June 10 2004 @ 09:24 PM EDT (#58888) #
Here's a link for ya, Keith.

They don't have the exact quote though, it just says:

"Towers was also quoted in Syracuse as saying he was no longer pitching for the Jays but for the other 29 teams in the majors."

I'd love to say Gagne's streak is overrated. But living through TO's bullpen in the early part of this season, I'll tip my hat. How about our bullpen recently? Pretty sweet. Gotta like the starters as well, we'll see about Hentgen.
_Bryan501 - Thursday, June 10 2004 @ 09:30 PM EDT (#58891) #
no its not.
Towers is one of the few jays with a little competitive spirit left. well, for now he's a jay. i think tonight he may have earned a one way trip to syracuse. but he's right. he never had a chance with the jays this year, so he's gotta go out and earn a spot with another team.
if delgado had an attitude like towers, maybe he'd actually help the team win rather than just pad his own stats. and maybe he'd charge the freakin mound once in a while, for g*odd's sake, why doesn't that phat A$$ stick up for himself. And further to that, towers is the only jays pitcher who defends his batters.
_Loveshack - Thursday, June 10 2004 @ 09:30 PM EDT (#58892) #
Catalanatto pinch hitting. Little late Id say, one out left in the ballgame.

I knew Towers had an edge, but I thought it was a good, competitive edge. He's in his late twenties now, right? I guess he's feeling his age, that it has to happen now for him or not at all. I laughed earlier this year when Baltimore was in town, Towers was pitching to Tejada with a man on third. Tejada popped up, sac fly, and Towers just screamed: FUCK! Tejada was pissed, like: 'Who do you think you are?'

Maybe I was wrong. Maybe Towers is just a dick. Tejada is an ultra-touchy one though. I didn't see any sexual gesture from Derek Lowe in last year's playoffs. I did see one Tejada walk home from third in Boston, getting tagged out, costing his team the series win. Tejada's a bonehead.

The most vile player in baseball: Sammy Sosa

I actually hate it when players charge the mound after getting brushed back or nailed...somehow in the attempt to act macho, they come off looking pretty whiny (at least to me)

_Frank - Thursday, June 10 2004 @ 10:37 PM EDT (#58898) #
Actually, yes, I do. Miller is File's best friend on the team. But sadly, I am not allowed to post it. And did anyone see the trainer out there looking at Lightenburg???............hmmmmmmm

_Ryan Lind - Thursday, June 10 2004 @ 11:42 PM EDT (#58902) #
I think Frank expected us all to be super-impressed that he knows Bob File, and when we weren't, he kinda got upset. :-

Oh well, thanks for stopping by anyway, Frank.

Gentlemen, please refrain from baiting Frank or anybody else. Nobody wins in a flame war.

File did have a nice outing tonight.
_R Billie - Friday, June 11 2004 @ 02:28 AM EDT (#58904) #
Towers is one of the few jays with a little competitive spirit left.

It really doesn't matter to me how much competitive spirit a guy has if he hands out homeruns to opposing batters like candy. Josh lost his job this year because Justin Miller was a better pitcher. Period. The only reason he has a job again is because Justin Miller and Roy Halladay got hurt in close proximity.

I like Josh but his stuff is fringy in the majors. He can have success some of the time but outings like last night will happen just as often. He's fine as a fifth starter but it takes results or at least the promise of good results to keep a job in the majors.
_R Billie - Friday, June 11 2004 @ 02:35 AM EDT (#58905) #
I'll also add that Josh seems to have a lot of pride for a guy that has produced a lot of very uneven results in the majors. Perhaps if he dialed down the intensity a few notches he could better understand the limitations of his game and not give up so many big innings. Pitching angry doesn't necessarily equate to pitching well.
