Are left to die on the diamond
In the stands the home crowd scatters
For the turnstiles

After surrendering a ghastly nineteen runs Thursday, Toronto allowed just one run on eight hits Friday night. Eight hits? Colour me unimpressed. After all, just last night...

Detroit one-hit Arizona.
Boston two-hit Philadelphia.
Tampa Bay two-hit Florida.
Texas three-hit Houston.
Florida three-hit Tampa Bay (and lost).
Baltimore four-hit Atlanta.
Anaheim four-hit Los Angeles.
Arizona four-hit Detroit (and lost).
Seattle four-hit San Diego (and lost).
AAA Oklahoma's Nick Regilio tossed 8.1 no-hit innings.

Shi Davidi describes how Towers and company held MLB's worst offence in check, and in another story mentions that both Toronto and Montreal were at least ten games over .500 when they initiated last year's Battle of Canada. MLB.com's Spencer Fordin quotes Carlos Tosca employing the "162 games in a season," "win each series," and "timely hitting" cliches in the space of four sentences. Ebby Calvin LaLoosh would be proud.

Spencer Fordin's Notes column discusses yesterday's players-only meeting. Carlos Tosca says that Kerry Ligtenberg is almost ready, Valerio de los Santos is not, and Justin Miller's hammy is still on the tender side. The Sun's Mike Rutsey and The Star's Geoff Baker also talk the talk, while Richard Griffin wonders about the lack of at-bats for Chris Woodward, Kevin Cash, and Josh Phelps: "The 26-year-old Cash, despite one of the AL's top percentages of throwing out runners, has guided Jays pitchers to a 5.39 ERA." Okay.

Excellent ballgame last night, especially compared to the slow-pitch debacle on Thursday. It’s always fun to sit with Moffatt and Hannah.

I’ve been hanging around the Dome a lot this week -- not that I’m complaining -- so there hasn't been much time for blogging. Today, Robert and I will be sitting down before the game with TV statistician Scott Carson, the "third man" on Jays telecasts, and watching him work from up in the booth. Carson, who also writes a column on Sportsnet.ca, is doing an interactive interview with Box readers; he’s agreed to answer your questions in the thread, which we hope to have posted by next Wednesday.

So there's not much time to chat, but I do want to make a couple of Public Service Announcements:

The Jays will be honouring Athens-bound Canadian Olympians today in pregame ceremonies, and you can meet the athletes outside the Dome beforehand. Along with the Lady Jays and local media personalities, they will be serving Coke Floats. The proceeds from the sales of the floats ($2 each) and a portion of the day's ticket sales will be donated to the Canadian Olympic Excellence Fund. Get there early and do your patriotic bit for the national team by scarfing down some pop and ice cream.

Also, if you’re heading down to the game today or tomorrow, remember to bring some non-perishable food items and/or make a cash donation to help the Lady Jays "strike out hunger" -- it’s their 19th annual food drive in support of the Daily Bread Food Bank.

Still in promo mode, there’s an upcoming Bauxite celebration you won’t want to miss:

Two weeks from today, on July 10, everyone is invited to join us in welcoming Rob Bradford, author of Chasing Steinbrenner, to Toronto. It will be a great afternoon for baseball fans -- lunch at Alice Fazooli’s, featuring a Q & A and book signing, followed by the Jays-Angels game. Meet Rob, eat pizza, talk baseball, then lend your voice to the Cheer Club -- it’s hard to have more fun than that on a Saturday afternoon. As soon as we know the exact prices, we’ll post a thread and ask you to RSVP, but mark it on your calendar now.

Good one, Scott. If I wasn't going to the game, I'd like nothing better than to spend a day on the beach with Neil.

A good Griffin column today, but:

When asked directly when the formerly dynamic duo [Phelps and Woodward] might get back in the lineup, Tosca said tersely: "When I put them back in the lineup."

Minutes later, the GM was asked the same question as he hustled down the tunnel towards the clubhouse. He shrugged and said: "Ask the manager, it's his decision."

[...]
Just because the manager and GM agree doesn't make a decision right.

I don't think JP agreed, based on that quote. But if JP does agree with benching Woody and Phelps, it's bad. Phelps can't get his swing back by watching Howie Clark DH and Woodward can't help my fantasy team by watching Chris Gomez play SS.

Oh, and are the Jays going to monitor how their AAA team fares against Buffalo's ace starter Grant Lee?

I hope someone with a better grasp on hitting mechanics can shed some light on this for me. Purely aesthetically, Phelps' swing reminds me of Paul Konerko; a player with an infuriating ability to go long stretches without any success. Konerko obviously has a track record to justify his spot in the line-up, but if it is something with these guys that makes them streaky, isn't it worth it for the Jays to keep Phelps in the line-up and accept that he's going to struggle annually but also go through torrid spells (he hasn't had the opportunity to put one of those together this season, but he did last season and everyone remembers when he broke in)?

On the pre-game Wilner just asked Sparky what he thought of the nickname "Sparky" and he said in typical Reed fashion "I like it, as long as I can keep driving in runs and produce offence when we need it i'm happy. Im not a guy whose going to hit alot of homeruns so I do what I can".

This guy friggen rules. Now we wait for Wilner to ask him about "Mr. Clutch" ;)

Cat goes on the DL, and Kerry Ligtenberg returns.

Why do they keep putting outfielders on the DL an bringing up relievers to promote them? Who do we have in the pen now: Frasor, Chulk, File, Adams, Speier, Nakamura, Lightenberg, Peterson...

Why do we have 8 relievers, 6 middle-infielders and two outfielders on the roster? I like J.P., but what on earth is he doing?
