Batista throws seven strong, Menechino and Johnson go long, and Montreal falls to 24 below .500.

Summaries: From MLB.com Spencer Fordin, the Sun's Mike Rutsey, and the Star's Geoff Baker.

Injuries: Frank Catalanotto finally joins the DL, replaced by Kerry Ligtenberg. Liggy makes for an awkward left fielder, I imagine.

Notes: Injuries force Toronto to carry 12 hitters and 13 pitchers. Can you, the fan, devise a more well-rounded roster?

Griffin opines on the long, slow, sad decline of the Expos.

Elsewhere in the AL East, Baltimore gave Ray Miller his old job back, and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays became the first team ever to achieve a winning record after being 18 games below .500 at some point of the season. Tampa Bay also is the only franshise to win thirteen consecutive interleague games. Good for them.

Outside the division, the Athletics lose Hudson and Harden on the same day, Texas wins their eighth straight, and Arizona loses their eighth straight.

Why not File down, Pond up? That way we have a 3rd outfielder, at least.

Does the options thing apply to File? Would he have to clear waivers?

The problem with the roster is a shortage of outfielders after Cat's and Wells' injuries. Running down the list of possibilities, none is really satisfactory:

-Gross' injury prevents him playing the OF
-Pond's OF defence is simply unacceptable
-Benard is injured
-Noah Hall was ineffective at triple A
-Anthony Sanders has just arrived

One possibility in this desperate situation is Justin Singleton. His hitting has improved during the last month, and his defence in CF is apparently excellent. He's got some pop. You certainly don't want to play him every day, but you can use him in a number of roles. And honestly, if worse comes to worse, I'm of the view that a Johnson, Singleton, Rios outfield would outperform a Berg, Johnson, Rios outfield.

I believe this is his third (last) option year so he can be sent down without having to be waived. Does anyone know if he was on the 40-man roster at any time last year? If so, then he's out of options:
2001 - first option year
2002 - second option year
2003 - might be last option year
2004 - option year if 2003 wasn't

I suggested Pond because he's the best option without clearing a 40-man spot. Who would be dropped if Singleton came up? (I know, very unlikely, but still...) From what I heard on the radio, Singleton's quite good with the glove...at the very least, he's a better CF than Makiel Jova or Ty Godwin.
