In geometric order

And the far unlit unknown

Welcome to your Canada Day edition of Jays Roundup.

  1. I was all ready to say something clever about the Rays and Jays trading shutouts but then Eric Hinske goes and ruins it for me. Oh, well, my fantasy team needed the RBIs. To read other clever things about the Jays and Rays see Anthony Gagliano's "Jays stifled by Brazelton, Rays", Paul C. Smith's "Rays end June on winning note", Mike Rutsey's "Towers tumbles", Larry Millson's "Toronto's woes continue" and Mark Zwolinski's "Faulty Towers and rubber bats". A Fawlty Towers reference! I love the episode where Basil keeps talking about World War II to a German tourist who is getting sick of hearing about it:

German: "Will you stop mentioning the war?"

      Basil: " You started it."

German: " We did not start it."

Basil: " Yes you did, you invaded Poland..."

    Classic stuff!

  2. Fordin Notes (by Anthony Gagliano) on Hentgen's demotion to the bullpen and Delgado's rehab. The Hentgen story is quite popular today; Larry Millson has more details about it in "Hentgen dropped to bullpen". Still no word on who will pitch Friday's game, though Bauxites have been throwing the name David Bush around a lot lately. I have a feeling it may end up being Nakamura and a cast of thousands. The AP story "Hentgen dropped from rotation" disagrees stating "The Blue Jays plan to call up a minor league pitcher to take Hentgen's spot in the rotation Friday against Montreal in Puerto Rico. The move is expected to be announced Thursday." We'll just have to wait and see!

  3. TODAY'S GAME STARTS AT 2:15PM EST. Just wanted to make sure you didn't miss it. It should be a good one: The Jays are sending up the 6-5 Miguel Batista, while the Rays counter with the 5-5 Lefty Lurch Hendrickson. Anthony Gagliano has a game preview.

Daily Diversion: Library and Archives Canada. Am I the only one who gets the sense that most Canadians know very little about the history of our country?

Yeah, you'd think it was a holiday or something. :-)

most Canadians know very little about the history of our country

Mike, I can't believe you doubt how well-versed we are in our history. Paul Revere must be spinning in his grave....

Nice sweat! You win 50 million points. You could have gotten more if you identified the name of the song as Subdivisions. Anyhow, you also win a strange octopus picture, and a cuttlefish picture to be given later:

Paul Revere must be spinning in his grave....

Hey, I just think it's important to realize that if Wellington hadn't defeated the Kaiser in the Battle of Iwo Jima, we'd all be speaking Mexican now!

Are you sure that picture is 'work friendly'?

I thought it was. I'll let sweat decide. He can either have the picture, or choose this shiny medal:

I'll leave it up to him. You guys can leave suggestions.

Anybody who wants to learn more about Canadian history without getting bored could do worse than reading something by Will Ferguson (just his nonfiction; ignore the novel). He's a wonderful writer; funny and reverent as appropriate.

Did anyone else see J-Zone this week? If not I thought it would interest you guys to know that the "We miss you, Tom" sign made one of the highlight packages. As well, Batista apparently is some sort of Alcatraz historian (on top of everything else), and knows everything there is to know about it,gave a tour of the Rock. In one of the funnier moments, he said that if he was pitching to Bonds in the Alcatraz yard, that he would bean him. To quote Batista himself: "what are they going to do, suspend me?"

"Subdivisions:
In the high school halls
In the shopping malls
conform or be cast out..."

What better band to quote than RUSH on Canada Day. It reminds me of the day that I had the privlidge of sitting next to Geddy Lee in the "In The Action" seats. He kept score in his trusty Cooper scorebook: How Canadian is that!!! A very nice guy too!

As much as I am sure he is enjoying touring this summer, he probably misses attending Jays games at SkyDome.

Happy Canada Day from an American friend.

Speaking of J-Zone, I attended both the Tampa Bay and Montreal series last week and by Sunday, I was able to quote the show word by word. If I see Cabbie swing and miss one more time, I'll scream!!!

Will Ferguson (just his nonfiction; ignore the novel)

Proving that we are all very different on this planet, I much prefer his fiction.

Still, a two-way endorsement for Will Ferguson on Canada Day.

Even better is when two German tourists want to rent a car (this is going from memory, as I could not find transcripts on-line):

Tourist: Do you speak German?

Basil: A little; I get by.

Tourist: Wir wollen ein autometer.

Basil, Yes... that's a little tricky. Could you repeat?

Tourist: Wir ...

Basil: Yes ...

Tourist Wollen ...

Basil: Yes ...

Tourist: Ein Autometer.

Basil: Let's see ... wollen, wollen - volunteer. Meat. Oh I see. You're volunteering to go and get meat. Not necessary - ve have meat here in ze building (Basil makes animal noises).

Did anyone see Nomar's "throwing error" he made last night? As someone who played alot of firstbase(untill the last couple years) I know that's a play that needs to be made by the firstbaseman. I've gone through full seasons without missing a shorthopper in the dirt.

Your AL Win Shares Above Average leaders as of June 25, 2004 courtesy of the Hardball Times: Mike Young, Ivan Rodriguez, Alex Rodriguez and Vladimir Guerrero.

There's a stat that's working. It gives you your 4 first half MVP candidates, with no idiosyncratic choices.

Mike Young took a couple of years to develop, looked like a weak-hitting second baseman for a while, but he's really come on. Would look real nice at SS for the Jays right now.

Because it's Canada Day I'll refrain from mentioning that Rush sucks.
