Sunday, August 15 is the deadline for that big deal that will push you over the top, get you into the playoffs or escape relegation.

It was a relatively uneventful week in the standings with no really lopsided scores; good news for those of us who like our positions. My Toronto Walrus beat Garces_not_on_roids 8-4 to remain 9.5 games in front, as second-place AGF defeated the Moscow Rats by the same margin. There were no changes among the next four clubs, all of whom won by 7-5 or 6-5 scores. Baird Brain and the SABR Magicians each moved up a notch.

Although much remains to be decided, it appears we'll be saying goodbye to Jick's Rays, and the Springfield Isotopes are also in trouble, facing a brutal schedule down the stretch including three of the top six teams. One thing we haven't considered in terms of relegation and promotion rules is what happens if an owner drops out of the league. It doesn't seem right to jump someone from the waiting list or even the Leftovers up to the Alomar division. I propose a postseason roll call to ensure that all owners intend to return, and we need to discuss what happens when there's an opening.

With four weeks to go, I'm playing the teams in 11th, 13th, 19th and 20th place, with a combination of narrow wins and splits probably good enough to clinch a first-round bye. There's no doubt I've been lucky — in the draft, in strength of schedule and in avoiding catastrophic injuries. My next opponent, the Birds, hit an intimidating .333/.424/.620 this week, but I like my chances to pick up a few pitching points.

While content to stand pat, I can spare a SP, an everyday OF (in descending order of what I'd want in return: Lawton, Crisp, Sanchez, McCracken, Terrero) and Ryan Madson, eligible to return soon from the sprained pinky that put him on the DL. Billy Wagner isn't untouchable; he's a keeper I'd consider moving for a closer who isn't as good but is healthier right now. Carlos Delgado is also available, but only for an equivalent hitter (i.e. a keeper) at another position. Let the last-minute trade talks begin!

Week 18 was a spectacular disaster for the Good Sports. Although I'd prepared myself for a tough week, losing 9-3 to a hard charging competitor, especially in the manner that we did, is tough to take. The Edmonton Deceptions didn't even have that good a week, they just did well taking advantage of a pathetic opponent. Offensively, we hit 216/274/311 for the week (FOR THE WEEK!), which must be some kind of record for futility. Mid-week, I actually thought I could sweep the pitching cats after the Deceptions ran out a series of horrible fifth starters in an attempt to win IP and wins by brute force. After this, I had a seemingly insurmontable leed in the pitching rate stats, so I picked up my own collection of bad starters for the weekend. Incredibly, my starters were just as bad. Jeff Fassero gave up 10 runs and 15 W+H in 3 innings. Paul Abbot had a 2/9 SO/BB ratio. In the end, I was nudged out in WHIP and SO/BB, and I didn't even manage to take the wins category. I wonder if I was being lured into a trap all along - boy that Cristian is devious.

Bonds: Justin Morneau hit a bunch of homeruns. Youkilis also had an impressive Sunday, though in my frustration I didn't even bother to swap him into the lineup for Burroughs.
Leaders: Clayton 3, Ford 3, Bellhorn 2, Belliard 2, Podsednik 2, Morneau 2, Piazza 1, Johnson 1, Payton 1, Sanchez 1

Hawpe: He was horrible, but the selection of Nick Johnson is mostly just a reflection of my increasing exasperation with him.
Leaders: Scutaro 3, Clayton 2.333, Piazza 2.333, Hawpe 2, Everyone Who Played on Sunday 2, Payton 1.333, Johnson 1, Segui 1, Franco 1, Daubach 1

Schimidt: A great start from Kevin Brown earns him his first Schmidt.
Leaders: Schmidt 7, Clemens 3.5, Urbina 1.5, Kolb 1.5, Frasor 1.5, The Bullpen Collectively 1, Brown 1, Cordero 0.5, Wilson 0.5

Ligtenberg: After I type the names of the vile Jeff Fassero, and the lecherous Paul Abbott, I intend to wash my hands immediately.
Leaders: Ligtenberg 3, Wilson 2, Clemens 2, Urbina 2, Halladay 2, Halama 1, Field 1, Correia 1, Osborne 1, Schmidt 1, Frasor 1, Fassero 0.5, Abbott 0.5

A little bit of reshuffling this week in Barfield.

I just realized this week that the top 3 finishers in the *regular season* moved onto the Alomar division. I thought it was the top 3 after the playoffs. After finding that out my team tanked and dropped from 4th to 7th (or perhaps my luck, and lack of pitching, is running out).

A choke job by the Archivists pitching staff turned a 10-1 lead on Saturday into a narrow 7-5 win over the TMG Eh's.

Bonds : Gary Sheffield does it again. Sheff was crucial in four category wins (R, SB, AVG, OBP) for AA; nine runs scored, six RBI, two stolen bases, and .375/.483/.750. He narrowly beat out Mark Loretta, who hit .375/.407/.875.

Neifi : Carlos Lee, with no RBI and just .136 with no extra-base hits. Edgardo Alfonzo managed to turn it on after I benched him, so he is spared the indignity (not that I'm complaining - replacement Eric Munson hit well)

Pedro : When you lose five of six pitching categories, this should be "nobody". But Kelvim Escobar shut down the Royals to the tune of 7 7 0 0 1 9, so he gets the nod. AA almost got a tie in the saves category (curse you, Dustin Hermanson!) thanks to new addition J.J. Putz, our first closer of the year.

Lima : Nate Robertson, with two bad starts.

So, what you're saying is, they grew into their man-strength?

Well, the view from (near) the top was fun while it lasted. Eleven games out of the championship picture, it's probably time to look ahead to next year. On to the week 18 awards!

MVH: It's a little weird to give out a Most Valuable Hitter Award in a week you got swept offensively, but it goes this week to Melvin Mora, who scored five runs, drove in eight, stole a base at hit to a clip of .524/.630/.857.

LVH: Bobby Higginson's .063/.063/.063 line, unblemished by counting stats, takes the prize this week.

MVP: Rodrigo Lopez and Kip Wells split it this week, both winning their starts while compiling impressive ERAs, WHIPs and K/BB ratios.

LVP: Scott Schoenweiss, we hardly knew ye. Thank God. 1.1 innings, an ERA of 60.75, a WHIP of 7.50 and a 1:1 K/BB ratio add up to an LVP.

As we sink towards the lower middle class of the league, the Rats are pleased to announce that anyone on the roster can be had, for a keeper of equivalent or greater future value. So if you see someone you like, ask! There ain't no harm in trying.

Too bad it was wasted against my paltry .349 SLG.

No worries snelljo, I'm sure your guys will grow into their man-strength soon.

My team sucks, but it's nice to see I'm still leading in slugging percentage- reduced to nothing more than a bunch of CI oafs who mash like crazy but hit for peanuts. No awards this week, I'm too depressed.

I'm sure I'm not alone when I say lets get this season the hell over with. There was a slight glimmer of hope when I actually won a week but that seems so long ago now as another crushing defeat is in the books. However, I now see that 5 people alone, no matter how good, can make the entire team win (unless one is Bonds perhaps). On the last minute trades note, Feliz, Endy Chavez (still chuggin along), and rotating staff aces Hampton, Tomko and Redding can all be moved. I'm definatly thinking for next year so keep that in mind, hell, I'll give up all five for a decent keeper, so let me know.

Oh yea, I'm facing Good Sports this week so I'm going to try to play spoiler! (this is where raucous laughter comes up as my team has absolutly no chance)
