The Coach-helmed Toronto Walrus still holds a seven-game lead after a 6-6 tie against Eastern Shore Birds, but all seven teams nearest the Walrus's behind gained ground. Mebion Glyndwyr, Red Mosquitoes and Gashouse Gorillas defeated their foes convincingly with ten wins or more.

The Springfield Isotopes did not climb out of relegation but shrunk the gap between them and the two teams above with a 7-4-1 victory over the SABR Magicians. Jicks Rays are no longer last in the roto standings but unluckily continue to draw out tough performances from the opposition.

This week could define several team's outlooks: 10th-place Baird Brain looks for success against 2nd-place Mebion Glyndwyr, 9th-place Horse Field Hammers will attempt to gain ground on the 4th-place Red Mosquitoes, and the 8th-place Austin Senators' quest for another championship meets the 6th-place Hannibal's Cannibals. The Moscow Rats, on the cusp of the consolation bracket, face a tough battle against the Walrus.

In the Barfield Division, the #2-#5 teams each won between eight and nine games. Slippery Pete, who appears to enjoy first place, shrugged off the challenge by pulverizing the Middleclass Elitists 11-0-1 in a mesmerizing display of man-strength. Pete seems a near lock to achieve Alomar-dom in 2005, and Ghost Man On Third holds a moderate 8.5-game lead over the Edmonton Decepticons. The final advancement spot currently belongs to Good Sports, who must evade several teams on his trail.

Like Alomar, this week's matchups feature several high-ranked teams jockeying for position. 2nd-place Ghost Man plays the 9th-place TMG Eh's, the 3rd-place Good Sports take on the 8th-ranked Monkeymen Cubed, and the 4th-place Edmonton Decepticons try to advance against the 6th-place Homer Jays Simpsons.

The Archivists squeaked out a 6-5-1 win over MonkeymenCubed to hurl themselves into the Consolation playoff places in Barfield.

Bonds : Michael Tucker had a brilliant week and made the difference between success and failure in five categories. Tucker hit anm incredible .524/.565/.905 for the week, with 8 RBI and 6 runs.

Neifi : Todd Walker has disappeared.

Pedro : Since AA only won innings and tied wins, and finished a long way off in the rate categories, it wasn't a good week for the hurlers. But Kelvim Escobar pitched well, getting a win thanks to a 7 6 1 1 2 7 performance.

Lima : Nate Robertson, so nearly the belle of the ball, has turned back into a pumpkin and has an ERA in the gazillions in his last n starts. This time Anaheim tattooed him for 5 9 6 6 2 1.

I'm not kidding about Walker... he entered the last day of the Giants series 10 for his previous 22, with four walks, four doubles and two homers (that's a nifty .909 slugging percentage and .538 OBP for those of you keeping score at home).

Since then, he's batted seven times in nine days. He's not hurt; Dusty has decided he wants Mark Grudzielanek out there, come hell or high water.

The Cubs are 2-5 in those seven games, and have scored less than four runs a game.

Were there any trades made this weekend? My team is only 3.5 games above relegation. Blue Jays, the Bashers know how you feel.

We're #1! We're #1! Whoo-hoo!

Oh, wait, that's in "Strength Of Opposition". Oh well, at least I lead the Excuses standings.

(It makes me think of a comment I once made about the use of "RPI" in college basketball, how ten years from now the student body somewhere is going to pile out on the floor just after the tipoff, celebrating their #1 ranking in Strength of Schedule)

Three weeks to go and my schedule is as favorable as they get. I face each of the three last place teams over this period, so anything less than a playoff berth will be a disappointment. The flip side, of course, is that I'll be facing teams that are like cornered animals, clawing their way to avoid relegation, and looking to play spoiler. Or something like that.

Quick awards:

Bonds: "Big" Ben Broussard: .450/.522/.950 w/ 6R and 11RBI. I stuck with Ben through the tough times this season (.236/.349/.325 in the middle of June), and he's really paid me back the past couple of weeks (as all Jays fans are aware).

Pedro: Kerry Wood: 8 shutout innings, allowed only 4H and 3BB to go along with 7Ks. Too bad pitchers don't count on offense; my Kerry/Dontrelle combo might be unstoppable.

Records:

No new records in Alomar. AGF had the 3rd-best roto performance of the year despite winning "only" 8.5 games. Mebion had the 8th-best roto performance of the year to go with his 11-1-0 effort.

In Barfield, the Middleclass Elitists set the negative record for batting average with a vengeance (.185). Capers tied the mark for worst OBP with .274.

I think I had a chance to set the record for ERA - heading into the weekend I had a little over 30 IP and my staff had only given up 3 or 4 runs. WHIP was miniscule as well. Then I made the brilliant decision to start Ron Villone against the Yankees. 3 IP and 8 runs later, my chance for a record was long gone. I still think it was a defensible choice - I had huge leads in all the pitching rate stats, but both IP and wins were close enough that the Fish Candy could have taken them.

Speaking of Villone, I've had him ever since he was moved back into the starting rotation, with the intention of spot starting him when my staff of aces needs a little extra boost. In that time, he's made 6 starts - 4 quality and 2 disasters - and wouldn't you know it, I've had him benched for 3 of his quality starts and none of the disasters. I don't think the micromanaging is my strong suit.

Bonds - Goes to Bonds. Nifty 1700 OPS and some nice counting stats.
Neifi - sadly goes to Mike Lowell. Craptacular rate stats and NO counting stats. I need him to break out of this slump NOW if I'm going to have any chance to leap up the two spots into the championship playoff bracket.
Pedro - I'm going to give it to Drese (one of my best pickups from the waiver wire) for his 14 IP and 2 wins. Schmidt is a strong honorable mention, for his brilliant shut out of the Pirates.
Lima - I've already discussed Villone. Ugh.

I also made one of the few deadline deals in Alomar, trading Keith Foulke for Derrik Lee. My offence has been really hurting lately, especially in the counting stats - I had traded for Pat Burrell for a little more depth, but of course he's gone, then I lost Adam Everett who had been doing a nice job filling my MI spot. I figured that I've managed to lose the saves matchup 90% of the time with Foulke on my roster, why not lose it the entire rest of the time without him, and try to get someone who can hit. Of course the day the trade goes through, Foulke saves a game for the Moscow Rats, and Lee goes 0-7 for the weekend.

Strangely, for a team with quite a bit of speed up and down the lineup, I didn't get even one steal all week. Two weeks previous, I had 10. Go figure.

Incidentally - Scott, why are you standings slightly different from the ones Yahoo displays? Are you figuring the tie breaker differently? You have the teams with the same winning % inverted in the standings.

Just some sorting I did in a spreadhseet before posting. Doesn't mean anything.

I've got to ask a really dumb and probably obvious question, so please forgive me in advance.

How do I sign up to join the BBFL next year? Is it even possible?

After last week I didn't think I could be any more demoralized by my teams performance. Let that be a lesson not to set expectations as to the limits of how bad your team could possibly be. I now find myself half a game above a team that hasn't been touched since February or March. About 8 weeks ago I thought had an outside shot at a possible playoff spot, now I'm just glad nobody from Barfield is getting relegated this year. No awards the rest of the season now, we need September callups in the worst way.

A short and sweet recap this time. I was away in Toronto most of the week, so I wasn't able to micromanage the Good Sports into oblivion. I came back to find myself with an 8-4 win over the cellar-dwelling Ben's Men. It stops the bleeding and keeps me in the promotion bracket. I'll take it.

Bonds: Nick Johnson climbed out of Frank Robinson's doghouse with a huge slugging week.
Leaders: Clayton 3, Ford 3, Morneau 2, Bellhorn 2, Belliard 2, Podsednik 2, Johnson 2, Piazza 1, Payton 1, Sanchez 1

Hawpe: Ned Yost is apparently becoming as frustrated with Scott Podsednik as I am.
Leaders: Scutaro 3, Clayton 2.333, Piazza 2.333, Hawpe 2, Everyone Who Played on Sunday 2, Payton 1.333, Podsednik 1, Johnson 1, Segui 1, Franco 1, Daubach 1

Schimidt: Who else? Jason Schimdt. Yawn.
Leaders: Schmidt 8, Clemens 3.5, Urbina 1.5, Kolb 1.5, Frasor 1.5, The Bullpen Collectively 1, Brown 1, Cordero 0.5, Wilson 0.5

Ligtenberg: Paul Wilson nearly submarined me in the pitching categories, before he got hurt and thus couldn't do any more damage.
Leaders: Ligtenberg 3, Wilson 3, Clemens 2, Urbina 2, Halladay 2, Halama 1, Field 1, Correia 1, Osborne 1, Schmidt 1, Frasor 1, Fassero 0.5, Abbott 0.5
