Welcome to the inaugural Photo of the Week. Until the season gets going I'll be recycling material from last year, some of which has not yet been seen by anyone but me.

Next year I'm hoping that we'll have enough money in the budget to send me down to Florida for Spring Training to really do this feature right, but in the meantime you're just going to have to deal with leftovers.

Here's Orlando Hudson, from October 3rd of last year:

I'll give you 20 bucks to go to Florida, but you better come back with some sweet Sparky photos...

Hey, I go to Dunedin (Jays Spring Training) every year. I will down there from 3/16 through 3/24 this year. I will be taking in the Indians vs. Jays game on 3/17, and visiting the Minor League camp on 3/18. I be meeting up with many of the guys and hopefully going to dinner. I will have pictures to share!

Thanks for the photos, gentlemen.

It feels a whole lot more like spring training than it did a couple of minutes ago!

I echo the above sentiments.

I'm beginning to get excited. I wish I was away from the snow and in Dunedin badly.

NFH, can you shed some light into the camera/film settings you use for the action shots..

I'm guessing 800 speed film, 1/1000th @ f5.6? What lens length?

Thanks!

Keith Talent will be in Florida next week, in Dunedin once the games start.

This particular image was during a day game, in bright sunlight. The film was NPH 400 in 220 format, the camera was a Pentax 67 and the lens was a 300mm f4. Obviously, there was a fair amount of cropping involved, but I'd rather shoot the larger negative with a shorter lens and have that flexibility to crop (not to mention the fact that the lenses are nicer).

The full image shows the umpire and catcher, and can be seen here:

Forgot: exposure was around 1/500 at f5.6. I started the day at 1/1000 f8, but as the sun moved, the shadows started to become a problem. This was later in the game, I think... At the end I was shooting at 1/500 f4.

Lucky Keith! We hope you'll send us your first-hand thoughts.

Thanks, I'll try to check in. Or, you might catch me on TV the next time they shoot "COPS in Dunedin".

Why is it that I have no problem picturing KT drunk as a skunk, running from the police in his underwear?

You know I'll also be flapping my arms and cawing like the best damn crow you ever heard.

Oh yeah, that was in my head, too.
