Batter's Box Interactive Magazine Batter's Box Interactive Magazine Batter's Box Interactive Magazine
It's almost July, which means it's almost time to complain and moan about who gets selected to go to the All-Star Game.

The fan voting wraps up in a couple of days, which will provide the eight starters for each team. The player vote is supposed to add another 23 players for each side, and a final fan vote is supposed to choose the 32nd man. And every team is supposed to be represented? I think so - and it's not that hard, anyway.

There is always going to be a dispute as to whether we are choosing real genuine all-stars (Mr Barry Bonds, anyone?), or guys who happened to get hot for a few weeks (I'm looking at you, Matt Holliday). I don't think anybody knows what the standard is supposed to be. Whatever lets me fill out the roster, I suppose.

Anyway, here is a possible AL team (fan-voted starters in bold):

Baltimore - Miguel Tejada
Boston - Jason Varitek, David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Curt Schilling, Jon Papelbon
Chicago - Paul Konerko, Jim Thome, Jose Contreras, Mark Buehrle, Bobby Jenks
Cleveland - Travis Hafner
Detroit - Ivan Rodriguez, Kenny Rogers
Kansas City - Mark Grudzielanek
Los Angeles - Vladimir Guerrero
Minnesota - Joe Mauer, Johan Santana
New York - Robinson Cano, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Johnny Damon, Mariano Rivera
Oakland - Barry Zito
Seattle - Ichiro Suzuki
Tampa Bay - Carl Crawford, Scott Kazmir
Texas - Hank Blalock
Toronto - Troy Glaus, Vernon Wells, Roy Halladay, B.J. Ryan

The Yankees could end up with yet another starter if Johnny Damon overtakes Ichiro Suzuki, who pretty well has to go to the game anyway if Seattle is going to be represented. And injuries will play their usual role - Robinson Cano just went on the DL, and may or may not be back in time.

By position, the roster has three catchers (Varitek, Rodriguez, Mauer); four 1b/DH (Ortiz, Konerko, Thome, Hafner); two 2b (Cano, Grudzielanek); three 3b (Rodriguez, Blalock, Glaus); two shortstops (Jeter, Tejada); six outfielders (Ramirez, Guerrero, Suzuki, Damon, Wells, Crawford) and twelve pitchers (Schilling, Papelbon, Contreras, Buehrle, Jenks, Rogers, Santana, Rivera, Zito, Kazmir, Halladay, Ryan)

Find places, if you can, for Justin Verlander, Tadahito Iguchi, Mike Mussina, Brian Roberts, Nick Swisher, Brad Wilkerson or anyone else that you think is particularly worthy. Who would you bump? And don't leave us with just two catchers, or one backup middle infielder, either....

A Possible NL Team

Arizona - Johnny Estrada, Brandon Webb
Atlanta - Andruw Jones
Chicago - Mike Barrett
Cincinnati - Ken Griffey, Bronson Arroyo
Colorado - Matt Holliday
Florida - Miguel Cabrera, Josh Johnson
Houston - Lance Berkman, Roy Oswalt
Los Angeles - Derek Lowe, Brad Penny
Milwaukee - Carlos Lee, Chris Capuano
New York - Paul LoDuca, David Wright, Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran, Tom Glavine
Philadelphia - Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Tom Gordon
Pittsburgh - Jason Bay
San Diego - Trevor Hoffmann
San Francisco - Omar Vizquel, Jason Schmidt
St. Louis - Albert Pujols, Scott Rolen, Chris Carpenter
Washington - Jose Vidro, Alfonso Soriano

The NL team has three catchers (LoDuca, Estrada, Barrett); three 1b (Pujols, Berkman, Howard); two 2b (Utley, Vidro); three 3b (Wright, Cabrera, Rolen); two shortstops (Reyes, Vizquel) seven outfielders (Beltran, Soriano, Bay, Jones, Griffey, Lee, Holliday) and twelve pitchers (Webb, Arroyo, Johnson, Oswalt, Lowe, Penny, Capuano, Glavine, Gordon, Hoffmann, Schmidt, Carpenter)

Find spots, if you can, for Derrek Lee, Barry Bonds, Jimmy Rollins, Morgan Ensberg, Norman Garciaparra, Craig Biggio, Bobby Abreu.

And on behalf of everyone associated with Da Box, best wishes for a full and speedy recovery to Peter Gammons. I am one of the few Bauxites old enough to remember when Gammons was the only indispensable baseball writer around. Unless you were there, you can have no idea how essential Gammons was, back in those prehistoric days before the Internet, before the Bill James Baseball Abstract, when player stats appeared once a week in the newspaper and generally didn't even tell you how many times a hitter had walked. Come back soon.

Hard to believe that I-Rod or Varitek are more deserving than Victor Martinez.  Rios has been better than Vlad, Damon, and Crawford.  And hasn't Lowell been a lot better than Blalock?

Gotta be a spot for Pedro.  Maybe Johnson could wait his turn.  Certainly Jeff Kent has been a lot better than Vidro.

I am one of the few Bauxites old enough to remember when Gammons was the only indispensable baseball writer around.

Tom Boswell, Roger Angell and Leonard Koppett were also indispensable during these years (late 80s), but Gammons was more frequentlly in print.

Incidentally, Gammons' debut album as a musician is scheduled to be released within weeks.

Seriously, Mags, how much do you hate the AL West? Four teams in the division, and you have all four sending just one player each to the All-Star Game? Seven teams in the entire league get that distinction on your list, and more than half are in the West?

From the Texas viewpoint, I certainly  agree that Blalock deserves to go, but the best candidate on the team is none other than Little Sarge, Gary Matthews Jr. -- he's hitting .332 and leading the team in OPS at .923, and oh by the way playing some serious Gold Glove-caliber defense. (He certainly would outrank Wilkerson, who you mention in passing.)

You can make a decent argument that  Matthews would be a better candidate for the team than Wells, especially if the other three Jays you list all go. Now, would I rather have Wells on my team than Matthews? Of course. I'm just sayin' ... where's the love for the AL West?

Martinez took a nose dive, but he's still better than Jason V.

However, V is the fans choice so you are stuck with him...and I-Rod is the most natural choice from the Tigers batters.  A team with a record that good needs more than one Rep.

Same for Vlad, you are stuck with him....and even if you weren't, who else on the Angels is worth. the system constrains you.

Now, Blalock, as someone else pointed out, is probably not the best choice on his team - and as for Lowell, one really ought to minimize the total number of Yanks and Red Sox. If the fans hadn't stuck us with 6 out of 8 starters from those two teams it might be different.

P.S. if we are worried about the Doc's K rate what are they thinking in Chicago about Mark Buehrle's? What does the fouth best closer in the AL get as far as an award a pack of rolaids, so why should he be on the all-star team?

Was Magpie not referring to the 70's, when Bill Conlin covered the NL and Gammons the AL in the Sporting News? Bill James' Abstracts would then be self-published in the late 70's and professionally published in the early 80's, triggering a wave of analysis that would cause some of us to forego our now seemingly innocuous Sporting News subscriptions.

I imagine that they'll find room for more than two Tigers. For fun, here are your AL Win Shares leaders. Possible other players who might be chosen include Curtis Granderson, Carlos Guillen, and Ramon Hernandez.  Placido Polanco would make a nice choice to replace Cano.

Why?  The Tigers 2006 success is the resulf of almost everyone playing well, but nobody playing great.....other than Granderson.

Same for Vlad, you are stuck with him....and even if you weren't, who else on the Angels is worth. the system constrains you.

Orlando Cabrera has a higher OPS than Vlad.....and he's the shortstop.

Now, Blalock, as someone else pointed out, is probably not the best choice on his team - and as for Lowell, one really ought to minimize the total number of Yanks and Red Sox. If the fans hadn't stuck us with 6 out of 8 starters from those two teams it might be different.

It's hard not to think that Matthews is a better Texas representative than Blalock.

Guillen has played great.  If anything, Win Shares undersells him.  The one thing the Tigers have done exceptionally well is turn ground balls into outs.  Apportioning credit for that team skill is a bit of an art, but usually the shortstop gets over 1/4 of the credit, and Guillen is by all accounts a fine fielding shortstop.  Add that to his solid all-around offensive performance, and you have an underrated talent.

Huh?

Verlander's 9-4 with a 3.39 ERA isn't "playing great"?  For a 23 year old?

How about Nate Robertson's 8-3 with a 3.14 ERA?

Or Bonderman's 7-4 with a 3.65 ERA at age 24?

Add in the Gambler and that's 4 pitchers in the Top 15 of ERA in the AL.  That's just a sick rotation, defense notwithstanding.

Speaking of sick, to keep Doc healthy for the 2nd half, I selfishly say leave him off the team for one of these guys beyond Rogers.  The next 2 weeks should determine which of the three should go.
