According to reports I've been hearing on the FAN, the plane that hit an apartment building today in New York City was registered to ex-Jay and current Yankee Cory Lidle.

There has been a report that Lidle was the pilot of the plane. I'm going to look for links now, and will add them to the body of the article as I find them. Please contribute links to anything you can find out about this breaking story.

Here is the ESPN story, which says it's sourced from an AP story. Here is the AP story, which is not as conclusive.

ESPN reports that he has died.

Links, please -- let's get as much factual information as we can.  So far all I've heard is that it was his plane and the occupants were killed -- has there been an I.D. or was it discovered that he was the pilot?

This is extremely tragic. People are already hoping it wasn't a suicide and just a terrible accident.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Lidle's family and friends.

This article states that at least one of the two people killed was a member of the Yankees organization. The fact the plane was registered to him seems to indicate that Lidle was killed.

I have CNN on right now.

Lidle's passport was found on the ground outside the crash. The plane was registered to Lidle.

We need to be clear: There has been no reporting that it was actually him in the plane.

The FBI is saying that it was Cory Lidle on the plane.

Bob McCowan confirmed that the plane was registered and that he was on it.

He is also saying that three additional people have been killed, but were no passengers on the plane.

Tragic news. Prayers to his Family

For what it's worth, this clip is from Rotoworld, referencing WFAN and ESPNews, stating that Lidle was actually flying the plane.  I doubt this was a Donnie Moore situation, as most suicides don't put strangers at risk.

Russ Holden is on Rogers Sportsnet right now discussing the aircraft Lidle was on.

He also said that there is an unconfirmed report that a MayDay was called.

You guys beat me to it.  I put a comment in the photo of the day .  When I saw that it was a luxury condo that was hit, I thought of the Yankees and wondered if any of them lived in it. This is very sad.

Are they even allowed to fly with their contracts or with their insurance?

RIP Cory.

I don't mean to nitpick, but Newsday is not reporting that he was indeed on the plane.
Yankees pitcher and registered pilot Cory Lidle was believed to be aboard the small plane that crashed into a Manhattan apartment today

It's very likely that he was on the plane.

Very disturbing and tragic if true.

My thoughts and prayers to Cory Lidle, his family, and friends and to the others who died in this tragedy.

What's also chilling is the fact that today is October 11th.  I hope it's just a coincidence.

NFH,

This is true, however their their headline "Yanks pitcher dies as his plane crashes into building" seems to suggest otherwise. Poor headline on their part - sloppy reading on mine.

So apparently, the Yankees were not happy about Lidle and his flying, because of the whole Munson thing.

scroll down.

"The whole plane has a parachute on it," Lidle told The New York Times. "Ninety-nine percent of pilots that go up never have engine failure, and the 1 percent that do usually land.

"But, if you're up in the air and something goes wrong, you pull that parachute, and the whole plane goes down slowly."

Sigh.

There was a report earlier (via the notoriously scatterbrained and unreliable Bob McCown, but it's still a report) that MLB were considering cancelling tonight's games.  I haven't heard anything additional on that score almost 90 minutes later (and with only 90 minutes to go until game time) so I would suspect that wouldn't happen.  Only one game (the Cards game) was cancelled when Darryl Kile passed away and games were not cancelled when Steve Olin and Tim Crews were killed; on that basis I would expect the games would go ahead tonight, rightly so.

Stay classy, Rotowire. (Snapshot lifted from the Deadspin thread about the accident)

Well, TSN is reporting that the game in NY has been postponed, but are saying that its because of the weather.

Recent NY Times article about Lidle's flying hobby.  It noted that he kept the plane at Teterboro, NJ which is where Lidle took off from today.
