Spring Training nears and roster-filling moves start to come around the majors; just in the last day ...

  • The Marlins signed LF Luis Gonzalez and 3B Dallas McPherson;
  • The Mariners signed OF-1B Brad Wilkerson.

And in the "minor league contract, with an invitation to spring training" category ...

  • The Yankees signed 3B Morgan Ensberg;
  • The Indians signed P Jorge Julio.

A few thoughts ...

Gonazalez and Julio are done; Wilkerson could be a steal; McPherson will probably play a lot, and Ensberg could start at 1B -- not exactly the lineage of Gehrig, Skowron, Chambliss and Mattingly!

Your thoughts? What else you hearing?

Yankees signed 3B Morgan Ensberg

... to be their first baseman vs LHP. Is it just me, or does anyone else find the Yankee first base situation laughable? The team spends a jillion dollars on salaries and, year after year, they simply cannot find a bona fide major league first baseman. There's no reason that this problem should be right up there with cold fusion. The 2008 first base solution appears to be a platoon between two third baseman, Betemit and Ensberg.

On an unrelated matter, Joe Sheehan discusses a different kind of opening day, one that we old Strat players can relate to.

A couple of thoughts come to mind for me as well as Spring Training is about to open ...

Has Ruben Sierra picked a team to try out for yet?  The Mets didn't go to well last year, but it just doesn't feel like baseball without Sierra in the league.

Also, I wonder what the Jays are planning on doing with their AAA outfielders this year.  To me, it seems that Lind, Coats, Matthews, Patterson, and Smith should all be in the running for AAA starting spots.  Lind is the only one that is likely to eventually have a starting role or more in the majors, with the rest likely 4th OFers at best.  Still, it seems to be the only real decisions that will be made this Spring.

I think McPherson could be an absolute steal for the Marlins.  His minor league numbers are astounding - the injury last year set him back a bit, but there is no doubt that this guy has some serious hitting ability.  He'd have been perfect for a backup 3B spot on the Jays.

And Sean Casey to Boston, to replace Hinske. Nice pickup for under $1 million.

As for The Dude, Eric Hinske is 30 and has no club to play for. Who would've thought this day would come so soon?
greenfrog - Friday, February 01 2008 @ 02:31 PM EST (#179615) #

Well, Hinske has lasted for a long time in the majors. He's really only had one good year (2002, when he won the ROY). That five-year contract was great for him but obviously didn't work out for the team. I wonder if the Rockies will regret the Tulowitski deal in five years (I doubt it, but stranger things have happened).

Casey looks like a nice pickup for Boston. His career numbers are very good: 301/366/450. And he's only 32, so a precipitous decline is unlikely.

Hinske signed his long-term contract having just turned 25. Tulowitzki signed his having turned 23. Those two years are a big difference, even if they don't sound like much.

Also, Hinske played a poor defensive third base while Tulowitzki played gold glove caliber shortstop. If Hinske doesn't hit, he has no value. Tulowitzki can let his OPS+ slide well below last year's 108 and still be immensely valuable.

Some might disagree.

Rey Olmedo was claimed on waivers by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The way I see it, Hinske played full-time in 2002 and hit 279/365/481. He had a great rookie season and won the ROY award.

From 2003-07, his numbers were as follows:

243/329/437 (449 AB)

246/312/375 (570 AB)

262/333/430 (477 AB)

271/353/487 (277 AB)

204/317/398 (186 AB)

Hinske rebounded with good numbers in a part-time role with Toronto and Boston in 2006. Apart from his rookie year and his 277 AB in 2006, Hinske was mediocre or very bad during four of the five years of his contract. In evaluating his performance, I think we need to take into account his position (especially since he was primarily a third baseman, where Hinske was never a particularly good defender, although IMO he did improve from terrible to merely below-average.)

Anyway, that's my 2 cents. I liked Hinske a lot in his first year, but could never understand the love for him after that. He just never seemed to be that good, especially for a 3B/1B.

Last year, who made the Blue Jay player cards and posted them here? I looked but couldn't find the old post. Will they make them again?

I think that's the point: many liked him in his first year, and desperately held on hoping he could repeat it a few times. And, at least he had this going for him: no one questioned his dedication, and willingness to try new things. He learned to play OF, took extra fielding practice, etc.. I.e. he wasn't totally self absorbed, didn't think he was the greatest player ever, etc..

I'm starting to worry... the Yankees are starting to make smart moves... that's a little troubling!

They turned down an opportunity to get Santana, signed LaTroy Hawkins, they retained A-Rod...

I think even more scarier is that they've quietly signed some sleepers. Jason Lane has always had power and lately his walks have gone up. If he starts to hit again, he could be threat. Morgan Ensberg took 101 walks a couple of years ago in an injury plagued season(only 387 AB's) and he'sgot enough power to be a legitimate threat.
Then there's Shelley Duncan who can be productive in a platoon, and Wilson Betemit.

Many liked [Hinske] in his first year, and desperately held on hoping he could repeat it a few times...

I think many people expected him to follow the normal development curve of a major league baseball player, and continue his career path to a peak in his late 20s. He hit 285/380/515 in the minors, and had an outstanding age 24 season in the AL - 119 OPS+, 4th in OPS for 3B - 40 points ahead of Troy Glaus.

Then he disappeared. In what should have been his peak years (age 25-30), he broke his hamate bone, he stopped hitting for average or power, couldn't take a walk, and couldn't hit lefties.

I don't think it was desperation to think he'd at least improve on his outstanding rookie season.

I blame it all on the marketing department. He couldn't cope with the attention he was getting after winning ROY.

His goose was cooked the moment he starred in his own commercial. Happens to the best of them.

Maybe, Craig, you're right.  But the Rays' management since the departure of LaMar has been noticeably better on a number of fronts.  They are actually trying to build a team, rather than to simply to possess a disjointed series of talents.  The movement of Upton to the outfield, the acquisition of Bartlett and Garza, and several other moves suggest management that actually has an idea.  Shields has pitched well for a year and a half now.  Sonnanstine had an ugly ERA last year thanks to the defence, but actually pitched OK.  In 2007, the club had no defence and no bullpen, and the two young starters did not (to their credit) totally collapse.  Both the defence and the bullpen figure to be much better in 2008.  A decent environment is one step for the new young arms.

The wild card is the pitching coach. The club changed pitching coaches after 2006, but the new one Jim Hickey recently pleaded no contest to a DUI in October 2007.  Nonetheless, he was retained for 2008.  We'll see how he does with Sonnanstine, Shields (and perhaps) Niemann during the first half of the year.  The only thing I'll say about the Rays pitching coaches at the minor league level is that there have been relatively few arm injuries in the last few years.  That is a good sign.

To claim Olmedo, the Pirates had to designate Sean Burnett. If my recollection of Burnett's at all accurate, he was Gustavo Chacin with an intriguing ceiling. Granted, the potential that motivated Pittsburgh to make him a 1st-rounder in 2000 has surely frayed in step with his arm, but I can think of worse guys to invite to Syracuse.

Reading Jerry Crasnick's piece on Corey Koskie on ESPN this weekend, it's hard not to hope that JP at least inquires about him if/when Koskie's cleared to return. I'm usually loathe to encourage making roster moves on sentimental grounds, but if Corey's swinging and running right by September, I'd be happy to see him land in town as a late addition. Based on Crasnick's article, it's hard to imagine Koskie will ever get back to being his old baseball self, but I'm sure I speak for everyone here in wishing him a thoroughly successful recovery.
MondesiRules - Sunday, February 03 2008 @ 05:45 PM EST (#179663) #
After JP essentially dumped Koskie after one year of a three year contract with Koskie taking a discount instead of signing with the Dodgers, hell would freeze over before Koskie comes back...
TamRa - Sunday, February 03 2008 @ 10:55 PM EST (#179667) #
I dunno...Barajas teaches us not to make such assumptions. Besides, "dumping" Koskie was essentially a favor to him to give him a chance at a starting situation. Koskie might resent the acquisition of Glaus, but he probably welcomed the deal to Milwaukee.

112 games into 2008, Gibby will match Cox for 2nd on the franchise leader board for games managed.

And 85 Wins match him for 2nd on that list too. But only 26 Losses away for 2nd on that less distinguished list. May the games begin.

Yet he'll only reach the halfway point to reach #1 this year for each. We'll have to see at least as twice as much Gibby for him to become #1.
SheldonL - Monday, February 04 2008 @ 12:49 AM EST (#179671) #
MondesiRules, everyone talked about Koskie giving us the hometown discount but in actuality he sucked us dry! We were a team on a very tight budget with only about $5 mil a year for about 3years to spare. The next thing you know, this guy got a deal with an annual salary of about $5.3 mil. J.P really got caught in the chase there with Koskie being Canadian and all... perhaps one of the worse J.P signings.

Meh, I didn't like that Koskie... he looked like he always needed a shave! Hell, I look like that alot... where's that razor?

But I can't blame a guy for trying to strike the deal that will set you anf your family up for life... guys don't get that opportunity very often so you can't blame guys like Koskie or Juan Pierre for signing the ridiculous contracts handed out to them!
