Game Threads Jays at Nationals: Get out the "For Sale" Sign

The wounded Jays limp into Washington for a three game series. The Nationals find themselves one game out of a wild card spot so they will be trying to improve that against the poorly playing Blue Jays.


One of the big Nationals stories is the fate of CJ Abrams. Even though the Nats are one game out of the wild card, rumours suggest that Abrams could be traded. Abrams hit two home runs yesterday and now has seven home runs since the all-star break, more than several teams including the Jays. The stories say the Nats are listening without actively shopping him. If the Nats keep on winning will they stop listening?



SCHEDULE

Monday: Scherzer vs Alvarez

Tuesday: Bieber vs Cavalli

Wednesday: Yesavage vs Littell


Teams who are looking for starting pitching should have scouts in attendance in Washington today and tomorrow with Scherzer and Bieber both in the shop window. Scherzer made one rehab start and it went very well. Can he translate that from AAA to the major leagues? He will have his work cut out for him as the Nationals are the top scoring team in Baseball. They have scored 584 runs compared to 416 for the Jays. The Nats 584 runs is 31 better than the second place Pittsburgh Pirates. On the other hand the Nats 554 runs conceded is the third worst in baseball so the Jays hitters should, in theory, be licking their lips.

We are also one week away from the trade deadline. Will all the trades go down to the wire or will the house cleaning start earlier?

Jays have not won a series against a team that was ahead of them in the standings since taking 2 of 3 from the Pirates back over 2 months ago. Can we break that streak?

Alright here we go. I BOLDLY and STUPIDLY predict the Jays sweep the Nationals and then win 2/3 in their next series. I also predict them to be one of the busiest teams at the deadline, hooking up on a big deal to give up serious prospect capital for a Louis Varland type player (offense or pitcher with half decade of control). They shore up the bullpen and add a big bat while trading away Hoffman, Gimenez and Berrios. The rational works: no other team is willing to send back anything good for the poor Blue Jays players that have been tanking.

How would they convince someone to take on the bad contracts of Berrios or Gimenez you ask? Simple, they trade them away for worse contracts. Think Lindor and his full contract (will get bad at the end) as well as 1-2 NYM bullpen arms for Berrios, Gimenez and a good prospect like Nimmala.

Why the hell would they trade Nimmala to bring in Lindor who turns 33 in November and is coming off his worst season ever? His sprint speed has consistently declined going on ~4 straight seasons now. It is very obvious that he is losing his legs quickly, and this is an athleticism-driven player.

Nimmala could literally help the team in 2027 LOL. For peanuts.

Depending on whether you want to look at BR or FG, Gimenez alone is either worth as much as Lindor this season, or better than him. And he is 27 years old. So what are you even accomplishing here? You're dumbing Nimmala to trade a 27 year old with a bad contract for a 33 year old with an even worse contract, who isn't even playing better than the guy you are dumping?

Zero part of that idea makes any sense unless you believe that Lindor is a show-in to revert to elite performance.
