John Smoltz will undergo season-ending surgery next week.  He's 41 years old, and we may have seen the last of him.

No one actually knows what's wrong with his shoulder (it is hoped that the surgery itself will reveal the problem). Smoltz is still hoping his baseball career is not over, but he's mainly hoping for a better quality of life. He's been finding it difficult to sleep, play with his children, and do routine things around his house.

If it is over, it's been a remarkable run - 210 wins, 154 saves, and effective to the very end (3-2, 2.57 with 36 Ks in 28 IP and an ERA+ of  158 this season.)

No doubt his wife was pushing hard for the surgery.

Can you blame her? According to Smoltz:

A shoulder is like a lower back problem; it puts you in a pretty bad mood. You use your shoulder for everything.

Yeah, I want this guy hanging around the house all day.

I know my wife is pushing for me to have surgery - any surgery, just as long as it results in me doing more routine stuff around the house.

In other news, Vernon is no longer representing the Jays at the Draft.  Instead, he will begin his rehab assignment.
