The affiliates split things right down the middle last night.  Syracuse got an encouraging performance from a recently demoted starter and came away with a walk-off win, New Hampshire battled back from an early deficit only to suffer a walk-off loss, Dunedin held on in a nail-biter, Lansing's offence didn't show up against the first place team in their division and the Gulf Coast Jays split a doubleheader against the team they're chasing for first.   Auburn had the night off.

Syracuse 4 Charlotte 3

Syracuse, NY - The Chiefs booted an early field goal in the first inning as Russ Adams went downtown with a three-run homer off former Jay Tomo Ohka to score a Wayne Lydon walk and a Buck Coats single.  The recently demoted Jesse Litsch made like King Arthur, chopping up the first 11 Knights in order.  Other than two singles in the fourth, Litsch was perfect.   In the sixth, he surrendered a leadoff homer to Javier Colina and three more singles to put the White Sox affiliate to within a run.  Litsch loaded up the bases in the seventh on a walk, single and hit batter but Russ Adams threw out a runner at the plate from second base to help Litsch put up another zero on the scoreboard.

In the eighth, Mike Gosling relieved Litsch and the lefty retired the lone batter he faced before giving way to Jordan De Jong.  De Jong got the next two outs but not before yielding a solo crank to Royce Huffman to tie the game at 3-3.  De Jong would redeem himself with a three-up, three down ninth.  The Chiefs left the bases loaded in the eighth and they loaded up the bases again in the ninth.  Just when it looked like the game was heading into overtime, Danny Sandoval drew a two-out walk against former Jay farmhamd Scott Sauerbeck to bring home a Brian Jeroloman base on balls to literally give the Chiefs a walk-off win.

Boxscore Notes - Jesse Litsch gave up seven hits, walked a man and plunked another over seven strong innings while whiffing four.  He also had a dozen groundball outs........Buck Coats had three of the Chiefs eight hits on 6the night, Wayne Lydon had a double and two walks while Russ Adams had a homer and a walk......Adam Calderone drew a walk and stole a base but is still looking for his first hit at the AAA level.

New Britain 7 New Hampshire 6

New Britain, CT - The Fisher Cats tried to be ``King of the Britains`` but their quest came up short.  The Rock Cats abused former Padre and Pirate Marty McCleary with three doubles, a walk and a J.P. Arencibia passed ball to take a 3-0 lead in the first inning.  The F-Cats responded in the third on a Chris Gutierrez RBI single.  After working a one-hit second and striking out the side in the third, McCleary might`ve wished he stayed in the Korean League as the 33 year-old hurler gave up three walks, a double and a single that led to three runs in the fourth.  37 year-old Jo Matumoto  finally got the last out of the frame.  J.P. Arencibia did throw out a runner at second so the damage could have been worse.

Chris Gutierrez drove in his second run of the night with a sac fly in the fifth, J.P. Arencibia belted a solo shot in the sixth and Kyle Phillips drove home a Travis Snider double to cut New Britain`s lead to 6-4.    Ryan Patterson also went deep to lead off the seventh and Jacob Butler tied the game at 6-6 in the eighth by tripling home pinch runner Ryan Klosterman.

Seth Overbey bailed out Jo Matumoto with two out and two on in the sixth and Daryl Harang bailed out Overbey after a bases-loaded jam in the seventh.  The defence bailed out Harang in the eighth when left fielder David Smith started a 7-2-4-2-5-3 play to cut down a runner trying to score from second.  Harang`s luck ran out when he gave up a bases-loaded, run-scoring single to hand the F-Cats a walk-off loss.

Boxscore Notes - Ryan Patterson had three hits while J.P. Arencibia, Travis Snider and Kyle Phillips had two each as part of the F-Cats 13-hit attack........The four New Hampshire hurlers were torched for 17 hits and 8 walks while striking out just 6.

Dunedin 4 Sarasota 3

Dunedin, FL - Three two-out singles in the first didn`t produce a run as Brad Emaus was cut down at the plate but Matt Liuzza put the D-Jays on the board in the second with a solo homer.  Brian Dopirak doubled the Dunedin lead with a two-bagger to score a Chris Emanuele single in the third while a Matt Liuzza bases-loaded walk and Sean Shoffit RBI single in the fifth lifted Dunedin to a 4-1 lead.

Starter Kenny Rodriguez survived a pair of singles in the first and a triple in the second before setting down the side in order in the third and fourth but two singles, a passed ball, a walk and a hit batter in the fifth led to the Reds first run.  Rodriguez lasted two outs into the sixth but not before giving up another run on a walk and two singles.  Chad Blackwell struck out the lone man he faced to end the inning.   The rehabbing Jeremy Accardo came on in the seventh and he yielded a solo gopher ball  to cut Dunedin`s lead to 4-3.  Celson Polanco worked a one-hit eighth and Connor Falkenbach plunked a hitter and gave up a single to make things exciting before getting the save.

Boxscore Notes - Anthony Hatch had a perfect night with three hits and a walk while Brian Dopirak also contributed three hits.  Chris Emanuele had two safeties......The rehabbing Shannon Stewart was 0-for-3 with a walk while patrolling left field.....Jeremy Accardo gave up a homer and a single to go along with two groundouts and a flyout in his one inning of work.

South Bend 3 Lansing 0

South Bend, IN - The D-Backs affiliate got the only run they needed in the second inning with back to back doubles against Lugnuts lefty Chi-Hung Cheng.  Despite giving up eight hits and two walks, that would be the only run Cheng would give up thanks in large part to Manny Rodriguez.  He started an unconventional 3-2-3 double play to save Cheng`s hide in the fifth.  Cheng was gone after a leadoff walk in the sixth but lefty Edgar Estanga kept the Silver Hawks off the board.  However, Estanga gave up back to back to back doubles that led to a two-run seventh for South Bend.   Michael Barbara retired the final four men he faced but it didn`t matter as the Lugnuts got all of four hits on the evening.

Boxscore Notes - Chi-Hung Cheng had a WHIP of two in his five innings but he did strike out four and got a half-dozen groundouts.......Yohermyn Chavez had two singles while Kevin Ahrens and Justin Jackson had one each.  David Cooper drew the team`s only walk against eight strikeouts.

Auburn - Scheduled Day Off.

Game 1 - GCL Blue Jays 9 GCL Phillies 6 (7 Innings)

Clearwater, FLKyle Gilligan`s two-run double got the G-Jays off on the right foot in the second.  Markus Brisker and Tyler Pastornicky followed with run-scoring base knocks of their own and it was 4-0 for the visitors.  The fightin` Phils fought back with a five-spot in their home half of the second against Scott Gracey, saying good night to the righthander after he hit two batters, uncorked two wild pitches, gave up a two-run double, a run scoring single and two walks.  One of the walks was a run-scoring passed ball and another Antonio Jimenez passed ball capped off the five-run frame.  Lefty Jared Potts mercifully came in to end the bleeding.

The G-Jays matched that outburst with a five-run inning of their own in the fourth.  Balbino Fuenmayor had an RBI double, Antonio Jimenez delivered an RBI single, Tyler Pastornicky had a sac fly and Welinton ``being Welinton`` Ramirez singled home another run to make it 9-4 Jays.  Jared Potts survived a bases loaded scare in the fourth with a double play ball while getting another DP turned behind him in the fifth.  He gave up a two-out double in the sixth and Dustin Antolin allowed the run to score on a triple.  Antolin gave up a walk, double and single before finishing things off.

Boxscore Notes - Welinton Ramirez and Markus Brisker each had a hat trick in the hit column.  Brisker added a stolen base but was caught stealing as well.  Ramirez, Kyle Gilligan and Tyler Pastornicky had two RBI apiece.

Game 2 - GCL Phillies 3 GCL Blue Jays 2 (9 Innings)

Dunedin, FL - Ryan Koch scattered three hits over three shutout frames for the G-Jays but the Phils got to Yorman Mayora in the fourth with a leadoff homer.  The Jays tied it on a two-out double by Balbino Fuenmayor that cashed in a Luis Fernandez single.  They took the lead in the sixth on a leadoff triple by Justin McClanahan and a run-scoring single by Welinton Ramirez.  The lead disappeared in the seventh when Willi Mendez, who relieved Yorman Mayora, uncorked a wild pitch with the bases loaded to give the Phils the tying run.

Lefty Tyler Kelsey relieved Mendez in the ninth and got the first two runs before giving up a single.  Kyle Gilligan relieved Kelsey but gave up a run scoring single to hand the Phils the lead.  The Jays had their chances to at least tie it if not win it when Tyler Pastonicky led off with a single but he was erased on a pickoff.  They proceeded to loaded the bases with two singles and a hit batter but Justin McClanahan popped up and Welinton Ramirez grounded out to end the game.

Boxscore Notes - Luis Fernandez had a three-hit night and added a stolen base while Balbino Fuenmayor had a 2-for-4 night with an RBI........The G-Jays had two pinch-hits off the bats of Bradley McElroy and Tyler Pastornicky......Ryan Koch struck out three without walking a batter in his three innings to lower his ERA to 0.60.

Just wondering, but does anyone know what happened to Russ Adams in June? He went 6-63 that month. How is that even possible? Pitchers hit better than that. So what happened? Was he sick, was he hurt, was he in Mortal Despair? Were his bats cursed, and Jobu would not come?

Aside from that weird spell, whatever it was, he's been about what you'd expect. If you take out June, he's batting .291/.348/.448 with 11 HR in 93 games.

How long do they keep Litsch in AAA?

The_Game - Wednesday, August 06 2008 @ 05:51 AM EDT (#190137) #

Double post? Oops.

One more thing,  I've noticed that Scott Campbell hasn't played in a week or so now. Does anybody here know what the injury is?

One more thing,  I've noticed that Scott Campbell hasn't played in a week or so now. Does anybody here know what the injury is?

According to the Game Notes posted in the media section of the Fisher Cats website, he's been on the DL since 07/30 after being thrown out at home plate in the 9th inning.  So one has to believe it's either a leg injury or wrist injury (i.e. head 1st slide).

Usually Kevin Gray posts updates like that in his Union Leader articles, but I haven't noticed any mention.

If Campbell misses any considerable playing time that's just another unfortunate setback to a promising minor league up & comer (ala Guillermo Quiroz, Robinson Diaz, Ryan Patterson, Aaron Matthews, et al).  The Jays can never seem to catch a break when it comes to the "fluke" injury bug throughout the system :(

"How long do they keep Litsch in AAA?"

Personally, I'd like them to keep running Purcey out there till the end of the year, so his spot should be safe. Richmond deserves at least one more start, and it's counter-productive to yank him from the rotation after one bad showing. So I think the Jays would be best served by letting Litsch finish up in Syracuse, hopefully padding his stats along the way (he's got that nice 4:1 ratio now) so JP can sell high on him this winter. I don't see him fitting in next year, there's Halladay Marcum Purcey (McGowan) and if the team is serious about contending it probably needs to add a FA SP. When you have Romeros and Cecils knocking at the door Jesse Litsch is quite expendable.
Ryan Day - Wednesday, August 06 2008 @ 10:26 AM EDT (#190147) #
What exactly has Jesse Litsch done to rank behind one pitcher who can't get the ball over the plate consistently and one who just had shoulder surgery? Never mind Cecil and Romero, who've combined for three AAA starts between them, with Cecil having his workload carefully monitored.

At this point, Litsch is the most 2nd or 3rd most reliable pitcher available to the Jays in 2009, depending on Marcum's health. He's not likely to be an ace, but he's more likely to be solid and healthy than almost anyone else. If people gave up on other pitchers as quickly as him, neither Halladay nor McGowan would be with the Jays today.

Mike Green - Wednesday, August 06 2008 @ 10:52 AM EDT (#190148) #
Yes. Litsch is 23 years old.  To date, his career ERA is 4.14 (ERA+ of 105).  His K rate rose from 4 to 4.6 in his second year.  His control is very good, such that he can be a very successful pitcher if he gets his K rate up to 5.5 or so.  He handles the running game very well (opponents are 8-9 stealing bases) and he gets ground balls and DPs.  Best of all, it looks like his arm will stand up to 200 innings per season.

Litsch is nowhere near as impressive-looking as Dustin McGowan or A.J. Burnett, but it's not a beauty contest.

BulletJayFan - Wednesday, August 06 2008 @ 11:13 AM EDT (#190149) #

Just wondering, but does anyone know what happened to Russ Adams in June?

I think the 6-63 slump was punctuated by a ridiculous hitless streak of something like 34 at-bats. He had the stroke the whole time, though, and, I believe, ended the streak with a home run in what was almost certainly a losing effort. He really didn't look lost at the plate at any point, though, but it was painful to watch Davis run him out there every day knowing he hadn't gotten a hit in recent memory. Now, of course, he's hitting .389/.450/.639 in his last 10.

Filed under "Further evidence of Adams' connection to the Juvenation Machine" is the fact that he hasn't screwed up second base recently. He's been playing there since Danny Sandoval pulled up lame rounding first a few games ago and has yet to make an egregious error while at the same time actually making a few above average plays. That throw to home last night, for instance. He was pretty miffed about being relegated to the outfield, but I wonder if maybe he hasn't found the cure for Knoblauch disease. I don't believe it, yet, either, though.

#2JBrumfield - Wednesday, August 06 2008 @ 02:24 PM EDT (#190157) #
Speaking of Russ Adams, there's an article on him today from the Syracuse Postsyracuse.com.  Also, here's a link to the video highlights of last night's game at Alliance Bank Stadium.  I can't get over how different the place looks without astroturf.
Magpie - Wednesday, August 06 2008 @ 02:51 PM EDT (#190159) #
So I guess it really was a case of the bats being cursed, and Jobu would not come.
92-93 - Wednesday, August 06 2008 @ 03:53 PM EDT (#190164) #
Yes, Litsch can be good. But once, just once, JP need to sell high on one of his kid arms. Litsch won't make the difference between competing or not next year, (I think the difference between him and whoever you would use to replace him is minimal) so I would seriously consider moving him. But hey, I begged all winter for JP to move one or two of Marcum, Janssen, Litsch, and Downs for some hitting, and none of you agreed with me then, so I didn't expect you to agree with me now. I also thought Chacin should have been moved after his rookie year. I guess I just don't believe in holding on to these arms that at best project as solid third starters when you can be trading them for impact, everyday bats.

If you don't want JP to just sit back and twiddle and his thumbs and pick up every mediocre player made available to him (Scutaro, Inglett, McDonald, Eckstein, Mench, Wilkerson, Stewart) then you are eventually going to need to give up talent somewhere. Litsch can be that talent, and all the selling points you made on him are what you tell the other teams, enticing them to pick up a 23 year old they can control effectively for years. The Jays, with enough arms close enough to the bigs, don't need Jesse Litsch.
Ryan Day - Wednesday, August 06 2008 @ 04:14 PM EDT (#190166) #
Litsch isn't a good candidate to sell high on simply because he's not the sort of talent people drool over. Pitchers like him or Marcum are likely to be undervalued, and people keep trying to write them off at the slightest hint of a struggle.

Besides, "selling high" suggests you know what the future holds, and that's pretty rare in the case of pitchers. If you want to talk about "selling high" opportunities, Ricciardi clearly should have dealt McGowan in the offseason. Or maybe trade Brett Cecil since few pitching prospects - if, in fact, there is such a thing as one -  look good when they get exposed to MLB hitters for the first time.

And yes, the Jays have plenty of arms close to the majors. But I'm not optimistic enough to believe all, or even most, will make a smooth transition. Certainly not as smooth a transition as Litsch did - 104 ERA+ and a 1.330 WHIP over his first 226 innings in the majors.

I will be ecstatic if the Jays can find five starters better than Litsch and make him expendable. I don't see it happening soon, though.
Mike Green - Wednesday, August 06 2008 @ 04:19 PM EDT (#190167) #
Branch Rickey used to have the philosophy that it was better to trade a veteran pitcher one year before he lost it than the year after.  Billy Beane seems to be a believer, too.  The Jays don't really have one who qualifies.
Ryan Day - Wednesday, August 06 2008 @ 04:38 PM EDT (#190169) #
But even Beane doesn't have it down to an exact science. Moving Mulder was definitely a good move, but the Tim Hudson trade doesn't look nearly as good. And with hindsight, one can suggest it would have been best to move Zito after his 2003 season; maybe even after he won the Cy Young - how many pitchers repeat that kind of season?

Anyway, I think Litsch will have more value as a veteran pitcher than he does now. Let him stick around and do his thing for a few years, and likely build a reputation as a guy who "knows how to win."

92-93 - Wednesday, August 06 2008 @ 04:50 PM EDT (#190170) #
but the Tim Hudson trade doesn't look nearly as good.

Dan Meyer did shut down the Jays completely on Monday. :)
Mike Green - Wednesday, August 06 2008 @ 09:33 PM EDT (#190176) #
Brett Cecil pitched very well for the Chiefs today, with his usual assortment of strike outs and ground balls.  Put him in Toronto with an infield of Rolen, McDonald, Hill and Overbay, and he'd be in the right situation.
FisherCatsScribe - Wednesday, August 06 2008 @ 09:52 PM EDT (#190177) #
"Kiwi" went on the 7-day DL with a sore hamstring following that ninth-inning slide into home plate. I expect he'll be ready to go by this weekend, although the team is on the road and haven't heard an update. -- Kevin Gray
FisherCat - Wednesday, August 06 2008 @ 10:08 PM EDT (#190178) #

Thanks for the update on Kiwi Campbell, KG.  Hopefully he can keep the bat going thru Labor Day.

Also just heard JP state on Fan 590's WWJP, that Travis Snider went up to AAA today.

The_Game - Wednesday, August 06 2008 @ 10:17 PM EDT (#190179) #

I don't see why Jesse Litsch would be somebody to sell high on at this point. He seems to be a very durable pitcher capable of throwing 200 innings a season with a 4.00+ ERA at the major league level. He is not the return of Gustavo Chacin.

And Snider to AAA? It looks like they are rushing him a bit. He is still only 20 years old and his stats significantly declined in AA from where they were before.

FisherCat - Wednesday, August 06 2008 @ 10:28 PM EDT (#190180) #

Well more news from JP on the radio that lends to why Snider is going up...

Dopirak is going to AA and I think I heard him say Cooper to A-Dunedin.

In response to him advancing to quickly, I think if you examine Snider's #'s after the 1st month in AA, he really has nothing left to prove against AA level arms.  So let's see what he can do against former MLB and advanced arms that are plentiful in AAA in August.

Tiny Tim continued his amazing run tonight - 3ip 1h 1bb 5k 1gb.
PeteMoss - Wednesday, August 06 2008 @ 11:17 PM EDT (#190182) #
JP also mentioned that Snider, Cecil, Arencibia, etc wouldn't be up in September (not a surprise obviously).  The call-ups would be guys like Litsch and Shannon Stewart.
Ryan Day - Wednesday, August 06 2008 @ 11:26 PM EDT (#190183) #
Snider to AAA seems premature. He's been good, but I'd rather he be dominant. And is there really that much benefit to a few weeks in AAA?

And why, dear god why, must Shannon Stewart return in September? I'd rather see any combination of Patterson, Coats, Lydon, or Adams - at least there's a chance one of those guys might be useful next year.

TamRa - Thursday, August 07 2008 @ 02:07 AM EDT (#190191) #
Wilner said Litsch would be down til September 1.

I figured all the veterans who have major league experience would come up (Listch, Wolfe, Accardo and Tallet - or whoever got sent down if they get activated sooner - Stewart, etc)...and I still think Diaz will get a promotion.
I had figured possible Snider and Jeroloman might, but Jeroloman isn't doing anything at AAA yet with the bat.

As for the others, I have a hunch we might see Cecil, JPA, and Campbell in the AFL
-------------
On the whole matter of "selling high" on Litsch, there's two things there. first, you included Marcum on that list - we'd all be pretty pissed right now if JP had "sold high" on Marcum last winter (BTW, did anyone here Rod Black discussing the fact that Cito says Marcum reminds him  a lot of David Cone?)

The other things is that if you look at his secondary numbers, as any GM would, Litsch was NOT a high value chip last winter. Most everyone even among Jays fans were doubtful of his success this year because of that issue. Now, as it turns out, he greatly improved those ratios in the second half and consiquently, despite his recent demotion, probably has more long-term value now than he had last winter.

But even so, everyone knows he's a bottom of the rotation guy long range, and even if we come up with five better starters next year it's a tremendus luxury - of more value than what you would get for him - to have a "sixth starter" of his ability.

Now, if some moron would give us - just throwing out a name - Elvis Andurus for him....sweet. But consider whether you would do that deal if you were on the other end of it before you criticize JP for failing to get it done.

Chances are what you would actually get for him would be something more like a Ben Brussard or Bobby Keilty type bench player, or a prospect with talent but some sort of issues.

I'd love to be wrong on that point though.

If Ricky Romero can become effective, everyone might have to re-think getting rid of JP ;)
Mike Green - Thursday, August 07 2008 @ 10:12 AM EDT (#190205) #
The Jays are handling Tim Collins well.  He has the stuff to be a starter, but they are being gentle on his young arm.  They did the same with Davis Romero when he was coming up through the system.  It didn't spare him a visit to the surgeon, but I'm still a believer in the approach.
Ryan Day - Thursday, August 07 2008 @ 10:20 AM EDT (#190207) #
As for the others, I have a hunch we might see Cecil, JPA, and Campbell in the AFL

I'd be surprised if Cecil goes - the Jays have been pretty careful about his workload, so I suspect they'll shut him down once Syracuse's season ends.
