I'm not a Phillies fan. Most of you probably aren't either. But this, sadly, is big news ...

Longtime Philadelphia Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas has died at the age of 73. Kalas, who had also filled a voiceover role for NFL Films since 1975, was taken to a hospital after passing out in the broadcast booth before Monday's Philadelphia game against the Washington Nationals. As I posted at BBTF, he did the 7th inning honours at the first game I ever saw at Wrigley Field. While it is sad to hear of his passing, by most (if not all accounts) he was a beloved announcer who had reached legendary status in Philadelphia and beyond. Seems to me a life well-lived. Best wishes to his family, and may he rest in peace

Another sad day in the baseball world.  I guess if there's any consolation, he died in a place he loved to be at - the ballpark.  At least he got to stick around long enough to call the Phillies World Series win and enjoy the opening week festivities before he passed along.

This brings back memories of Tom Cheek's passing.  What a tough day for everyone in the Phillies organization.  It must really be tough on the broadcasting crews as they play the Nationals today.

One of the joys of XM Radio is hearing all the radio broadcasts and I enjoyed listening to him and Bob Uecker, especially.

Condolences to Harry Kalas, his family and friends.

CBS Sports is now reporting that Mark Fidrych, former AL Rookie of the Year, was found dead this afternoon at his farm in Massachusetts.

What a terrible week in the baseball community with the deaths of Adenhart, Kalas and Fidrych. As well, an elderly George Kell recently passed away and the shock of John Brattain's death has not worn off.

That is true, Thomas.  Fidrych had a brief moment in the sun, but what a moment it was.

Fidrych's joy was natural and infectious. And his Monday night game of the week against the Yankees was a doozy.
