Some technical problems prevented me from posting Sunday's minor league update.  Shame for you as I had a really clever headline ready to go.  In any event, to make up for it, here's Monday's action where it seems as though every Jay farmhand had two hits last night.

Las Vegas 13    Fresno 7

The 51s picked up 18 hits, including four homers off the bats of Edwin Encarnacion, J.P. Arencibia and a pair from Adam Calderone.  Seven different 51s had multiple hit games including three for Encarnacion and four singles from Mike McCoy.  Arencibia drove in four runs.

Marc Rzepczynski was shaky but victorious for Las Vegas.  Zep went five and allowed three runs (2 earned) on seven hits while walking four and striking out five.

Reading 8    New Hampshire 3

Yikes, not a good night for Ronald Uviedo.  The former Pirates prospect went a third of an inning and allowed seven runs (four earned) on four hits and a walk.  Oh, and the error that led to those three unearned runs?  Yeah, that was his too.  Tryston Magnuson pitched two and a third, striking out four and allowing but one hit.

Darin Mastroianni was the only FIsher Cat who did much of anything, picking up three hits, including a double, and stealing his 29th base.  Everyone else kinda sucked, though David Cooper did have a double.

Dunedin 3    Clearwater 7

Joel Carreno started and allowed two runs in an inning before (I presume) a rain delay ended his evening.  Frank Gailey then arrived and allowed two runs in four innings.

Yan Gomes homered, singled, walked, and drove in three and well, that was about it.  Ok, Mike McDade had two hits.  Now that's it.

Lansing 3   Bowling Green 5

Matt Fields started and allowed three runs on eleven hits (!) in five innings for the Lugnuts.  Scott Gracey followed and allowed two runs in two frames.

Eight different Lugnuts got a hit on Monday and one of them was Kevin AhrensJustin Jackson singled and walked twice while Sean Ochinko doubled for the only extra base hit on the evening.

Auburn 6    Williamsport 1

The Doubledays one-hit the....Crosscutters?  Weird name.  Casey Lawrence did most of the work for Auburn going six, allowing a run on a hit and striking out seven.  Brandon Berl and Leandro Mella finished things off.

Yeico Aponte had two hits for Auburn while Matthew Nuzzo drove in a pair.  Carlos Perez had a hit and walked twice while a who bunch of guys stole a base.  Seriously, check it out.

DSL Blue Jays @ DSL Braves

They were scheduled to play a double header but MiLB.com is asleep at the switch.  No updates despite the games starting over 12 hours ago.

GCL Blue Jays 11    GCL Yankees 7

Whoa, the GCL Jays rapped 16 hits and 8 of the regulars had two a piece.  I'm not listing them so click above.  Chris Hawkins and Andy Fermin each doubled twice and drove in three.  There were seven doubles total from the Jays.  Not a bad day.

Speaking of seven, that's how many hurlers it took to finish this one off.  Nicholas Purdy started and allowed three runs in four innings though he did strike out five against no walks.  Then the rest of the staff picked him up.  Seriously, you should probably just read the boxscore for the details in this one.

Three Stars:

3rd Star: Chris Hawkins
and Andy Fermin (TIE)- 2-for-4, 2 2B, 3 RBI each
2nd Star: Adam Calderone- 2-for-5, 2 HR
1st Star: Casey Lawrence- 6 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 K

As much as JP has raked this past little while.  He needs to throw somebody out.  Calling him a defensive stud is far from reality.
John Northey - Tuesday, June 29 2010 @ 09:59 AM EDT (#217666) #
Checking B-R I see that JPA has thrown out 21% this year, 25% last year, and 34% the year before. Not that good, but one wonders how good the pitchers are at slowing the running game down too.

Jeroloman, for comparison, has thrown out 32% this year, 43% last, and 37% the year before. Chavez, also in AAA, has thrown out 32% this year (43% lifetime in minors).

Zep did have 7 SBs against him at the bigs last year in 11 starts, but as a LHP you'd think more of the blame lands on JPA. Certainly doesn't look good when the other team has a successful double-steal of 2nd and home, but it's a little better seeing the 4 SBs came from Graham and Velez, who appear to be speedsters. Good think Molina will likely be around next year at 1m (200k buyout) with Jeroloman waiting in the wings too.

BP and ESPN Insider loves our minor league catching.  Check it out, if you're an Insider.  A small preview....

There are plenty of teams in baseball that would be happy with just one good catching prospect, but all of a sudden, the Blue Jays are absolutely loaded with them

That would be BP and ESPN Insider, Kevin Goldstein.

I hope one of those guys has a good enough bat to translate to a different position. Third base perhaps? Or even one of the corner OF spots?

Sam Dyson seems to be pitching well at the CWS based on the information from BA. Be nice to get his name on a contract.

It'd be nice if one of these catching prospects turned into a major league player. Who was the last Jays catching prospect to really make it? Borders and Myers? When I think of Phelps and Quiroz and Cash and Thigpen...

John Northey - Tuesday, June 29 2010 @ 12:28 PM EDT (#217680) #
Don't forget 'catchers' Sprague and Delgado who both reached the majors first as catchers before shifting (quickly).
Chris DH - Tuesday, June 29 2010 @ 12:51 PM EDT (#217681) #

Or we could hope one of the catching prospects becomes the next Carlos Delgado! But seriously, I am not sure any of the catching prospects will ever produce offensively like Delgado.

It would appear Arencibia, Jeroloman, d'Arnaud and Jimenez all have legitimate/reasonable chance of being average to above average defensive catchers. The BP article gave props to Arencibia ("extremely athletic"), Jeroloman ("better defensive catchers around"),   d'Arnaud ("star potential";"arm strength") and Jimenez ("gunned down 54% of basestealers").

Whats the world on Perez and Nessy? Note: Just went back and read Baseball America's scouting report from the handbook and they seem to think Perez "stands out most with his defensive skills".

I would think with all of the catching prospects in the organization at least one of them could stick at the position and produce at an above average level - both offensively and defensively.  A very good problem to have.  In the next few years the issue with finding a long-term solution at catcher, in-house, should be resolved.

I would agree with one of the other posters - at some point the Jays will probably look to move one of these guys to other positions - perhaps thirdbase?

Maldoff - Tuesday, June 29 2010 @ 01:21 PM EDT (#217683) #

While good catching depth is great, catchers are almost as finicky as pitchers in terms of development!

For example, take a look at the Taxes Rangers, who a few years back had 3 top catching prospects in Satlalamacchia, Teagarden and Max Ramirez, in addition to Gerald Laird getting started in the majors.

The Jays need to give Arencibia a look this year.  He needs to be catching everyday in Septmber for the Jays.

Looking at the box score for the CWS, it's ridiculous how college coaches abuse college pitching. Cooper

throwing 136 pitches on 3 days rest - I hope Dyson doesn't have to make another start. If I had a top prospect

son I would demand having a pitch limit on him or else he wouldn't attend college.

92-93 - Tuesday, June 29 2010 @ 07:37 PM EDT (#217702) #
Since you mentioned it, yeah some of these college pitch counts are alarming considering where these arms are in terms of their development. Last night Blake Cooper and Gerritt Cole threw 136 and 128 pitches. Dyson had pitch counts of 129, 125, 123, and 120 throughout the season (and probably tons of others 100-120), and he threw 111 on 3 days rest (half of what he's used to) in his last start in the CWS. On the positive side, the report was that he was holding his velocity deep into the game, throwing 95 still in the 7th inning when his defense let him down with some poor plays behind him. That's encouraging news for a college SP at the end of a long season. It will be interesting to see tonight if Dyson is used in relief on 2 days rest, it will probably depend a lot on the score as SoCal won Game 1 and probably plans on starting Dyson tom. night on 3 days rest again if need be.

Wallace has a sore wrist and is day to day.

Travis Snider will play in the GCL tomorrow, per MLB.

Toronto manager Cito Gaston said Snider is slated to play for the Gulf Coast League Blue Jays on Wednesday. The 22-year-old outfielder, placed on the 15-day disabled list May 17 -- retroactive to May 15 -- with a sprained right wrist, will remain with the GCL Jays for a not-yet-determined number of games, before proceeding to Class A Dunedin and Double-A New Hampshire.

oh thank the lord.

I was starting to think it was surgery time.

You say "thank the Lord" and I say "oh Christ!"

.....another sore wrist.

Time for more wailing..... AJ Jimenez has gone on the DL and Yan Gomes is in Lansing.  I don't think it is serious.  Jimenez missed the all-star game and the Jays waited a few days before DL'ing Jimenez.  That is a sign they were waiting to see if he got better.

Hech is headed to AA? He has certainly proven himself...should be in the majors by August.
Sneeps - Wednesday, June 30 2010 @ 01:11 AM EDT (#217727) #

Just another underrated power arm in our system, is 23 year old Alan Farina.  The smoke thrower continues to put up great numbers after being promoted to AA.

AA numbers:  3.1 ip, 0 hits, no runs, 1 walk, 6 k's

Season Totals:  2-1, 1.13 era, 39.2 ip, 19 hits, 0 hr, 13 walks, 52 k's.

ayjackson - Wednesday, June 30 2010 @ 01:17 AM EDT (#217729) #

Arencibia was 2/5 with double and a walk tonight.  Must be a tick under 1.000 OPS now.

Sneeps - Wednesday, June 30 2010 @ 01:54 AM EDT (#217732) #

Surely we've past the point of looking at rbi's and extra base hits as a way to evaluate players... What really counts is how often he walks.  That's the real way to measure success.

Kelekin - Wednesday, June 30 2010 @ 04:45 AM EDT (#217738) #
I wouldn't quite say Alan Farina is under-rated.  He was drafted ahead of Rzep and Mills and had the best stuff of all 3, but unfortunately has been having quite the battle with injuries.  This year, he's finally healthy, and proving why he was thought to have the better stuff of the 3.  He'd be a great power arm out of the bullpen for us.
