With the 51s resting, New Hampshire and the GCL Blue Jays provided the only offence on the evening. The Fisher Cats won by a run while the GCL Blue Jays posted the only victory. Meanwhile, Lansing, Dunedin and Auburn were each held to only four hits in their losses. However, there were a highly anticipated debuts from a rehabbing player and a highly publicized prospect, one of which certainly surpassed expectations.

Las Vegas

Scheduled off-day.

Reading 5 @ New Hampshire 6 - Boxscore

Zach Stewart started for the Fisher Cats and surrendered all 5 runs over 7 innings. He struck out two batters and walked three, while allowing 7 hits. He retired 11 of 17 batters on balls in play with groundouts and, with the victory, improved to 6-2 with a 4.54 ERA. He turned the ball over to the usual suspects, as Danny Farquhar pitched a scoreless eighth before Tim Collins picked up his seventh save while walking one.

It was a team effort at the plate with no standout individual performances. The leader in hits was Eric Thames, who went 3-for-5 with a triple, but he didn’t score a run or add an RBI. Dan Perales and Shawn Bowman each went 1-for-5 with a double, with only Bowman adding an RBI. Half of the runs involved Darin Mastroianni, who was 1-for-3 with a solo homer, 2 RBI and 2 runs. Jonathan Jaspe also hit a solo homer, while Adam Loewen and Jonathan Diaz were each 1-for-4 with a run. Finally, saving the most anticipated for last, Adeiny Hechevarria debuted for New Hampshire, batting ninth. He went 1-for-2 with a triple and 2 walks in a very successful introduction to Double-A.

Dunedin 0 @ Clearwater 4Boxscore

Henderson Alvarez didn’t have his best start yesterday, going 4 innings and allowing four runs. Alvarez surrendered four hits and two walks, while striking out five. Ross Buckwalter, Chad Beck, Boomer Potts and Matt Daly each went 1 inning and held Clearwater scoreless. Beck’s inning was the best, as he struck out all three batters. Potts struggled, allowing a hit and walking two batters.

There was little to write about concerning the Dunedin offence. The D-Jays were held to four hits during the game, with Brad McElroy’s double being the only extra-base knock. Tyler Pastornicky, Justin McClanahan and Jon Talley each had a single, providing Dunedin’s other hits. Pastornicky, Mark Sobolewski and Michael McDade each had 3 strikeouts. Talley earned a base on balls, as did Wellinton Ramirez and Brian Van Kirk.

Lansing 0 @ Bowling Green 2Boxscore

Four hits was the name of the game last night, as Lansing could only manage four singles. Kenny Wilson, Ryan Goins, Ryan Schimpf and Kevin Nolan were the magicians at the plate who managed to get a base knock. Nolan also drew one of the team’s three walks, making him a star at the plate for the Lugnuts. Justin Jackson, playing at 3B, and Yan Gomes drew the other two walks. Balbino Fuenmayor was 0-for-3 with 3 strikeouts.

Dave Sever started and gave up a pair of runs over 6 innings. Sever struck out five and surrendered two walks and three hits. Aaron Loup relieved him and struck out three over 2 innings. And that’s that.

Auburn 1 @ Williamsport 4Boxscore

Like their bretheren in Dunedin, the Doubledays were held to four hits in yesterday’s game. Yeico Aponte, Matt Johnson, Marcus Knecht and Carlos Perez had the hits, with Knecht knocking a double for Auburn’s only extra-base rap. Johnson scored the run when he was driven home by Aponte. Pinch-hitter Joseph Bowen drew the team’s only walk, while Leon Durham and Gustavo Pierre were 0-for-8 with 5 strikeouts. Johnson and Pierre each made fielding errors.

Daniel Webb started and surrendered three runs in 5.2 innings. He walked one, struck out four and allowed 6 hits. He retired 9 of 11 batters on balls in play on groundouts. Travis Garrett pitched 1.1 scoreless innings with 3 groundouts and a strikeout. Drew Permision gave up three hits and an earned run in his relief inning.s

GCL Blue Jays 8 @ GCL Pirates 1Boxscore

Tyler Powell started for the GCL Blue Jays and put forth a fine effort. Powell went 5 innings and struck out three batters without walking a batter. He didn’t allow a run and only surrendered one hit. Drew Elliott surrendered a run on three hits over 1.1 innings, while striking out three. Alesone Escalante and Michael Kelly combined for 2.2 scoreless innings with four strikeouts to finish the game, as the pitching held the Pirates to 4 hits.

The GCL Blue Jays scored 8 runs during the first 4 innings on their way to a convincing victory. Hot-hitting Jake Marisnick was held to one double over 5 at-bats, scoring a run and adding an RBI. The less heralded Andy Fermin continued his hot hitting (and, if he’s anything like his father, his fine fielding) went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run. KC Hobson led the offence with a 3-for-5 night that included 3 RBI. Pierce Rankin, Edward Suero and Matt Abraham – the 7, 8 and 9 hitters – each had 2 hits in the game and combined for 5 runs scored. Bryson Namba went 1-for-5, but most eyes were on leadoff hitter Travis Snider who went 1-for-3 with a sacrifice fly before he was substituted.

Three Stars:

3rd Star – Adeiny Hechavarria, 1-2, 3B, 2 BB, 3 TB

2nd Star – Dave Sever, 6 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K

1st Star – Tyler Powell, 5 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K

Thomas, thanks for your work in the wee hours of Thursday morning on the Minor League Update for Wednesday night.  Your intro mentions that New Hampshire lost their contest, but they did win, besting Reading in an exciting match to save a sweep of the series by the AA Phillies.

Listening to it on the radio was exciting as vetran announcer Mike Murphy called his last game for the Fisher Cats.  Murphy is moving on to take a job with the Univ of New Hampshire sports department. He leaves  the Fisher Cats booth after five years and several New England broadcast excellence awards for his work.  And here's the way the Fisher Cats web site reported on the game winning 2 out RBI  single by Diaz in the seventh inning and the Homers by Mastriani and Thames earlier

A-Hech showed some plate discipline walking twice and waiting for the right pitch to swat for a three bagger.  He showed good work in the field, initiating a double play with Diaz and Cooper and putting the tag on a stealing Phillie at 2nd for his two defensive plays of the night.  All in all a respectable AA debut for ol' A-Hech.

By far, Hech's best game this year.

Thanks for the late night update.  I love when these get posted late so I feel like less of a loser for always being up until 4 am. =)

Since I'm only a 1/2 hr away from the stadium and it only costs $8 to see good pro baseball, I decided to take in the FCats & R-Phils contest last night.  It didn't  hurt that the weather was absolutely perfect!

My unprofessional observations of my first Adeiny sighting.  My initial thought when I saw him come out for warm-ups was, Nomar Garciaparra.  It probably had more to do with the batting glove swinging out of the back pocket, but his body type is similar.  He certainly covers a lot of ground in the field.  On the 1st inn double play, he fielded the ball at the edge of the grass BEHIND the 2B bag and gloved it to Diaz.  Pretty good even from double play depth @ SS.  My feeling when seeing that is he'll get charged more errors than some because he'll get to balls that no one else even dreams of gloving.  He's extremely quick at applying the tags on stolen base throws.  Of the 2 SB attempts I saw, he made it closer than you'd think it was going to be purely because he is lighting quick with the catch and tag.  I think the patience (2 BB's) we saw was more of "it's my first game on a new team, relax and see some pitches".  I suspect that the more comfortable he gets, the more aggressive he'll revert back to.  As for his running ability, he's fast but not necessarily graceful.  On the triple, he seemed to be taking longer strides than he needed to which made him look clumsy.  Also on the ground out in his 1st AB, he mistimed his strides making his last step a long lunge for the bag that I've seen result in BAD leg injuries in the past.  Kevin Gray took some video of him in batting practice.

The only other things I'll comment on: the Phillies seem to like large players.  First it was Ryan Howard, then Michael Taylor, now Matt Rizzotti.  Think Jim Thome except maybe 10-15 pounds bigger.  Let's just say I'd hate to get hit by one of his linedrives.  Finally, it intrigues me that Reading has 5! players on the MLB 40-man roster.  I don't think NH has had 5 TOTAL over the past 3-5 seasons.  Am I the only one that finds that odd?

Thanks for the heads-up. I got the score correct in the game story, I just mixed it up in the intro blurb. It's been corrected. Readers always need to keep alert for errors in the early morning updates.

Thomas, not to gang up, but I believe it was Las Vegas, not Lansing that had the night off last night (first line of game summaries says Lansing).

Arencibia's triple-slash line in June: 400/448/842. I knew that he was scorching the ball, but that is a pretty impressive month's work.

Thomas, not to gang up...

No worries. I welcome any and all corrections. I'd like to say that this gets a month's worth of errors out of the way, but that's probably just wishful thinking.

Randy Boone is finally better from his major ankle sprain.  He is scheduled to start for New Hampshire tomorrow.

BA has an article regarding the international signing period which starts tomorrow, it's suscriber only but I'll paste a few quotes as they believe the Jays will be the biggest spender this year:

"In most years, the Yankees are the big dogs on the international market. This year, teams are waiting to see what the Blue Jays will do, and wondering just how much money they will spend in Latin America. The Blue Jays have been connected to a startling number of top prospects, with general manager Alex Anthopoulos reportedly in the Dominican Republic as the signing period begins."

The article states the Jays are connected to Venezuelan righthander Adonis Cardona for $2.8 million,  Venezuelan third baseman Gabriel Cenas for around $700,000, Mexican righthander Luis Heredia for around $3 million, they are connected to Venezuelan lefty Angel Mejias and have interest in Venezuelan shortstop Rougned Odor and are in on other top Latin American players as well.

"Scouts wonder how the Blue Jays could possibly sign all these top players

This could be interesting.

Thanks for sharing ramone. Sounds very promising, just the fact that ownership seems committed to spending money to beef up the system and allow AA to carry out his plan is very encouraging, now we just need to hope the scouts get the right guys.

Frankie Piliere has his new Top 25 prospect list posted - excluded are players who've appeared in the majors and 2010 draftees.

Brett Wallace makes the list at #9:

The Skinny: Wallace just continues to mash, and now the good news is the power is really developing as well. He's right on the cusp of being big-league ready and profiles as an impact bat at the next level.

85bluejay - Thursday, July 01 2010 @ 10:15 PM EDT (#217806) #

Nice to hear a positive report on Wallace because in his chat today,Kevin Goldstein of BP said he's

not a big fan of Wallace - Doesn't see him as an impact bat.

ayjackson - Thursday, July 01 2010 @ 11:15 PM EDT (#217807) #
Keith Law just updated his Top 25 and was still bullish on Wallace too.  Not #9 I don't think, but still rates him.

"Scouts wonder how the Blue Jays could possibly sign all these top players"

Because they aren't spending what they could at the major league level.  Efficient allocation of resources!
