One win outta four for the affiliates on Sunday but by far the most impressive performance came in a losing cause.

Las Vegas- Scheduled Day Off

New Hampshire 8    Binghamton 6

Eric Thames
and Darin Mastroianni swung the big bats for the Fisher Cats on Sunday.  Thames slugged his 15th HR of the year to go along with a double, walk, and three runs scored while Mastroianni doubled three times and drove in a pair of runs raising his average to .308.  David Cooper was 0-for-1 but walked three times and Adam Loewen singled twice, walked and drove in a pair.

On the mound, B.J. LaMura started and went five for the win despite allowing four runs.  Tim Collins pitched a perfect ninth, with a strikeout, for his ninth save.

Lakeland 2    Dunedin 1

Joel Carreno deserved a better fate.  In six innings, Carreno allowed two runs on seven hits.  But that wasn't the real story.  In those six innings, there was a groundout to short, a runner picked off first, and a pop-out to catcher in foul territory.  The other fifteen outs were recorded via strikeout.  Yup, 15 Ks in six innings.  Impressive stuff.  Boomer Potts went the final three in shutout fashion.

The offense sure didn't do much to help Carreno's case.  The DJays managed just six hits.  Two of 'em, including a homer, came off the bat of Brian Van KirkTravis D'Arnaud and Mike McDade both went 1-for-4 with a double.

Bowling Green 6    Lansing 4

Brad Glenn and Balbino Fuenmayor each smacked two run homers for the Lugnuts to provide all of the offense on Sunday.  Justin Jackson was 2-for-4 to raise his average to .234 while Kevin Ahrens had a hit and Sean Ochinko picked up a pair, including a double.  Oh, and Fuenmayor also had the customary two strikeouts and managed a pair of errors in the field.

Ryan Tepera started and went five, allowed four runs on six hits, walked a batter and struck out five in dropping his record to 7-4.

Auburn 3    Aberdeen 7

The Doubledays led this one 3-2 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth before an RBI double and a Grand Slam ruined their afternoon.  Shawn Griffith blew the save in fairly spectacular fashion which cost Daniel Webb the win.  Webb went 5.1 and allowed two runs on three hits while striking out five.

At the dish, Lance Durham smacked his 5th homer of the year while Sean Fermin and Oliver Dominguez each had a pair of hits.

Cerrano has 15 BB and 73 K in the last 10 starts (54.1 IP)

might be time to add him to the list of guys to get excited about? what's the eyes-on report on this guy?

Alvarez played in the futures game. Gave up a 3 run homer to the MVP of the game. But from what they said on fangraphs, he was hitting 96 with a good fastball. He's still really young though, so good possibilities in the future. No idea if Magnuson played.

Will - just got the e-book - VERY WELL done! Even YOUR part on the Jays was well worth reading and the rest was MUCH MUCH better (joke). Seriously - bravo!

Like Andy Seiler's amazing Draft Reports it's well worth the tenner to buy!

WillRain: Carreno was always exciting, but it is likely he fell off people's radars due to last year's average performance.  It seems to happen too much - prospect has one bad year, is no longer talented.  Well, Andruw Jones still has a job in the majors, so...
LouisvilleJayFan - Monday, July 12 2010 @ 08:11 AM EDT (#218202) #
Magnuson came in with 2 outs in the bottom of the 6th. He got into some trouble and JP even remarked that Trystan looked like he was just "yanking'" it out there and not to read too much into his struggles in the game. Nerves, for sure.

I watched the game yesterday and the interesting thing is to see how the players at the higher level handle the excitement of the big stage over the guys at the lower levels.  Much more relaxed than the A ball players.

Mike Green - Monday, July 12 2010 @ 09:38 AM EDT (#218205) #
The two runs that did score on Carreno were not fluky though.  A solo homer and three line drives produced the Tigers' runs.

Keith Law's scouting report on Henderson Alvarez:

Henderson Alvarez (Blue Jays) gave up the bomb to Conger, but the raw stuff was impressive -- 93-96, changeup 77-78 with good downward fade and good arm speed, and a solid slider at 80-83. His delivery has a lot of effort and he has some head violence at the end, both of which generally make me think "reliever," although the chance for three pitches should keep him in the rotation for the time being.

Gerry - Monday, July 12 2010 @ 09:53 AM EDT (#218207) #

With regard to Carreno I saw him pitch last year.  When I saw him he had a plus slider but an average to below average fastball.

I interviewed his manager Clayton McCullough a month ago and asked about Carreno, here is his answer:

Carreno is a good competitor, when he takes the ball he wants to win.  He has gotten better from start to start.  He is another guy, first year at this level, having to adjust to the hitters, he has done great for us.  He is learning to trust his fastball and to pitch off it a little bit more than he has in the past.  Use his breaking ball when he needs a big out.

First thing is that McCullough talks about Carreno having a better fastball and using it more.  When you use the fastball more it sets up the slider to be your out pitch.  I am guessing that's what happened yesterday, Carreno probably had a great slider and used it to get a lot of K's.  But McCullough didn't rave about Carreno, words like competitor and wants to win means he is an OK pitcher who is getting by right now.

Carreno's WHIP is 1.4 which is high for the FSL.  I am not trying to demean Carreno, his performance this year is both unexpected and a nice surprise.  But I don't think he has yet risen to top 30 status.

Mike Green - Monday, July 12 2010 @ 10:15 AM EDT (#218208) #
For fun, I checked out the FSL team batting page.  The D-Jays lead the league in homers and strikeouts, have the fewest walks and have the second lowest batting average in the league.  Sound familiar?

You don't really think about it, because the numbers in the FSL are low to begin with.

induldged myself in a bit of alternate-universe speculation this AM over breakfast.

We all consider Bautista to be having a career year and quite possible the offensive MVP of the team, right?

Almost everyone agrees that EE has been a pretty huge disappointment with the bat, right?

Well, i noticed that EE had almost exactly half the playing time Bautista had so first i doubled his stats and the results were close enough that i decided to see how much more EE would have had to have done to have gotten into jose's ballpark.

the raw numbers - JB on top and EEx2 on the bottom:
AB - H - 2B - 3B - HR - RBI - BB - K

304 - 72 - 17 - 2 - 24 - 56 - 54 - 68 - .237 - .361 - .543
298 - 66 - 12 - 0 - 20 - 48 - 38 - 62 - .221 - .304 - .463

now....let's look at what happens to that bottom line if EE had hit 2 more doubles, 1 more homer, and walked 8 more times in his 45 games (that's less than once every five games)

298 - 72 - 16 - 0 - 22 - 50 - 54 - 62 - .242 - .358 - .517

Not really a huge point here except that the difference in the biggest  surprise on the team and a huge disappointment is as small as 3 XBH and 8 BB
(okay, technically i didn't get EE all the way up to JB's level - probably would have taken one more HR - but no one would be complaining about a .875 OPS from EE)

Noah Syndergaard is making his pro debut today for the GCL Jays.  He has had a 1-2-3 first inning so far.

According to BA, Canadian LHP Jay Johnson has signed. Good stuff but a significant injury history, which caused him to drop in the draft.
Gerry - Monday, July 12 2010 @ 12:37 PM EDT (#218216) #

I double checked and Joel carreno has a breaking ball that he throws at two speeds, sometimes it's like a curve and sometimes like a slider.  That pitch was working very well for him yesterday.

Also Asher Wojciechowski has been shut down for the year because of innings limit.  He pitched about 120 in college and 20 in the pros and that's enough I am told.

Syndergaard pitched two innings, six up, six down.

Marc Hulet - Monday, July 12 2010 @ 12:49 PM EDT (#218217) #
Carreno has a BABIP of more than .400 for the year so his FIP is down below 3.00, meaning his overall numbers (4.00+ ERA and high hit total) are actually better than they appear... To me, without having actually seen him pitch in person, and based soley on stats analysis, he would look like a potential 3rd or 4th starter. Assuming he can command the fastball to set up his secondary pitches against those better hitters.
Mike Green - Monday, July 12 2010 @ 01:07 PM EDT (#218218) #
Here's a MILB.com article with some comments on Carreno's stuff.

The club is trying to teach him a change-up, but with inconsistent results.  It is possible to succeed as a starter with a fastball and a 12 to 6 curve.  It is interesting that LH hitters have really struggled against Carreno this year, with no homers (and a high GB/FB rate) and 63 Ks in 48 innings.

Any pitcher who puts up a 25/112 W/K in 92 innings in high A is worth following.  Carreno may be 23 years old, but he's a classic illustration why it is much harder to evaluate pitching prospects than hitting prospects.  Late-developing off-speed stuff can make all the difference between a pitcher whose best hope is to be a middle reliever and one who might be a fine starter.  I would be curious to know how Carreno has been so effective against LH hitters; my guess is that it is due to severe downward break on his curveball but maybe mamboon can help us out.
ayjackson - Monday, July 12 2010 @ 01:29 PM EDT (#218219) #

Keith Law ranked Henderson Alvarez as his 16th best prospect from the future stars game, ahead of such prospect pornstars as Christian Friedrich, Yonder Alonso, Zach Wheeler and Tanner Scheppers.

He might be in line for the Top 100 list.  Speaking of, BA had their top 25 last week and Doug Drabek was in it (19th I think).  They listed the "next 25" alphabetically and both d'Arnaud and Wallace were included.

The AllStar break seems like an appropriate time for a constant if silent reader to thank the contributors for these minor league reports and links to box scores - and also for the mostly intelligent comments from you all.

Doug Drabek wishes he was in BA's Midseason Top 25.
James W - Monday, July 12 2010 @ 03:06 PM EDT (#218222) #
Well he's on the list, so I guess his wish was granted.

Mike Green - Monday, July 12 2010 @ 03:13 PM EDT (#218224) #
Doug Drabek is almost as old as I am, so his only chance to make the BA's top 25 prospects is to learn the knuckler really, really well.

Curious if anyone who has the subscription to BA can go over a bit what they said about the Jays today in their mid season report.
ayjackson - Monday, July 12 2010 @ 03:37 PM EDT (#218226) #
It's only a psuedo-BA piece as it's written by Larry Milson.  It's not worth the subscription, let's put it that way.
James W - Monday, July 12 2010 @ 03:49 PM EDT (#218227) #
My bad; I skimmed over the references to Doug Drabek.

The site seems a bit heavy on the MLU's these days.  Need to spice in a few more This Day in Baseballs I reckon.

Otherwise, fantastic job, roster.

Aaron Westlake (Vanderbilt), the Jays 22nd round pick was named Cape Cod player of the week today.

The Fisher Cats continued their winning ways this afternoon with a 9th inning run to break a 5-5 tie.  They have a 2 game lead over the Yankee affiliate, the Trenton Thunder.  Betances should be making up his way to Trenton soon, so it behooves the Cats to make hay now.

BA has a blurb up saying Wallace will not be heading the the AAA allstar game and Hoffpauir will be taking his place, it doesn't state why though.  Anyone know why Wallace is no longer going, injury?

His wrist was injured recently, and he missed time because of it; could be related.

Just want to add my thanks to all the roster writers on the site. Really enjoy the features, especially MLU, as well as the articulate posts.
