The six North American based teams gave up fifty six runs in seven games.  The only team to win was Las Vegas who could out muscle their opponent.  Bright spots were a 17 year old pitcher in the DSL who pitched five hitless innings; Jesse Carlson pitched well; Brian Jeroloman hit a home run; Ryan Goins got some hits; Carlos Perez hit a home run; Jake Marisnick got another couple of hits.

Memphis 10  Las Vegas 12

Just another night in the PCL.  Memphis outhit Las Vegas 18-12 and in the middle of the fourth this was a 9-8 game.  Essentially the 51's won because Jesse Carlson shut down Memphis for two innings.  Bobby Ray gave up eight runs, five earned, in five innings.  Rommie Lewis pitched two innings and was happy to escape with two runs conceded, he was hit around for six hits in two innings.

Mike McCoy and Mike Jacobs had three hits each.  Jacobs and Brian Jeroloman hit two run home runs.  Jeroloman was 1-3 with two walks.  Brad Emaus was 2-5.  Jacobs had four RBI's and is hitting .467.

Bowie 13  New Hampshire 2

Rey Gonzalez's tough season continues.  Bowie got to him for six runs, through nine hits, in six innings.  Danny Farquhar cruised through the seventh but was terrible in the eighth, he gave up hits, walks, hit a batter, and an error combined to give Bowie four runs.  Bowie hit a couple of home runs off Ronald Uviedo in the ninth before infielder Luis Sanchez got the last two outs.

Offensively Jon Jaspe had three hits, one a home run, Shawn Bowman had two, and David Cooper one.  That's it.

Palm Beach 4  Dunedin 2 - game 1

Henderson Alvarez was throwing the ball down the middle and the Palm Beach hitters were happy.  In six and two thirds innings Alvarez gave up 13 hits and he had no strikeouts.  Palm Beach hitters were hitting early and often, Alvarez was lucky to only give up four runs.

Offensively Dunedin had just four hits.  Mark Sobolewski had one of them, a double to drive in a run.  The other run was unearned and scored on a ground ball in the seventh.

Palm Beach 6  Dunedin 2 - game 2

Game two wasn't much better than game one.  Chad Jenkins was his usual self, four runs conceded in five innings, six hits allowed.  Evan Crawford walked the bases loaded in the sixth, then hit a batter as he allowed two runs.

Dunedin scored their two runs in the bottom of the seventh, Ryan Goins delivered a two out, two RBI single.  Goins had his best night in high A, he was 3-3 with the two ribbies.

Fort Wayne 12  Lansing 3

Another tough night for the pitchers.  Egan Smith and a parade of relievers all allowed runs.  Ryan Schimpf led the offense with a 3-3 night, all extra base hits, two doubles and a triple.  Jake Marisnick was 2-4 and is hitting over .300.  Kevin Ahrens picked up a hit and a walk.

Auburn 4  Vermont 7

ESPN's Buster Olney threw out the first pitch before this game, Olney is a Vermont native and brought good luck to the Mountaineers.  Something un-nerved Daniel Webb, he walked six hitters in 3 plus innings.  Add in a few hits and some erros and Webb had given up six runs.  The bullpen was actually good, they only conceded an unearned run.

Auburn had started well, Carlos Perez hit a two run home run in the first inning.  Oliver Dominguez supplied the rest of the offense, he singled in a run in the second and hit a solo home run in the fifth.

GCL Blue Jays 1  GCL Phillies 4

The Phillies chipped away, scoring a single run in four separate innings.  They outhit the Jays 8-6 but in their 8 was a home run, a triple and a double, whereas the Jays hits were all singles.  Misual Diaz made the start and gave up two runs in five innings.

Pierce Rankin and Daniel Arcila had two hits each, Arcila drove in the only run.  Dalton Pompey made his professional debut and went 0-3, all ground outs.

DSL Angels 0  DSL Blue Jays 3

17 year old starter Luis Zerpa pitched five hitless innings to get the win.

Three stars:

3rd star: Jesse Carlson

2nd star: Mike Jacobs

1st star: Luis Zerpa

Great week by this Mike Jacobs guy.  I think he could be our potential franchise 1st baseman.  Call him up, asap.

Baseball America reports that the Jays have officially signed second round pick Justin Nicolino.  There is just over a week to go in the signing period and the above slot deals are being approved by the commissioners office now.

The Jays also are believed to have above-slot deals in the works with fifth-rounder Dickie Joe Thon (reportedly more than seven figures) and ninth-rounder Brandon Mims (for third-round money). Toronto has yet to sign first-rounder Deck McGuire, second-rounder Griffin Murphy and fourth-rounder Sam Dyson.

BA's Jim Callis also notes that the Jays' signing of 7th- round Texas highschooler Mitchell Taylor is $217,500 above slot  (  http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/draft/?p=2657  )

Nice to see that they are spending all the reported money they had for the draft.

Any chances they'll sign Kris Bryant? I'm hoping they do. Huge power potential.
metafour - Saturday, August 07 2010 @ 02:00 PM EDT (#220038) #
Bryant is very very unlikely to sign.
TamRa - Saturday, August 07 2010 @ 02:10 PM EDT (#220039) #
Any chance we can start calling Thon "DJ"?

If you believe all the "unofficial" reports, the Jays have now agreed to terms with all their picks through seven rounds except McGuire

I haven't read a thing about Dyson signing, do you have a link WillRain?

Was a tweet that implied it...can't remember by who
Mike Green - Saturday, August 07 2010 @ 05:28 PM EDT (#220059) #
The signing of all their picks but McGuire would put a different cast on the draft.  It's simply taking full advantage of the rules, in order to buy near-top prospects in bulk.  It's a bit nasty though.

If it hasn't been reported yet, Crouse us starting in right field for Lansing tonight. The fame should also be available in the minor league baseball package sure in case you have it and choose to watch.

Off topic, and if I'm breaking any rules here I'm sorry.

I'm considering a subscription to Baseball America. Do any of you Bauxites subscribe? Is it worth it? Magazine or online content?

So Drabek is having another sweet start, and it just so happens that he's starting the same day as our open #5 slot came up.

So let's start a list of why Drabek SHOULDN'T be called up to take the next turn in that #5 slot for the big club.

I'll start:

  1. It's bad form to embarass other teams so much with our wealth of young talent.

TamRa - Saturday, August 07 2010 @ 08:44 PM EDT (#220075) #
noticed this:

New Hampshire Fisher Cats placed RHP Zach Stewart on the temporarily inactive list.

Anything more to this than inning management? His next turn was tomorrow and he still has 20 IP in the tank...surely they wouldn't shut him down without moving the line as far as possible?

while I'm on the subject of AA pitching - I still haven't found an answer to why it's being reported the Jays want to hut down Drabek at 160 when he threw 158 last year. I'm begining to suspect Blair has his facts wrong because I don't see the logic in that.

Here's two more for the No Drabek Yet, Please pile:

2. Because Mills has had 2 starts this year, one very good, and one mediocre-at-best, and deserves a legit chance.
3. Because playoff experience for Drabek will be valuable.
Mike Green - Saturday, August 07 2010 @ 09:03 PM EDT (#220077) #
With all the off-days, the club doesn't really need to move to a 6 man rotation now.  You would want to re-evaluate the situation in a couple of weeks for a few reasons.

Having Zep, Stewart and Drabek waiting in the wings is a very nice position.

Jonny German - Saturday, August 07 2010 @ 09:14 PM EDT (#220079) #
4. Because Drabek hasn't clearly stepped forward this year. There's something to be said for 'consolidating your gains', but I'd like to see more Ks and fewer BBs out of him.

5. Because he hasn't even touched AAA yet.

6. Because he's only 22. He's in no imminent danger of becoming an old prospect.

7. Because Rzep should get called ahead of him.
Jdog - Saturday, August 07 2010 @ 09:32 PM EDT (#220080) #
I completely agree with all 4 of the points above, Drabek is not striking anybody out in AA. Look at Cecil's numbers in New Hampshire and compare them to Drabek's....no need to rush him, let him put it together first
Mike Green - Saturday, August 07 2010 @ 09:32 PM EDT (#220081) #
In Drabek's case, I am not too worried about his K rate in double A.  It's about 7, but throughout his minor league career, his BABIP has been very low and this year is no exception.  A BABIP of .141 on ground balls at the minor league level is a reflection that batters simply do not hit him hard.  His stuff is very, very good.  It would be helpful if his control was a little better, of course.

If the club is 6 games out in 2 weeks and they need another starter due to injury or tiredness, and Zep continues to struggle in triple A, they may decide that it is time for Drabek.
metafour - Saturday, August 07 2010 @ 09:57 PM EDT (#220083) #
Drabek is falling back to reality (ie: back to elite status).  Hasn't walked more than 2 batters in 9 straight starts now.  Stuff is still showing to be very good; as he simply is not giving up hits...period.  Batters are hitting .173 against him over his last 10 starts.  He is as nasty as ever.
uglyone - Saturday, August 07 2010 @ 10:15 PM EDT (#220088) #
Drabek's July & August: 7gs, 44.0ip, 6.8k/9, 3.3k/bb, 1.06whip, 2.18era

It's time to move the kid on up, and I have no desire to ever see him in Vegas.

And we just happen to have a spot open for him.

Kelekin - Saturday, August 07 2010 @ 10:26 PM EDT (#220089) #
Both Stewart and Drabek should spend a good portion of next year in AAA.  I really don't like how in the past so many of our players were rushed past AAA.  I'm not sure what the deal with Stewart is since there was no corresponding move.  If we consider it likely that Thames, Mastroianni, Loewen (if he re-signs), and Jeroloman will all be in AAA, he'll have a usual core of players to work with.  Cooper might get promoted just because, and there's no reason for Diaz to not be in AAA either.  Could be an exciting year in AAA for the first time in ages.

Sick strikeout rate so far by Permison.  His walks need to come down but at least the opp average is below .200.  He is certainly exceeding the usual expectations of a 42nd rounder.

Ahrens continues the hot streak, up to .250 now!

Gose hits his 2nd HR, but still only one walk.

I also didn't see D'Arnaud was back on the DL...not sure how I missed that one.

greenfrog - Saturday, August 07 2010 @ 11:19 PM EDT (#220093) #
Drabek is looking rock solid these days, and Stewart has coming on strong for quite a while as well.

2012 looks promising, but I'm wondering whether the team might even be able to contend next year. The rotation is potentially very deep (our best six starters a year from now may be Marcum/Romero/Cecil/Morrow/Drabek/Stewart). The lineup and defense also look good: Lewis/Escobar/Bautista/Wells/Lind/Hill/Snider/Arencibia/EE. There are a few potential problem areas (low team OBP, defense at 3B, 1B and in CF, possible regression from a couple of players, too many 1B/LF/DH types), but that looks like a really solid foundation for a ballclub.

I was in Auburn to catch the Doubleday game against Lowell. I'll give a more detailed recap tomorrow but Carlos Perez is awfully impressive. His at-bats and his approach was something else. He clearly outshone players like Jose Iglesias and Bryce Brentz.
Kelekin - Sunday, August 08 2010 @ 03:43 AM EDT (#220096) #
Based on how his career has started, -everyone- has outshone Bryce Brentz.

Acepinball, good to see a new member. I think if you follow baseball blogs, you will get enough links or analysis that you don't need BA.

I see no reason to burn an option on Drabek. The plan is 2014, 2015. There is no need to rush anyone.
