It was a perfect night on the farm and some Jonathans and and an Oliver did some major damage.

Las Vegas 15 at Sacremento 10

Las Vegas was down by 6 after the fourth inning and won by 5. That'll happen when you score multiple runs in 4 of the last 5 innings, including a 4 and 5 spot. The offense was remarkably balanced, as every starter but one had a hit and seven of the nine players reached base safely at least once, led by Jonathan Diaz who went 4/6 with a homer and double, driving in 2. The 51s ended up tallying 13 hits and 11 walks in total. Jarret Hoffpauir went 1/3 with 3 walks, Chris Lubanski singled and walked twice, Brad Emaus singled, doubled and walked, and Danny Perales hit a home run and drove in 4. Robert Ray took the hill and took the damage in this one, giving up 8 runs, 7 earned, in 3.1 innings. The rest of the pitchers did well, with Jeremy Roenicke picking up the win and Jamie Vermilyea the save in 1 and 2 scoreless innings, respectively.

Harrisburg 2 at New Hampshire 3

Harrisburg jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but the Cats came back with runs in the 2nd and 6th before pushing the winning run across on a Callix Crabbe double in the bottom of the 8th. Jonathan Jaspe, getting the start at first, reached base safely 4 times on 2 walks and 2 doubles, scoring twice. Adam Loewen and Chris Liuzza also walked twice, while Adeiny singled and Mastroianni tripled. Kyle Drabek started for New Hampshire but only went 3 innings, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits and a walk; he struck out 5. Danny Farquhar pitched 2 hitless innings for the save.

Dunedin 4 at Lakeland 1

The D-Jays were aided by no fewer than 4 Lakeland errors leading to 2 unearned runs. Limiting Lakeland to 3 hits also helped. Dunedin's offense came almost entirely from 3 players, as Ryan Schimpf, Yan Gomes and Kevin Ahrens each had 2 knocks, with Ahrens having the team's only extra base hit, a double. Schimpf also stole 2 bases, and Justin Jackson and Kenny Wilson swiped one apiece. Chuck Huggins pitched an effective 5 innings, giving up one run on one hit and one walk, with 4 strikeouts.

Western Michigan 2 at Lansing 6

Lansing struck for 2 in the first, second and fourth innings and that was more than enough to put the Whitecaps away. Egan Smith started and put pitched 6 innings, allowing 1 earned run on 8 hits. He walked none though and struck out 5, and got 8 of his 12 outs in play on the ground. Meanwhile Lansing got all the offense it needed from Oliver Dominguez, who singled, homered and walked twice in 4 plate appearances, scoring 3 times. Brad McElroy and KC Hobson also chipped in with 2 hits, while BRad Glenn doubled and Jake Marisnick tripled.

Auburn 3 at Lake College 2

Auburn had 4 hits, including 3 doubles, in the first inning to jump out to a 3--0 lead that they would not relinquish. Gustavo Pierre had 2 of the teams 6 hits, including a double, to pace the squad, while Lance Durham and Stephen McQuail both doubled, the later drawing a walk as well. Pierre, Markus Brisker and Matthew Nuzzo also stole bases. Sam Strickland got the start for Auburn, going 4 and allowing both runs. The pen shut things down, allowing only 1 run in 5 innings.

3 Stars!

3rd Star! Jonathan Diaz - 4/6, 2B, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI
2nd Star! Jonathan Jaspe - 2/2, 2 2B, 2 BB, 2 R
1st Star! Oliver Dominguez - 2/2. HR, 2 BB, 3 R, 2 RBI

Is anyone able to get Halladay and Hill off of the main banner? Please do it. I really love seeing other pictures with the post on the main page like the JPA one. It really brightens things up.

Has Vermilyea been in Indy ball the past two years?  I think we released him in 2008, but I can't see where he's been since.

He was in Italy and Japan:

As for the banner, given the new contract, it should be Romero. But I don't mind Halladay until someone (Romero) has proven himself for longer than 1-2 seasons. For that reason,  I'd also keep Hill. No one obvious to take his spot -- yet.

The banner has been a bit of a topic here for the past year. We have a few possible images and I'm certain we'll shift the images in the not too distant future. Trick is to find good shots of players that are not done by professionals who would charge us for it (the Box isn't exactly a high profit place).

the 51s draws 11 walks: Vegas and Reno are tied for the first place in both PCL and IL for on-base percentage? Is there a reason for that phenomenon, say, did hitting coaching emphasize on plate discipline this season?

Interesting point cybercavalier. I hadn't noticed the walking in Vegas. Jarrett Hoffpauir leads with 58, Brad Emaus has 47 in 83 games, while J. P. Arencibia, McCoy, and Lubanski are in the high 30's. These don't sound so high, but no one has played more than 107 games for that team.

Adjust to 150 games we'd have...
Jeroloman: 171 (only 7 games/8 BB in reality)
McCoy: 105
Lane: 95
Crabbe: 90
Jacobs: 85
Emaus: 85
Hoffpauir: 81
Reed: 77

All others on pace for under 62.

Interesting eh? Given it is the PCL one would think pitchers would avoid the walk like the plague.

I happened to be reviewing the rosters for the upcoming Ariz Fall Lg and it looks like the Javelinas mgr will have the same dilemma that the Cuban National Team had a few years ago...

...how do we juggle playing time @ SS for both Iglesias and Hechaverria?

Will be intriguing to see how that plays out as the season progresses.

I know it has been discussed, and I have weighed in. But upon further consideration;

Banner: Dave Steib and Pat Borders.

That would be a slice of pie for me.

BORDERS?

Eh.....no.

Fernandez, my friend. Tony f'n Fernandez.

(I love me some Alomar, to be sure, but in terms of franchise icons Fernandez has too much history)
If, of course, we're going with historical stuff.

I made a proposal a while back for a historical panorama that stretched from Stieb through Bell, Key, Fernandez, Alomar Carter, Olerud, Delgado, Halladay....so that it honored the whole sweep of the best players and events in Jays history
but whether you'd ever find eough public-domain pics...

Given Pedroia's season and foot injury plus Scutaro's contract I could see the Red $ox not being too bent out of shape about Iglesias playing some 2nd base .      This raises another scenario ... the $ox trading Pedroia and then moving Iglesias and parts for Aaron Hill and his just barely high fly to left homerun power which would play better at Fenway .       Ah , the imaginary fumes from Mylegacy's single malts are going to my head .

I still can't find anything on the Eastern League MVP which was supposed to be announced yesterday .   Probably inner debate on whether their top two awards can go to two Jay farmhands.  ( Can you tell that I've been watching 'Mad Men' reruns ?)    I think the smart money is still on Laird although Thames in my mind is more deserving  FWIW .
rtcaino - Friday, September 03 2010 @ 02:46 PM EDT (#221940) #

How about Borders with his '92 MVP award?

He was my fav player growing up; ergo, my irrational interest in him being on the banner. (I believe harnless irrationality was recently defended on this site.)

Moe - Friday, September 03 2010 @ 02:47 PM EDT (#221941) #
Why would the Sox trade Pedroia? I can't stand the guy but he had a solid season and is signed to a cheap contact for 4 more seasons (plus option). Looking at that contract and his stats, Boston really got a great deal even if he already peaked.

Thanks Johnny. Interesting point indeed. Individually, McCoy, Jeroloman, Lane, Emaus are good at plate disciplines. But to lead as a team in both PCL and IL in OBP is another achievement. But after skimming through the last 5 seasons and the last 5 seasons of those 5 seasons of 51s (2006-2010, 2001-2005), the .OBPs over three categories (51s's own OBP, league average and league leader in OBP) are

2010) 1st place: .360 (league average .348)
2009) 3rd place: 354 (league average .341, league leader .365)

2008) 1st place: .373 (league average .348)
2007) 3rd place: .355 (league average .348, league leader .367)
2006) 6th place: .352  (league average .341, league leader .364)
2005) 5th place: .354 (league average: .350, league leader .369)
2004) 8th place: .349 (league average: .350, league leader .376)
2003) 7th place: .342 (league average: .337, league leader .370)
2002) 2nd place: .355 (league average: .339, league leader .364)

2001) 7th place: .343 (league average: .339, league leader .355)

2000) 5th place: .369 (league average: .351, league leader .381)  Note: the Las Vegas baseball team was known as the Stars and affiliated with the Padres.

Over the seasons beginning from 2002, the league averages and league OBP leaders have always been hovering at the range of .340-ish and .360 to .370-ish respectively . Season 2000 is quite high in OBP leader, Vegas' own OBP and OBP leader. From Season 2000 to 2001, there were sharp drop in all three categories. (So did something happened back then in season 2000 to 2001?)

During the two seasons affiliated with the Jays, the OBP values are in accordance with the seasons of 2002-2008, i.e. league average is .340-ish, league OBP leaders are 360 to .370-ish. But there was a drop-off from 2008 to 2009 when the affiliation was switched from Dodgers to the Jays; and an increase from last season to this season. So when comparing last season non-pitching roster to this season's, I think the OVERALL quality of players are better this season; or maybe there are more reasons to all of the above observations.

Personally, I think it would be nice to dig deeper comparison of OBP and walks over the last seasons of 51s.

Just found this in the Game Notes for tonight's FCats game...

Eric Thames finished second in the MVP and Rookie of the Year balloting to Trenton’s Brandon Laird. Thames is currently tied with Chip Cannon for most home runs in a season (27) and smashed the franchise RBI mark (104).
